Several generations grew up watching Tom and Jerry and were entertained by their love-hate relationship and Tom’s efforts to catch the annoying mouse. And even though it’s a cartoon, it’s not that far off from reality. Indoor cats don’t have the necessity to hunt because they are taken care of by humans, but the instinct doesn’t go away, which is why we can see cats playing with their prey and not killing it completely.

A funny video of a cat letting a mouse drink from its water bowl went pretty viral. The owner’s name is Benjamín Sagredo and he is from Punta Arenas, Chile. He shared a video of his cat Simon just staring at a mouse and it blew up on the internet.

A black cat named Simon became an internet superstar when his owner shared a video in which the feline became friends with a mouse

The cat’s owner, Benjamín Sagredo, was hearing weird noises from the kitchen. They were not constant or very loud so the man didn’t take much notice of it. But eventually he found out what it was all about.

Turns out, he had a mouse living in the kitchen. Which was very surprising to him as he has a cat and cats should hunt mice. However, Simon is not like that. The owner of the black cat told The Dodo, “I decided to record it. I thought no one would believe me.”

The owner, Benjamin, was telling the cat to catch the mouse, but Simon was just looking at it and seemingly petting it

In the video, it can be seen that Simon is allowing the mouse to drink his water and just staring at it. After a while, he reaches out his paw, but very carefully and not menacingly at all.

Benjamin, who is filming this, finds the situation both funny and absurd. He says to his cat that he shouldn’t be making friends with the mouse and letting him drink his water and should catch it.

Simon is a sweet cat who grew up with two dogs but Benjamin still was surprised by the friendship with a mouse

In an interview with T13, Benjamin revealed that Simon grew up with two border collies, so when describing his personality, the owner mentions that Simon is almost like a third dog.

He also shares that he befriended the mouse too and named it Chefcito, which means Little Chef in Spanish. Benjamin told The Dodo, “He’s been back several times. “We love that Simon accepts him. He’s a very affectionate and sociable cat. If Chefcito keeps coming, we’re going to have to adopt him.”

Here is the cute video in which you can see the interaction between Simon and the mouse

The mouse is not running away, so it doesn't trigger the hunting instinct in the cat. The cat isn't petting it. It's poking at it to see what it will do, because it's not sure what it is.

One of the comments in the pictures tells the most likely story, the mouse is most likely infected with toxoplasmosis gondii. Simon is a well fed housecat with more experience catching purple play mice than actual mice. And this one isn't even running away. It's not petting it, more like probing what it will do.

My cat brought in a squirrel to be friends with. I got some cute pics/videos out of the deal, but I also got a bite that led to a tetanus shot and 10 days of heavy antibiotics.

Worth it, I'd say - yes, I've had my fair share of tetanus shots myself...

Of course, the danger of the homeowner doing nothing about the mouse is that the mouse starts having lots of baby mice in the walls of the house.

Hmmm, that mouse is quite fat...doesn't look like a wild mouse to me.

My cat pokes new toys like this to make sure they’re not something scary, right before pouncing on them…

I had such a lazy cat. We were walking in a field where the corn had just been harvested and stepped on a nest of mice. They ran right over my cat's paws and his only response was to shake his paw as one might when you get something unpleasant on you. The only time he did anything was to attack any new dogs or cats we brought home so that as they got older and larger than him, they would still fear him as their all might lord. All of the dogs and other cats had to wait for him to finish drinking (could take upwards of a hour) before they could drink. He would not drink after any other animal, so we had to switch out the water several times a day.

assuming this isn't staged, that;s not normal behavior for a mouse so it might be seriously ill or infected or something.

That's not a mouse. It's a rat. Tail is far too long to be a mouse!

This does not surprise me in the least. Animals and other living things share a kinship that oftentimes is beyond the everyday purview of humans because we have been led to believe and expect otherwise of these so-called “lower” life forms.

Awww I had an injured bird that had fallen from its nest. He ended up friends with our cats and used to sleep with them. Shame he was never able to fly but was very happy.

My cat did the same. He brought a mouse home and drank and ate from the same bowls side by side. Had to buy a mousetrap.

Pretty sure that's a rat, just from the tail and the size of it. Doesn't really change the story though, and makes the Toxo idea more believable. And like Lauren and Rissie commented our cats haven't learned to hunt properly. They are taken from their mothers at about 8 weeks and don't really learn those skills until around 12 weeks. If your cat ever brings you a half dead prey animal though, it's telling you that it thinks you're a rubbish hunter, so it's giving you something to practice on - just like it's mother did.

I have one special cat that will just sit and stare at mice. Not make friends, but not even attempt to catch it. My other cats are far different, but she has always been my personal favorite “special” kitty in more ways that one.

I know others have said it, but the owner of this cat should urgently have both it and themselves tested for the Toxoplasma gondii parasite. Toxoplasmosis is not a benign disease. https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/toxoplasmosis/biology.html
