The gun laws in the US have become a little bit of a joke all around the world, because of how they actually do the opposite of what laws are there for - to ensure everyone’s safety. But we all realize that it is not actually funny when people are losing their lives, especially knowing how many of those deaths could have been prevented.

There are people who take every chance they can to speak up about the gun policies in the US, but their voices are often lost in the flow of information and other events happening in the world and only can be heard clearly when a tragedy shakes society.

The loud discussions about gun laws unfolding right now are unfortunately a result of a mass shooting that took place on May 24 in Uvalde, Texas at an elementary school with 19 kids and 2 teachers killed. Celebrities and famous politicians are using their platforms to spread awareness of this problem in the US and are offering solutions to end it.

It is tragic, heartbreaking, and flat-out disgusting when guns are the leading cause of death for youth and adolescents in the United States. I feel like this country has grown so numb to the endless cycle of shooting that plague the newspapers and news sites. Twenty-seven, I repeat twenty-seven school shooting have happened in the U.S. this year. And there have already been 213 mass shootings since the 2022. Shouldn't that terrify people and send up massive warning bells? This country needs to taken action because sadly thoughts and prayers are not going to bring innocent lives back.

My first thought was that you were surely wrong about it being the #1 cause of death for youth and adolescents in the US, surely motor vehicle crashes and drowning would be higher. Then I looked it up. You. Are. Right. :(

It truly astounds me that you can have practically any kind of gun you like, but if you are a woman, you don't have the right to make decisions about your own body. USA its time to take a good, long, hard look at yourselves and work out your priorities.

The gun laws we have are so outdated. In New Zeland there was a school shooting, they then changed their laws. The amount of shootings went down since then. The US want even change there laws after hundreds of shootings!

The US is the ONLY country in the world that has such a horrible gun problem. WHY? Because of our lack of gun control would be my guess. Cancun Cruz says it's a mental illness problem! HA! Does he really believe that the US is the only country in the world that has people with mental illness? What a complete a*s! Countries that have sane people governing DO NOT have high school drop-outs wielding military style rifles and killing babies.

I read that 4 planned mass school shootings have been stopped by police in 4 different regions of Texas in the 24 hours after the massacre in Uvalde. Yet nothing changes...

View more comments

The shooting took place at Robb Elementary school in the small city of Uvalde in Texas, which is located about 80 miles west of San Antonio. As of now, 21 deaths were confirmed.

The police have already found out who the shooter was and it was actually a local high school student, Salvador Ramos. He had just turned 18 and for his birthday, he legally bought two assault rifles and scores of ammo. Three days before the shooting, he posted a photo of his purchase in his Instagram stories.

They don't want to p**s off their campaign contributors, like the NRA. Our government is happy to have innocent children gunned down, as long as they get to hang on to their power and position.

Crusty old senators in the U.S. will try to ban books, abortion rights for women, and gay rights, yet they will scream and cry when people who have lost loved ones to gun violence demand that we put gun laws into place and ban all assault weapons. The hypocrisy is astounding.

Because our government refuses to help people with mental illness. I have a friend with a child with a mental illness that may end up a mass shooter. She has paid tens of thousands on medication and psychiatrists and therapists, with no help from anyone. He is still mentally ill. She wants to institutionalize him but can't afford it and the government won't help. Yet people will blame guns if he becomes a mass murderer, not their own failure to help the mentally ill.

On Tuesday, Salvador Ramos shot his grandmother, who was taken to the hospital and was in serious condition. Then the shooter crashed his car into a ditch near the school and went into the building through the back door.

He chose a classroom and barricaded himself in one of them that had an adjoining classroom as well. The high schooler started what he came there for and just started shooting at everyone. All of those 19 children and 2 teachers that were killed were in that classroom the shooter was in and the adjoining one. When the police arrived, they managed to open the door and liquidate the shooter.

Actually, no. Not without the support of the Senate and Congress. Our political system is so divided that we can't even get agreement on an infrastructure bill, when our infrastructure is crumbling to the point of threatening national security. There's an "us against them" mentality that's allowing the rich to get richer, the middle class to disappear and the poor to be homeless without living wages. Nothing will change until we get rid of the filibuster, gerrymandering and lobbyists. They've got us fighting amongst ourselves, which prevents us from uniting for real change that benefits the average citizen.

Salvador Ramos had no problems accessing the guns, and quite powerful ones too. He just went to a federally authorized dealer in the Uvalde area and legally paid for them as if he was buying candy.

The right to have a gun is mentioned in the infamous Second Amendment to the United States Constitution which states "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

It was enough before I was born when this song was written. You don't need to tell me why - money is why. The NRA having the Republican party in it's grotty little pocket is why. The fetishisation of guns to almost religious levels is why. The US needs to get it's f-ing act together - the only country with this level of a problem and the complete unwillingness to solve it.

Malala Yousafzai was shot by fundamentalists for trying to get an education. Is this what education in the US has come to? People get shot going about their business. Shopping for food, going to school, and attending entertainment venues should not be high-risk activities. Years back, when I visited the US, I found myself thinking, "If I go to a movie, I'll have to look at exits and entrances and rehearse escaping an armed intrusion." I might worry about crowd control in Canada, but not about guns.

Meanwhile in other countries like Finland we don't even have to drive them to school because it's safe for them to walk or take a bike and go independently. Also they can play and run outside by themselves freely after they turn 7 or 8. This is a problem the US created by allowing everyone to carry a gun. Ridiculous. Fix it!

They need one staunch Republican with the balls to give up their guns publicly and lead a gun amnesty. Otherwise it's just more whinging and bitching and deferring blame. The change must come from within their own camp.

As much as I like Obama's way with words, what's need it anger, pure, unadulterated anger; with Republicans, with the NRA, the police, pro-gun nutjobs, with the lobbying system in the U.S. and with the hypocrisy of those who are Pro-life while supporting a free for all on gun ownership.

And Americans like to take advantage of this right. That is why there are 120 guns per 100 Americans, and about 44 percent of US adults have a gun in their house. Gun production jumped 60 percent in the period between January 2020 and January 2021. Also, the FBI announced that in March 2021, they conducted the most background checks concerning guns.

Many people see owning a gun as a manifestation of the freedom their country provides them, however, time and time again it has proven itself to be very harmful.

And that is what is so absolutely horrifying and frustrating about the United States. There have been 213 mass shootings in the United States in 2022 alone and NOTHING has been done by the government to change this. We mourn and offer thoughts and prayers, yet nothing changes. I feel like so many people in the U.S. have become numb to these atrocities. It's almost like we expect them to become a weekly occurrence.

Republicans want us to break. They want us to snap and come at them so they can pretend they're victims. We're going to have to take them up on it. It might be time for some of these lawmakers to experience the effects of their gun-worship directly. It's time for NRA nutjobs to be forced to scrub the blood from elementary school walls, to be the ones to identify the dead chunks of meat that used to be kindergarteners. F**k your guns.

Let's be more clear about it. At 18 you can go die in a foreign country fighting for your countries freedoms. We take kids directly out of high school, arm them and send them to kill people they've never met and whose country they probably couldn't find on a map if prompted. They are growing up in poor neighborhoods where drug dealers and gangs are killing each other everyday, and you think that guns are the issue? How about mental health. Give these people the ability to earn a living wage, stop giving breaks to companies that lie about how much they will have to raise prices to pay people a decent living wage. Start funding the police better so they can take a proactive approach to policing instead of constantly having to mop up crime scenes. Try to create programs that help people instead of constantly cutting budgets so that a pharmaceutical company or bank can dump 6-7 figure bonuses on people that don't deserve it. Why does it always have to be so complicated?

I agree with you, but guns are a large part of the issue, and saying they aren't is naive and f*****g stupid. "Fund the police better"? They have a massive amount of funding and they use it to f*****g militarize themselves. Perhaps if they allocated funds to things that weren't military weapons they could be if some use. Also, gang violence is worse and more when you can walk into a gun store and buy a f*****g M4. You are an idiot, but I agree with you about the war s**t and mental health. The second amendment was a mistake.

The gun issue in the US is long-standing. In the years between 1970 and 2020, there have been 2,053 school shootings, and this year alone, 288 of them have been recorded. The US has the most school shootings in the world and they are in the lead with a big difference from the country with the second highest number of shootings, which is Mexico, with 8 so far this year.

What is even more concerning is that this wasn’t the first big school shooting with many fatal victims. In fact, the one in Uvalde is the second biggest elementary school shooting in the US, in the past 10 years, that is.

In 2012, 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot and killed 26 people when he came to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The incident raised the question of gun control then, but in all those years, nothing has changed and it was just a matter of time until a new tragedy occurred.

Fire a legislator who is not working for YOUR interests, and elect their competition. Write letters! Let your legislators know what's important to you. Cops actually engaged the shooter BEFORE he entered the school. Didn't stop him from barricading himself in the classroom and shooting everyone. Edit: and now there is an investigation into if the other cops who showed up soon after waited too damn long to breach the school. Cops with guns, potentially standing around.

We need lawmakers not loving that NRA money more than they love children. We need to vote out every one of them. If you're pissed, that's OK, but vote anyway. Nothing has changed in decades and there is a reason for it. Make the dark money lose its grip on politicians by voting them out.

He spoke about all the moments of silence that are held in remembrance of the victims. I say, no more moments of silence. Not one more moment. We need to make unimaginable noise. Keep making unimaginable noise. The only way we stop doing that is when politicians grow some b**** and say no to the gun lobby and those who freak out about 2nd ammendment rights. This is not about maintaining their power. It's about doing the right thing.

90% of Americans want background checks, waiting times and the ban of assault rifles. Obviously, the politicians (repubs) who get a great deal of money from the NRA, in the millions, crave the additions in their bank accounts a lot more than they worry about the safety of children.

Mass school shootings happen in other countries in the world as well, but the frequency that it happens in the US is unmatched. So there is clearly something that the rest of the world is doing right that is not done in one of the most developed countries in the world.

So the politicians in the Senate are once again raising the question of gun control laws, using this shooting as evidence that the current ones are not working. Hopefully, the pressure from not only society but famous people who have influence will help to move towards the right direction.

Also pay attention to teachers. We are leaving education in DROVES because we are broken by this, broken by Conservatives' idiocy about what we teach and how we teach it. We will be replaced by gun-toting, corporate-sponsored "state" teachers who will tow the Republican party line AND will be armed to the teeth. If nothing changes NOW, that is what our country will look like in just a few years.

And this is why people don't want the government to be completely in charge of everything. Because politicians get in the way. No one realizes that dealing with society is like working a computer program. There needs to be updates to improve it, there needs to be fixes when something is broken and you need to get rid of the coding that just doesn't serve a purpose anymore. This government was formed on the basis of what was needed at the time. Well times have changed and the government does too. Their biggest problem is there are too many voices and no one is listening. There has got to be a way to simplify this.

I survived a mass shooting. I was able to run and hide. This was in 1980. The rest of my life has been affected by it. I've never married, never had children. I have terrible PTSD, I'm a recovering alcoholic (12 years sober), and feel like my life has been for nothing. I hope that each child survivor, their parents and the school teachers have therapy available for them. Even if they think they don't need it, I hope they take it. I wasn't afforded that privilege and I regret every day I didn't insist on it.

Lets hear your plan, Random Guy...what should he do? Issue Executive orders? Obama tried that, Trump simply overturned them. CONGRESS passes laws. As long as they are taking money hand over fist from gun manufacturers, NRA, and lobbyists...it will not change. The President, in this situation, is a figurehead. He can issue EO's until he is blue in the face...but if they will simply be overturned by the next Conservative Administration...what freaking good will it do? Lets talk to who can actually change something...CONGRESS and those who vote them into office! People want to feel "enlightened" and "fair" when they do the "Both sides are the same" nonsense argument...they are NOT. ONE side is for controlling this mess. ONE side is trying to hold all accountable and regulate this wild west industry. ONE side does everything in their power to stop it...and to reverse what has been able to be accomplished. This is hardly about Joe Biden.

Quite possibly sooner. Any mass shooting is followed by a few others where people who had been considered about it get the last little push from seeing it. There's a very good podcast called Stop the Killing where one of the presenters is an ex FBI mass shooting specialist.

We can't prevent every death even by gun but they have the possibility to lower the risk so much. I mean, you can still die in a car crash, but driver licence, using your signal when you turn, respecting speed limite and safety distance, seatbelt, being sober and so on, lower the risk. There are laws to lower the risk to get killed in a car crash, but not to lower the one of been shot. (even though we're talking about guns that, contrary to cars, are meant to kill). Apart from the money and power the people in charge get from not doing anyrhing, what I am missing?

So, unfortunately, is the anger and heartbreak from those of us outside the US. There is literally nothing we can do, because we can't get involved in their politics. So we watch helplessly as people die, and feel the infuriating impotence of knowing it can be changed because we've done it (UK, Australia, NZ...), except we weren't even close to starting from the same point, and somehow that makes it even worse.

What's even worse is she missed out the one at the church in between last week's supermarket shooting and this week's school shooting. It didn't have as high a body count but only because the congregations rushed the guy and the preacher hit him over the head with a chair. One of the people rushing him died but it gave the others the chance to take him down. Otherwise there would have been a double figure death toll there too.

It cost more and is more difficult to see a doctor in your country than it is to buy a gun! Never mind police "going in,to stop a guy shooting up a school",how about school shootings don't happen?I live in Australia. Our last mass shooting was in 1996.We still talk about it because we are still shocked it could happen. It was not a school shooting, because WE DON'T HAVE THOSE!! As a result of it though ,we changed our gun laws, among other things ,we made it against the law to own an automatic or semi automatic gun....How 'bout America starts there?

I was thinking the same about the last mass shooting at a school in Australia, and then I remembered - we don't have a ridiculous belief that everyone should be armed at all times. A woman can't make decisions about her own reproductive health, but everyone else has the right to bear arms - just in case. Seriously USA, grow up & if you want to value & protect life, start by removing guns from the population.

Removing guns isn’t the answer in our culture. They will then just be acquired illegally. I don’t know what the answer is, but “just ban guns!!!!” isn’t it.

In times like this, when people OF POWER, people who ARE ROLE MODELS TO THE WORLD, can’t do s**t, it’s up to us to help each other. They can’t get it. And they never will. HELP EACH OTHER. Even if no-one else will

Enough is enough. We need political people that don't get over the mass murder of children in a week. We need stricter gun laws. We need safer schools. We won't take any more of your "Thoughts and Prayers" You know what we want? We want people who take the time to make schools safer. Instead people are making money selling guns. We need people to make sure you can't just walk in to a school, armed. We need change.

If the Kartrashians truly cared, why don't they use their money for good? The only reason nothing is being done is because corporations own politicians. Quit wasting money on designer clothes and lobby for change.

Invest in the future: buy your own (Republican) politician! /s Yes, it would be nice if the Ks bailed out America, but frankly: that's not their job, nor should it be. A political system (a "democracy", no less!) that is so easily and openly bought and sold is not worth bailing out, because by now it's hurting more people than it helps. The US need a new system where voters can actually and directly influence legislation

Thank you! I hate the kardashians with every piece of my soul, but I respect what this woman is saying. It’s enough. I was enough before, and it is enough now.

I have an idea, people like you who vote these demons in to protect your undeserved wealth can start taking some responsibility in how you vote

No. This country needs gun control. All your prayers are worthless, they're empty and meaningless to these parents who've just lost their entire world! Action is needed. Stop looking up for help and start helping yourself by changing these insane laws.

Keep your religion out of it. The biggest gun nuts in this country are also religious.

Which frankly doesn't make any sense. It's hard to imagine an earnest scholar of scripture, the scripture of any major world religion - pick one, justifying this stance based on their religious beliefs.
