After Killing Famous Lion, Internet Outrage Forces The Killer To Close His Dental Office

Cecil the lion was one of the most popular attractions at Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park – until he was killed by Walter Palmer, a dentist from the U.S. who paid $55,000 for the “pleasure” to kill the 13-year-old wildlife celebrity. The backlash from animal lovers around the world has been so strong that the dentist’s website has shut down and his office is shuttered.

Palmer, a trophied wild animal hunter, paid a guide to lure the wild cat out of the park at night so he could be poached. He shot and wounded Cecil with a bow, but was only able to kill the big cat 40 hours later. Cecil was beheaded and skinned – his carcass remained unused.

Not only did his lion hunt kill a local celebrity at the park, but, according to the Zimbabwean Tourism Authority, the hunt was illegal, and a criminal investigation is currently underway. African cat’s death will affect more than just him and his fans. Now that Cecil is gone, other male lions will probably kill off the 24 cubs that he had left with his pride to ensure that their own bloodlines live on instead.

He could see the lion well enough to shoot him with an arrow, but he couldn't see that the lion had a collar??? Moreover, even if it was "legal," what kind of sick, cruel excuse for oxygen do you you have to be to use a bow and arrow to kill this animal and force him to endure 44 hours of excruciating pain? Can we raise money for the 24 cubs Cecil left behind? I hate to see his pride and joy be killed by another lion. I understand it is the way the animal kingdom works, but I think this would be the right thing to do in memory of Cecil. Make the dentist pay for the misplacement of the cubs.

It's nature. The only way these cubs will be saved is if humans intervene, then they'll live in a zoo or wildlife rescue somewhere. Either way, they won't be able to live their life as they should. Unfortunately most of the male cubs would die whether or not Cecil was still alive. They would end up competing with each other to become next in line. That's just the way they are.

No one is going to hunt this guy down; and putting him in jail won't solve much. However a fine of 10x the money he paid to kill a lion is reasonable. So $550,000 for the Cecil. And $550,000 for each cub that dies as a result of his actions. If all cubs are killed, that's 25 x $550,000 = $13,750,000.00 to be used in the prevention of poaching and the ending of making big game species a hunted animal. And no bankruptcy option, so if he doesn't have, he loses all he has and works the rest off. Either as a dentist or risking his neck to stop other poachers like himself. Kind of works to solve the problem and, unlike jail, acts a deterrent to rich, bored jackasses who think this kind of c**p is fun. Just saying.

The only time i think hunting is good is when it is a part of your life. Just like tribe people do and in the past native americans. When you need to hunt to feed others and yourself, to use as much of the animal as possible as to say you respect what the animal offers you for its life. Not hunting a animal for sports where you just kill an animal who has as much right to be on this planet as we do. If they want to do it for sports we should let those people hunt with what nature gives them.... Bare hands or maybe a stone knife. Let's see how long they last against a lion. The killing of Cecil, the black maned lion of Zimbabwe, as celebrity, obviously saddened me. But ithis shouldn't only be about Cecil. Hundreds of other (big) game animals are being killed in the same fashion. Some well to do "hunter" goes to Africa, near a reserve, where these animals are not as weary, used to harmlessly cross humans in parcs. Hunt of the chosen animal (there is a list to pick from) is arranged for big money in a specific are on a specific date (makes you wonder about the agenda of the animal, doesn't it???!!!) with the assistance of a professional hunter and some locals so no harm will come to the paying guest. "Sports" hunting must be forbidden. Unfortunately BIG money and many corrupt sticky fingers are involved. Against personal gain, particularly in developing countries, animal protection doesn't stand a chance.

This was not "hunting". Hunting is when you go out alone, and find your prey, and then kill it, because you need FOOD. Hunting is not paying someone to lure the animal out into the open, blinding it with spotlights and then shooting it with an arrow, which only wounds it, and then following it to "finish" it off.

It takes a special kind of sicko to admit that this is an activity he "loves". I can't understand how ANYONE can "love" to watch the life drain out of a living creature. Hunting for food, as a necessity, is one thing (personally, I still couldn't do it, I don't have it in me), but to "love" killing something simply for the sake of killing it--as a TROPHY--while discarding the remains as nothing more than trash, is despicable! And it deeply saddens me! This weak excuse for a human being wounds the poor creature, hunts it down for forty hours, than finishes the job--without giving it a second thought. And the ONLY reason why he's apologizing is because he didn't realize it was a "celebrity"!?! Otherwise... what? He'd be proud of himself for catching and killing a lion? All I know is, shame on him! He deserves every bit of unpleasantness that has been heading his way!

He lives here in my city. HIs office is closed for now but will certainly reopen once things cool down which they certainly will because people forget and move onto other things to be outraged about. I am appalled and horrified that he did this but if we are all truly angry enough, then let's do something to make his death not in vain. Support legislation that makes it a criminal act to import exotic and protected animal parts into this country and make it illegal to shoot protected animals here. We are the second largest purchaser of illegal animal parts int he world and we are the number one country for big game hunting. Let's do something about this folks because if we don't there will be another Cecil, as well as countless other animals, killed in the name of sport and to quell our desire for exotic things.

Wounded Cecil would run away from his pride to protect them and lure the killers away. This freak Palmer knew exactly what he was doing. Palmer said he first hunted when he was 5 years old. That was when he lost his soul and became a psychopath. Which he is. Palmer was very into this and he has killed many big game animals over 70 as I recall. He had to know who Cecil was, how famous he was, and PALMER specifically WANTED Cecil as a trophy. He had to know. Anything else Palmer says in a LIE ,, in my opinion. There's really just no honorable way to spin this. the African Lion is an endangered species; there is literally no legal way to kill one for pleasure. So basically either he has no idea how endangered species work, or what he meant to say was "I relied on the expertise of my local professional guides to ensure an illegal hunt in which I'd escape the legal consequences. " Let's also not forget that the lion was probably accustomed to seeing the worker who lured him on a regular basis, and depending on the roll the worker played, may have trusted him a fair deal and probably didn't expect any danger. Having the animal led directly to you by someone they are accustomed to seeing on a regular basis and would expect no harm from isn't even really a hunt. This is disgusting.
