My first thought was that you were surely wrong about it being the #1 cause of death for youth and adolescents in the US, surely motor vehicle crashes and drowning would be higher. Then I looked it up. You. Are. Right. :(

Sadly, the answer for most Americans is to.... get more guns.... "If the school had armed guards this wouldn't have happened". Next thing you know all the kids should be packing guns with them. They don't seem to care about the WHY behind someone doing this.

You are so right @Loki's LBK. And what I'm truly missing is the comparison to other so called 'first world countries'. But I sadly assume that the US media and even more their politicians are not intrested in telling their people that they are closer to Mexico or Columbia (please, people of those countries I don't want to offend you and please tell me if I'm wrong) than other so called 'first world nations' like the whole of the EU and UK. Or Australia or New Zealand. And the reason? None of theses countries gave such lax wapeon laws! (Maybe the Swiss do, but apparently they are much more considerate people with a functioning health and social system).

I'm more afraid of impaired drivers (drunk, buzzed, texting) than I will ever be of guns. That kind of carnage is apparently isn't newsworthy. Yes, the shootings are horrific, so are dead teenagers in car wrecks, children dying of cancer, etc

I agree 100%. You left out a very important part. And that is the Senate is full of old men who are in the pocket of the National Rifle Association. Repubs value money above everything. They mouth how they have the lost ones in their thoughts and prayers but will do NOTHING to get the gun situation in this country under control. I'm hoping for the day when some of their children and grandchildren are victims and then we will see how quick they change their tune.

The US is the ONLY country in the world that has such a horrible gun problem. WHY? Because of our lack of gun control would be my guess. Cancun Cruz says it's a mental illness problem! HA! Does he really believe that the US is the only country in the world that has people with mental illness? What a complete a*s! Countries that have sane people governing DO NOT have high school drop-outs wielding military style rifles and killing babies.

Just countering the lies from some commenters here: 2020 US data (from statists.com, the top Google hit searching “ us knife vs gun deaths”) Knife or cutting instrument deaths = 1,739 Handgun, firearms type not stated, rifles, shotguns, and other guns = 13,663 That’s almost 8 times as many MURDER victims and doesn’t even count suicides and accidental shootings. The guns are the problem and it is complete and total BS to claim that if they weren’t easy to get, people would just be knifing up thousands of people including school children.

Because our government refuses to help people with mental illness. I have a friend with a child with a mental illness that may end up a mass shooter. She has paid tens of thousands on medication and psychiatrists and therapists, with no help from anyone. He is still mentally ill. She wants to institutionalize him but can't afford it and the government won't help. Yet people will blame guns if he becomes a mass murderer, not their own failure to help the mentally ill. How about the government and those obsessing about guns allowing freedom for the dangerous mentally ill and not caring or helping parents who want and need it to prevent the problem in the first place?

The NRA has more money to contribute to politicians than ten year olds do. That's the entire reason.

so we can use our guns to PROTECT our children? I'm telling you, taking away guns isn't the answer. Take a look at Japan. They don't allow guns, and yet there was a mass stabbing where nineteen people died. We need better security, NOT more restrictions.

Because we have three things working against us...Lack of mental health care because the government and insurance companies don't want to pay for it....lack of balls on the politicians that are afraid taking someone's rights away to own an AK-47 will get them booted out of office...and the 2nd Amendment Cult that think that taking away access to AK-47's and other similar type guns means all of their freedoms will be taken away...usually the same idiots that thought wearing a mask during Covid was a worldwide conspiracy to take away people's rights.

Because the USA abandoned mental health care when I was young and "liberated" the mentally ill demanding the government shut down mental institutions. They gladly did saving tons of money. Now people like my friend with a mentally ill son who could easily become a mass murderer can not get any help or assistance with the tens of thousands she pays psychiatrists, therapists, and for meds. He needs institutionalizing but now that the citizens of the US have abandoned the mentally ill, only the rich can afford institutionalization. Instead the USA has chosen to allow "freedom" to the dangerously mentally ill who commit mass murder and then blame the guns not the person pulling the trigger. Nor do they blame themselves for abandoning the mentally ill.

If only the government was the problem it would be a lot simpler. The issue is a not insignificant portion of the population is so anti gun control they threaten the sane people trying to bring about change.

While fully admitting that the US federal gov't needs some re-thinking ---- electoral college, Constitution ----- the real problem is that people are being sold FEAR. And fear has sold so well that 1/3 of Americans own more guns than the other 2/3 combined. So who should we fear? Yeah, the gun nuts. Do we? Well, I sure as hell do. But until federal legislation overrides state legislation on this issue, you can buy a gun in West Virginia ane use it to commit mass murder in Virginia, b/c hey, it was legal in WV...

I'm 42, and my streaming playlist has just played a few notes of a Boomtown Rats song that's older than me, and you know the one I mean. It was enough before I was born when this song was written. You don't need to tell me why - money is why. The NRA having the Republican party in it's grotty little pocket is why. The fetishisation of guns to almost religious levels is why. The US needs to get it's f-ing act together - the only country with this level of a problem and the complete unwillingness to solve it.
