Bored Panda was very curious to learn about the gap between our private and public personas, so we reached out to Glenn Geher, Ph.D. He is a professor of psychology at the State University of New York at New Paltz and a published author, and kindly answered our questions.

We asked Dr. Geher about why human beings tend to adjust their behavior around different groups of people and in various environments. He walked us through this.

"People definitely evolved to adjust behavior based on the nature of situations that they run into. Behavior at a wedding is usually joyful, while behavior at a funeral is typically solemn. People who are good at 'reading the room' and adjusting their behaviors based on the demands of particular situations tend to navigate the waters of the social world better than those who are low on this skill," he explained to Bored Panda.

I've read similar before but I still feel it is a blemish on his character that he is willing to treat people like that to promote his public persona and make bank off of it. And then nobodies try to mimic what they saw the famous rich person do. With villains in movies, everybody knows all of the parts are actors playing a role. Incredibly kind, funny and down to earth person. Complete gem of a human.

These days, parasocial relationships form between fans and celebrities, bloggers, influencers, sports teams, gamers, and TV stars. In the past, it was TV personalities who were most often the ‘targets’ of these one-sided relationships. But these stars’ interactions with their fans were far more limited and formal back then. Fast-forward to the current date and you have an incredible array of tools to interact with your followers all over the world: from social media and live streams to blog posts and in-person meetups.

Given all of this context, it’s not unusual to think that you ‘know’ a celebrity you follow as though they were a personal friend of yours. However, this is a misperception. Without sounding overly judgmental, you only get to know what they want you to know. It’s their public ‘face,’ similar to what you ‘put on’ when you go to work, meet with clients, attend fancy events, etc.

Getting to know a celebrity in person or watching some candid, in-depth, behind-the-scenes interviews can really change your relationship with them. Some fans might feel like they’ve finally ‘met’ the real, authentic star. Others might feel ‘betrayed’ that the person they’ve grown to admire for so long is only a small fragment of their personality.

My former venue was where he filmed his last netflix special. As wild and raunchy as his character and comedy his, once he was in business mode, he couldn't have been more professional, open-minded, and kind. It was truly incredible to see how well he can snap in and out of character.

One very memorable moment was when we had our initial meeting deciding if it would be at our venue or not, during sound checking he was discussing run of show, etc, someone hands him a mic to sound check and he goes from discussing business logistics with me to looking into my soul and says "Who here likes bukkake" and i obviously laughed and was caught off guard. He called me bukakke for the rest of the week.

During down time between audiences and filming I got to be around him a lot and he could not have been more friendly, and enjoyable.

10/10 would hang with him again any time.

Wait a minute. I had the incredible opportunity to meet Mr Nye while working at an airport. My coworker tried to fan-shame me when she yelled out at him...made me seem like a stan. Yes, he got defensive. I've said this before, but the two times I saw her on Graham Norton she was just the sweetest. He was pulling something out, and she leaned off the couch and said, "Should we help you?" with her arms out. In another interview this 80+ British actress was talking about how she'd lost weight and her dress didn't fit. Gaga grabs a pin and starts pinning the dress on better so she'll look great. He comes to the marina in a golf cart, plays cards with the people in the seasonal trailer park, and even celebrated my bestie's next-door neighbours 50th anniversary with them.

I've only seen Hailey a couple of times, and she was super quiet, walking a dog, buying a coffee at this little bakery shop near the quarry.

I have one, when I first moved to the UK in the late 90s, I used to work in an office in Belgrave (posh London location) and lots of times crossed paths with a very tall, extremely well dressed older gentleman while on my lunch time walk, and he always greeted me first "hello darling!" in a very deep voice and had a 5-10 min chat. YEARS later I found out it was Tom Baker (Doctor Who). Maybe he found it amusing I had no idea who he was!

In the 90s I was in Los Angeles with a friend and he's a starfucker. This guy thinks celebrities owe it to fans to talk and give autographs. I do not. We were at the famer's market and we noticed Jason Alexander was eating lunch with whom I assume were his sons. They were young. I turned to my friend and said, "Don't. He's having lunch with his kids. Just leave him the f**k alone." Did he? Nope. He marched right up to the table like a complete a-hole. It's not that he was a Seinfeld fan (I was not) or that he was a fan of Jason Alexander, he was just a starfucker. He walks up to his table and just bombards him. And it was embarrassing because he basically just said, "You're famous, can I have your autograph?" Jason was clearly annoyed and his kids didn't seem happy about it. So I walked up to the table, grabbed my friend's arm and yanked him away and said, "I don't care if he's the f*****g President, let the man enjoy his f*****g lunch and stop being so f*****g annoying!"

My friend was not happy with me and he stormed off like a child. I turned back to Jason and apologized on his behalf. Jason said, "I'm used to it, but you, don't apologize for his actions or anyone else's. I appreciate you putting him in his place though. Thank you." Then he introduced himself to me and he had bought a bag of apples and he gave me an apple. People have to remember that just because they're famous, they don't owe us anything and just to leave them the f**k alone if you see them with their families.

Bryan Cranston. I know he doesn't have a bad reputation but the way he can turn his acting skills on and off was a delight to watch. I was hanging out on set when he did the scene where he ransacked Jesse's house. He was ripping through things with a fierce rage so bad he made the set shake. Then when the shot was done jumped up and smiled, "How was that?" Immediately delightful and friendly and cheerful. The director had to tell him he was shaking the set and ge had to do it again and he laughed and was like, "Damn, I thought I nailed it!" Then back into cheerful friendly guy until they could reset everything and have him do it again. Another fun story is when he shot the scene where he shaved his head because of his character having cancer. He went around the set that day convincing random crew members to let him shave their head. All done in fun! At lunch that day a bunch of people showed up with shaved heads 😆 His friendship with Aaron Paul was 100% real. They are both lovely!

I have met Trisha Yearwood and her mother. My sister used to work for UNI they distributed music for performers on the MCA label. Iwas about 6 months pregnant with my daughter and my sister invited me to the warehouse to meet Trisha she was intown to do a concert the same day one of her new albums released. I got to opportunity to meet her and have a nice chat with her and her mother. They are the sweetest most humble people I have ever met.
