Entitled Customer Leaves A One-Star Yelp Review Over Omelet, Gets Exposed By The Chef That Cooked It

If you think Yelp reviews are the most accurate way to judge a restaurant you might want want to think again. From disgruntled employees to spiteful customers – sometimes there is more to a review than meets the eye. One such customer with too much time on their hands decided to take to Yelp to write about their terrible dining experience at a high-end restaurant even urging others not to go.

Well, sometimes people get so carried away with the anonymity of the internet that they forget that other people do pay attention – especially those that you are bad- mouthing. Watch how one review caught the attention of the chef – and how she responded served up a piping hot plate of the truth. (Facebook cover image: bryan…)

Someone wrote a scathing one-star review on Yelp: “Serves a goat cheese omelette (on the menu) with mozzarella cheese !!! That’s right and they tried to pass it off as got cheese!
The excuse … sometimes he gets confused !!! Are you kidding me? With those prices you don’t have that luxury !!! Pick another place to go. You’ll never know what will be put in your food !! “

Some time later, the chef responded: “So we do not often respond to negative reviews unless it is to apologize for a miscue in service or cuisine. So, as the chef, and one not hiding behind internet anonymity I will apologize for your receiving the incorrect cheese in your omelette. As the chef I also feel a responsibility to let you know that the cheese was not mozzarella, it would never be mozzarella unless we had made the mozzarella in house that is a cheese much like a burrata that can be easily made within a restaurant. It belongs to the pasta filata family of cheeses, it is not a cultured cheese, The cheese you had was a gruyere, and in its own right gruyere is a great cheese, a French bistro classic that does not even minutely resemble the texture of a true mozzarella nor does its flavor profile come close to the milky cleanness of a mozz as it is semi hard and cultured possessing a foot that a mozzarella does not possess.

I recall you coming into the restaurant, I recall stating that you were correct that the cheese in the omelet was supposed to be goats cheese and I recall offering to fix the problem I also recall that we comped your omelette even though you consumed the entire thing. I would never try and pass a cheese off as one instead of the other, the days leading up to your lunch we had placed a gruyere omelette on the menu, it was reflexive and honest mistake that could have been easily fixed but you chose not to allow us to do so. Instead, you wait several weeks to write a review that states information that is incorrect and inflammatory to a restaurant like ours that goes through great lengths to be the best that we can. If we failed in our endeavor with you I can accept that responsibility but I will not have our integrity attacked by a palate that cannot discern between mozzarella and gruyere… unless that was a mistake…. which is a luxury that those writing a serious critique of a serious restaurant do not have.”

I was thinking same thing on Amazon last night. I think 75% of people dont understand what & how to leave an honest review. I seen 1 star ratings because "i ordered wrong item so i didnt like it". Or the "i ordered the irem 4 sizes too small & couldn't fit my fat butt in it" . 😂

Meanwhile in an other universe: in a cosy bistro in Czech Republic instead of hummus I was recently served guacamole. Weird mistake, but as I hate to waste food I told the totally blushed waitress that it is fine. I love both. She tried to convince me to change the dish, so I asked what will happen with the warm toasts and guacamole on them. She said that they will trash it. So I ate it. And I was satisfied. I didn't want any compensation either as I know that sometimes this happens. If I would ever write a critique about the mentioned place, I'd highly recommend it. (Oh and they have brilliant goat cheese there two! :I )

And this is how you SHOULD react. They apologized and they offered to bring you what you ordert. They were obviously polite. Isn't that (and of course good food) the important thing about a restaurant? Mistakes happen all the time and everywhere. One can be an a*****e about it, or.. not.

Hahahaha! My grandfather would be turning in his grave if i mistook Gruyere for mozzarella. It´s thanks to him i'm a complete cheeselover. Don't bring me flowers or chocolate for birthdays, bring me a jar of stilton or some other smelly cheese. ;) And if you have finished the dish, don't complain (unless it's a matter of allergies).

People who leaves negative reviews weeks later are miserable people who like to complain. A legitimate complaints is reported promptly. Obviously the person had a crappy day & went thru a list of "those who wronged me in past year". 😂 Having worked in food industry for many years as both bartender & server, ive witnessed the most mild mannered people come unhinged when they enter a restaurant. I used to think people left their brains in their pocket before entering to order a meal. No one is perfect & i love the chefs response. Tactful & to the point.

The review was so unfair, not only is she tarnishing the reputation of the restaurant but she's depriving a lot of people from experiencing the food that the restaurant has to offer because some people choose to eat at certain restaurants based on reviews. How selfish!

I think if you don't send it back to be fixed then you've no grounds to complain. On the same hand if the order is wrong then the restaurant should replace it

These are minutes I will never get back. Now I'm going to stare into the space above my laptop as Once In A Lifetime by Talking Heads plays.

I love the snooty comment, ”gruyere isn’t French, it’s Swiss”. Nobody ever said it was French. Re-read the text, it says that gruyere is a “French bistro classic”. It is. It is used all the time in French bistros. They use Gouda, Edam and Swiss too. Cheeses from everywhere for everyone!

Kudos to the chef for a classy burn. BTW, I hate goat cheese and love Gruyere and would have loved that omelet, just like the jerk did who wrote the hit piece. The Swiss and French both have their versions; but, the Swiss is officially recognized as the original, authentic Gruyere.

But is it gruyere? because gruyere tends to be more yellowish than the omelette in the photo... Also if the cheff intends to give the reviewer a lesson about cheese he should at least know the fact that Gruyere is not french.

So i realize that it's not quite the same, but a while ago i was shopping for a dishwasher and reading reviews. I found one that was given a 1 star rating because it was damaged by the guys that delivered it. That seems fair.....

Personally, I prefer gruyere. It's my favorite and a very versatile cheese. The chef is probably very skilled at cooking. Not so much with grammar...

How diner could not distinguish the difference between those two cheeses is amazing. And if he/she didn't like the " substitute " should have asked for something else at that moment. I'm sure the chef would have accommodated the customer.

I've given s**t reviews before but by God it takes a lot of fuckups before I do. I dont care if they replaced it with velveeta, if it was good then imma eat it and pay for it happily. P.S I love cheese. Dgaf about a substitute. Unless it's Bleu. You take my Bleu and I kill ya.

From what I've seen of Yelp reviews I wouldn't rely on them to choose a restaurant. Besides, those critiques probably don't apply to Montreal restaurants anyway.

Gruyere cheese is Swiss in origin and was named after the town of Gruyères in Switzerland. The production of cheese in the region can be traced back to 1115

Sitting in a fine restaurant does not a gourmand make but this may be the exception. I'm a foodie and don't take it seriously. However I see this often; camera's out, pictures snapping, comments (loud) flying. These insufferable prigs are more pleased with themselves that they knew the restaurant existed before their friends rather than the food they crawled out so desperately to document. Their reference to quality lay squarely in how much a thing costs.

Well the customer didn't state anything wrong. So although the tone of the review is not that nice the cockyness of the owner isn't great either.

I've never been to a restaurant where they weren't willing to replace a dish that had a mistake - and that's from greasy spoon diners to white tablecloth Michelin starred restaurants. No one wants an unhappy customer.

What a horrendous "mistake" the chef made. Knowing the restaurant personally, my guess was this was intentional.
