I clip kitty's nails. He's super lazy and doesn't wear his nails out, so if I don't clip them he gets stuck on things while walking around. But I don't have to restrain him or anything, I just hold him in my lap for his trims, and then when he's done I pet his belly.

Some cats have issues with scratching things they shouldn't and this is a good way to keep them from ruining things (and much preferable to declawing), and for me specifically one of my cats has an ingrown claw that needs to be clipped to keep it from growing into her paw. I agree with you that it's uncomfortable for the cats, but sometimes it's needed, either for health reasons or to try and save furniture. That last one is arguable between sacrificing the cat's comfort for objects, but I think if scratching posts are provided and the cats are still scratching furniture or curtains, then dulling their claws is ok

You need to trim cats claws if they are indoor animals, obviously a scratching post helps too. Nevertheless I would never try to squeeze any of our cats in one of these. We rehearsed with them from the beginning so it’s rather easy to do in your lap. They don’t love it but they let us do it.

You sometimes need to do it with indoor cats that don’t get enough wear and tear on their nails. Never had to with outdoors cats that scratched on actual trees.

my elderly cat cannot retract her claws properly anymore. they snag on things and she would trip over or get stuck. It is like trimming a birds claws, you just take the tip and stay well away from the quick (interior blood supply). I had a pet shop walk me through how to do it, after I can in asking about special scratching posts to help stop her getting stuck to things
