Guy Wonders What’s Wrong With His Cat Who’s Obsessed With A Single Wall In The House, Investigation Leads To Discovery Of A Hidden Basement

Cats attain internet fame for all kinds of reasons. Some garner a legion of fans due to their distinct looks, others do it with their quirky personality. But there’s one kitty, Tucker, who stood out for his persistence.

It all started with his owner, Reddit user TuckerTroubles14, making a post on the subreddit r/CatAdvice, asking for help in explaining the animal’s behavior. You see, Tucker became obsessed with one specific wall in the guy’s house.

However, the online search for answers eventually reached a dead end. So the man expanded it to real life and tore a hole where Tucker would stare for hours on end.

14-year-old Tucker was your average cat, leading a very enjoyable and pretty chill life

But one day, everything changed and he became obsessed with one specific wall in his owner’s house

People took an immediate interest in Tucker’s story. And many of their explanations revolved around the fact that he can pick up things that his owner simply has no way of detecting.

Lucy Hoile, a Certified Clinical Animal Behaviorist (CCAB) who specializes in cats, told Bored Panda that a cat’s senses are perfectly honed for hunting. For example, “their eyes are highly effective in low-level light, (when prey is most active) and they are sensitive to fast-moving objects.” Hoile said. “Their ears are mobile and are shaped to help locate prey and they are sensitive to higher-pitched frequencies similar to some rodent vocalizations. Scent is used heavily in feline communication and maintaining territory.”

Dr. Carly Patterson, a clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, said cats can see in near darkness because they can dilate their pupils and they have a special reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum that allows them to reflect more light to the back of the eye.

Plus, cats, like many other animals, have an extra fold on their ears, called Henry’s Pocket. Patterson said the exact function of this feature is not known, but many believe it helps to enhance high-frequency sounds. Signals that may be inaudible to people, such as the squeak of a mouse, are easily heard by cats.

“Cats hear sounds of varying frequencies and they are especially adept at hearing high-frequency sounds,” Patterson said, adding that we should be aware of it because “Sounds that humans may perceive as normal background noise could be stressful to the cat.”

For instance, the buzz from an LCD computer screen can be loud and annoying to cats. (Luckily, this problem can be greatly reduced by turning electronics off when we’re not using them.)

People tried to get to the bottom of Tucker’s weird behavior

Hoile said that out of all the cat’s senses, smell is arguably the most important to it. “They establish their territory through scent-marking important objects by facial rubbing or scratching, helping their home smell safe and familiar,”  the animal behaviorist explained. “They are sensitive to any unexpected changes in the scent profile in their environment, particularly those they are not able to investigate such as the new smells emanating from behind the wall in this case.”

While cats have far fewer scent receptors than canines, Patterson said recent research has shown that cats may be better at discerning between different smells.

However, these animals aren’t better than us at everything. Yes, they have superb vision and hearing, but their ability to taste is comparably weaker than ours.

Patterson explained that cats lack the sweet taste receptor, so even if they seem attracted to some sweet foods, they’re probably detecting only fat and texture.

To enhance their senses of touch and balance, cats use their whiskers.

Patterson highlighted that whiskers are located in several places on a cat’s body, though the pattern changes with different cat breeds.

“Whiskers are strategically located on a cat’s face to transmit critical sensory information, such as the ability to fit through passageways, potential obstacles, and even a sense of overall balance,” she explained.

Although house cats tend to spend more time napping than hunting, their senses give them abilities that are shared with many of the world’s top predators.

So it’s clear that Tucker was onto something!

After a while, OP came back with unexpected news

“The guy from the story was right to take Tucker to the vets to rule out a medical cause,” Lucy Hoile said. “Feline dementia or other medical conditions can cause odd changes in behavior and any changes should be checked out.”

But it’s also important to know that sometimes cats need a break. “They are easily overstimulated by excessive environmental noise or strong smells and tend to take themselves away to avoid them,” Lucy Hoile explained. “Spending extended periods of time hiding or outside away from the home can be signs they are upset by something in the environment. In some cases, overstimulation can lead to aggressive behavior, particularly if the experience is unexpected, won’t go away, or is particularly intense.”

Of course, felines vary as to the extent to which they like petting or handling and for how long they tolerate these without finding it aversive. They also vary greatly in warnings before retorting to aggressive reactions when those signals are neglected or ignored.

To help people develop a healthy way of petting their cat and to be safe, San Francisco SPCA provides these tips:

  • Keep your petting sessions short and focus on the areas where the cat truly enjoys your touch. For example, most cats like to rub their faces or bodies on an offered hand, but do not appreciate long strokes over their bodies. Just observe your pet; if it generally gets aggressive when you’re petting the tail base, don’t do that!
  • Observe for signs of overstimulation and impending aggression. Cats almost always give clear warning signals before biting or scratching! It can be difficult to pick up on them at first but some of the most common ones include: tail swishing or flicking, skin twitching over the back, flattening of the ears, freezing, tenseness or staring, quick head turn to watch your hand as you pet, pupillary dilation, low growl, or walking away and lying down.
  • Stop petting your cat if you witness these early warning signals.
  • Wait before attempting to pet your cat again. Just remember that while some only take a few minutes to settle down, others can take several hours. Make sure that all signals of irritation have stopped.

Remember that punishment is not the way to address these behaviors. It will not make your cat more comfortable with handling or less aggressive. In fact, yelling or even hitting your cat will only make it fear you or become even more aggressive. The only way to address these behaviors is avoidance and proper handling and play etiquette.

The investigation continued

And eventually the mystery was solved… Well, mostly

People were glad to hear that Tucker (and his owner) were okay

I just remembered an incident that made headlines in the 60s: ''AMERICAN AMBASSADOR TO MOSCOW SAVED BY CATS''. The diplomat's Siamese cats suddenly became obsessed with a spot on the wall. This was at the height of the Cuban missile crisis and the wall was immediately opened....to reveal several electronic listening devices. The cats had heard sounds outside the human hearing range.

Great post! I love stories like this and the Tucker element adds a delightfully creepy touch but what I really love about this post is the OP's writing. In a day when many, many people can't be bothered to use punctuation, write out the entire word "your" or look up a word they don't know how to spell, well-crafted writing like this really stands out!. Nicely done.

It is so odd and annoying that BP uses PHOTOS THAT HAVE NO CONNECTION TO THE OP OR ARTICLE as article headers to scroll through and also in the middle of articles. They did it in this one. Misleading.

It wasn't smells that the cat got interested in, it most likely was the water dripping into the basement it heard. very few cats care for water, and suddenly hearing water dripping into ones home you can't see or access must have really upset the cat. Cats like humans, can dream and daydream, so obviously, it was scaring itself by what it did not understand.

Loving the story!! An off-note on animals and their senses. I moved into a mobile home few years ago and my 3 dogs were terrified to go into my bedroom at the back of the home. Had always slept with me (couldn't make them get out of my bed) but for some reason that room scared them so bad they all slept together in another room. An American bulldog, a boxer and a min schnauzer. All were prey driven so I know it wasn't an animal they were sensing. I moved within the month-i trust my pets instincts that something wasn't right. Nothing like this since in other homes. Any suggestions on reason? I'm thinking it was bad to scare them like this.

I'm not sure what the reason could've been, but that would definitely freak the eff out of me too. Lol. I don't know if I would've made it the month. Especially all three of them wouldn't dare go in there even with you. That's too creepy.

My theory, knowing a German descendant built this home. His soul could be trapped in the house. Many time they would place objects in the walls, example shoes. Trapping their selves their.

DUDE! I would get a buddy's long ladder and go down there, or better yet, call city hall dept. of records and ask if there are original plans for your house on file! If there are, see if they will send you online access to them snd look at the plans. If you can read a blue print, and at the same time, since plans have to be approved to change it, ask for any if the newer blue prints also! Once you have them snd you can print them out, look to see where it actually is. Then, See if the library has any info they could send you online access to, about the homes' history. A mystery in the making! Tuckers' hidden basement mystery!

There are many forms of energy that science cannot yet measure. Only 150 years ago, we had no way of measuring radioactivity, ultrasound or radar, to name just a few. People were terrified of bats because nobody could figure out how they navigated in the dark. I personally witnessed my cat seeing a super-fast type of lightning strike that travels form the ground up before the strike that comes down from a cloud. He was very agitated but I had no idea why until 10 years later when I saw a scientific article describing the phenomenon. Try contacting the physics department of a local university to see if there are sounds here beyond the human hearing range, which is very limited. I have also discovered that most animal psychics are authentic, so please don,t rule this out either.

REALLY....I have never put down a story in magazines books paper etc is this another gimmick to make me put down my cell phone I a mad way or keep it on in my hands waiting for more?? I need an up date of the owner of the Man (Tall)...Basement (Dark) .. cat (Sweet) ...House (Mysterious) .....I can not see HANDSOME it he gives another update to what it happening to the wall floor and flooded extra room..which makes an excellent addition to the house..I would gain a conveyor Belt to help clear out the crumbles wall which I would full be glad to remove..and rebuild it with a new concrete Brick wall and then digging up some flooring enough to add inches for guy to stand up straight Six feet tall and he has to stop?! Add enough to pour a slab, add a drain out let don't forget to scream it at both ends...add sheetrock ceiling insulate it as well and add a nice wood floor so talking some three feet or four takeout old coal heater...add spiral staircase and you have a man cave..

We had a similar thing in our house but by no means as interesting as this. We have 14 cats & any one of them at no particular time would sit by a certain area of our living room wall & just stare at it. When our exterminator company was due for the next visit I mentioned it to them. They looked around & saw that there was bat dung around the site so they did what they do & we had the area walled in so the bats would find another place to wall up pardon the pun. We always listen to our cats when it comes to anything unexplainable because it's their home as well & they're all so protective of their family & the house. So anytime there's anything that's amiss we pay attention to the boys instincts & follow their lead. What an amazing story about your handsome Abyssinian being diligent about the wall. Steak dinners for life for you & Tucker I say. Best of luck to you both & make sure your friend has a few steak dinners here & there for helping you & tucker get peace of mind. ❤️😻

WOW, such a mystery, no bugs, or bodies, of course our cats, know things long before we do, I think even if a house, inspection was done, none of the strange partial basement, would have been discovered, now my heart goes out to the young man, I can assume, the cost to fix the house, may be big bucks, if that news comes out, I hope a go fund me, is planned, the house is unlivable, good luck to Tucker and his dad !!!

Animals can be very spooky. I have two dogs I sleep with, that every once in a while, will bolt upright, sit beside each other on the end of the bed, and stare into the dark hallway. Creeps me out every single time. I've always jumped up myself and run to check, but there is never anything there. I think it must be animals in the attic.

So the cat heard the noises behind the wall to find a gap and a old coal chute...then a old portion of the original basement..with a garbage bag behind a collapsing stone wall and a garbage bag..literally thats it...hope you read this before this ridiculously long and copy pasted article...bored panda literally lets anyone "write for them"

The house I grew up in located in Pittsburgh had a coal cellar. You could see through a small iron grate into the cellar from outside of the house, but we had no way of accessing the cellar from inside without tearing up the flooring. Always creeped me out a little.

I really started to get into this article, before long I thought I was reading a creepy fiction, but it’s real.

Cats are interesting for sure. Good story line here and I'd like to follow the rest. Thanks for sharing.

That's a really cool story and a really awesome cat who's trying to save his owner.

That's so crazy, imagine if Tucker didn't notice and they continued living there until it caved in 😶

We need to know more about it. Honestly the cat saved the owner. Otherwise the house will collapse

What an idiot for waiting two weeks to look behind a wall!

I sometimes think we are too afraid to look what's behind a wall. There are places in my house I have still not explored, and do not intend to.

Hmmm, I call shenanigans. The original post is from over a year ago, and the last post from this person was 10 months ago. And then nothing. So I think it didn't really happen and was a creative writing exercise.

veterinarian here: this could be a neurological sign of some kind of damage to the brain or illness like epilepsy, tumor, poisoning, parasite, etc. I would take the cat to the vet specialising in neurology
