Australia is currently being ravaged by bushfires that spread across the country as the regular bushfire season took an unexpected and severe turn. Unfortunately, so far an estimated 8.4 million hectares (21 million acres; 84,000 square kilometres; 32,000 square miles) were lost to flames, alongside 2,500 buildings (including over 1,900 houses). The fires took lives of 25 people (as of 5 January 2020) and there are more gruesome losses of life as it is feared that an estimated billion animals were killed or will die due to starvation and loss of habitat caused by the flames.
Many people responded to Australia's dire situation, offering everything from thoughts and prayers to support and donations. Amongst millions of others, celebrities also chimed in and encouraged others to help and donate. While celebs like Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton urged their millions of followers to donate, others decided to lead by example as they put out real numbers and how they donated to encourage others to follow their suit. If you spotted a favorite celebrity making a donation as well, comment and let us know about their good deeds!

exactly!!!!!!! The MAJORITY of the firefighters, especially in rural / small town areas, are VOLUNTEERS, who take unpaid time off of work, in order to save the homes / farms of *other* people (often, while they themselves are losing their own homes to fire). Seriously, people need to stop crapping on those who are *doing* something to help, because it doesn't fulfil their idea of what 'help' should be. She has raised almost $50,000,000, and people are bitching about it? FFS.

and every single dollar counts. Even our $10. It's $1,000,000 that Aussies didn't have before Elton gave it. It would take 100,000 of "us" donating $10 each, to get to that amount. Gratitude for all help, I find, is far more productive, whether it's $10, $1, or $1,000,000.

Have you considered that they publicly pledge one amount to get others to give, but actually give a lot more? BTW, how much have you given? How much time have you volunteered? How have you helped, other than trying to shame others for their "cheap" donations?

What’s wrong here. I’ll tell ya. The point that this dude didn’t donate much but raised money got upvoted here. Celeste Barber who also raised money didn’t donate much money, who’s at the top of the list, when someone pointed out that she raised money and didn’t necessarily donate all of it got downvoted. So what’s the difference here? It’s great that they’re both raising money for Australia, but they’re not exactly donating much, so being on this list might not work? I don’t know but it kinda seems like we’re picking favorites. Not that it matters. Donate 5c and you've already done more than the government here. I am very grateful to all the people donating, particularly directly to the firefighters, but it bothers me so much that all our support comes from celebrities and good samaritans instead of the leaders we pay billions to for exactly this purpose.

I just hope they don't give a cent to the Red Cross. Only a small % will end up actually in aid, the rest will go towards the CEOs exorbitant salary, staff wages, marketing campaigns and general admin costs. They were heavily criticised after the Box Day Tsunami (Dec 2004) that so little of the Australian donations made it to the people on the ground in Indonesia. Sad but true, just Google it along with the 'worst charities'.

But it will help the people who fought the fires, the people who worked to rescue those in trouble (everyone's in trouble, though), supplying people with food, water and hygene, and, when hopefully it's over, it may help people to rebuild and recover.

Id like to see some of our own millionaires help out somewhat. Reinhardt, The Packers just to name a few. The little aussie battlers seem to be more willing to do their bit, with not much in their purse to begin with, but still want to help. Meanwhile, I wonder how many hands will be in the donation coffers, before funds raised gets on the ground?!
