Samsung Presents Its New Sustainable Cardboard TV Boxes That Can Be Reused As Cat Houses And Other Things

Can you think outside the box? Well, honestly, that’s all we do in quarantine.

But Samsung is inviting you to think outside the cardboard box as it unveils the eco-packaging for its TV lineup. The boxes feature a dot matrix across their surface for you to follow and make something entirely new. And that’s where it gets cool. With little to no effort, you can craft a mini shelf, an entertainment stand, a coffee table, and even a feline castle for your cat princess. I mean, they surely are crazy for boxes, so you can’t go wrong on this one.

Got better ideas? You may wanna try your luck at the Dezeen x Samsung Out of the Box Competition, which offers a prize of $20K for the best upcycling solution. Scroll down below for Bored Panda‘s interview with Benedict Hobson, the chief content officer at Dezeen, to find out more about the competition and how to win it.

Usually, electronics companies use thick corrugated cardboard boxes to protect the objects inside while shipping. But according to Dezeen, “These boxes often end up as waste, as they are difficult to recycle in an average home.” They end up making “90 billion tons of cardboard and paper that’s being discarded every year in the US alone.”

Samsung’s eco-packaging concept is designed to creatively upcycle the boxes by following the matrix pattern printed on top. The boxes come with luxe TVs like “The Serif,” “The Sero,” and “The Frame.” Each can be easily transformed into furniture, household objects, and handy item.

According to Kangwook Chun, the Executive Vice President and Head of Product Strategy Team at Samsung Electronics, this is a way to connect to consumers who seek to live in a more sustainable fashion. “Consumers are more likely to purchase from a brand that shares similar fundamentals and values as they do, and with our eco-packaging, we believe that we can provide our customers with a new experience that considers the environment as an important way to express themselves,” said Kangwook.

Bored Panda contacted Benedict Hobson, the chief content officer at Dezeen, to find out more about Dezeen X Samsung Out of the Box Competition. The competition is free to enter for anyone over the age of 18 in any country around the world, with prize money for the best entrants totaling $20,000. Entries close on 29 May 2020, and the shortlist of the best cardboard designs will be published on Dezeen in July.

Dezeen and Samsung are looking for a set of specific features when it comes to the best designs. Benedict explained: “We’re looking for innovative designs that are both useful and functional, as well as being desirable objects that look good in the home.”

In order for people to upcycle their TV box, “the resulting object needs to be something that they really want to have in their home and fits in well with their lifestyle.”Benedict told us that they’ve received over a hundred entries so far, but expect most of them to come in close to the deadline. “This is the fourth design competition Dezeen has run with Samsung, and people usually submit their entries at the last minute!”

The boxes can be repurposed into many objects, including a magazine rack

I'm tempted to buy a Samsung TV now just to turn the box into a cat house.

In my experience, Samsung makes top notch smart TVs, so you'd get a nice bonus with your new cat house.

Then you can use the cardboard to make patterns for wooden versions! Scale the house for kids, or for adults!
