Japanese Cat Water Cake Is Taking Over Twitter In Japan

Ever heard of a water cake? It’s a clear and jiggly Japanese dessert that looks exactly like a huge drop of water. This water mochi was first served and made popular by a confectionery in Yamanashi. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, now Twitter user mithiruka shared a pic of a clear water cake in the shape of a sleeping cat.

The Internet is going absolutely crazy about it, as the photo was posted on Twitter on Sunday, and it’s gone viral in Japan since with over 23k likes and 19k retweets. If you want to make a water cake yourself, you’ll need water, sugar and Japanese agar powder. See this recipe for full instructions.

I really don't think these are cakes. It's not a big deal but cakes are flour based, this is more like a jelly.

It is. Agar is vegan jelly, derived from algae. Used in gummy candy and many other products as an alternative to gelatin. Definitely nothing magic, and nothing to do with cakes :D.
