Artist Illustrates Relatable Moments From Life With A Cat, And Many Cat Owners Can Relate (35 New Pics)
Interview With ArtistAny cat owners out there? Today, we're excited to share more of Nick Filippou's work. This artist is known for his relatable comics that capture the everyday reality of living with a cat. While the author's cat Minnie is undeniably his biggest muse, some of his new strips also feature additional characters - a dog and even a baby! As you can imagine, having this wonderful trio around must be truly inspiring and, at times, quite challenging.
In our previous interview, the artist told us about his comic series: “Art is expression. Most of my comics are inspired by real events. These comics are an outlet of what I’m feeling and it’s helped me with all the highs and lows of real life."

No matter how hard my two are napping, they always find their way to the bathroom when I go. As I'm on water pills, I go a LOT, so they don't sleep much during the day.
While nearly all of my previous cats have done this to one extent or another, my current Orange Boi (Happy Gotcha Day, His Royal Fuzziness, Samson Chester Marmalade Nimitz) rarely does. When it's me in the bathroom, he'll take a quick glance to make sure who's in there, then turn his back and sit guard until I'm done.
Hence why I leave my bathroom door cracked open. And I live by myself 😂🙂
Might as well leave the door ajar because you will get no peace otherwise.
We reached out to Nick Filippou again to ask a couple of questions regarding his recent work. First, we wanted to know what, in his opinion, are the most rewarding aspects of being a comic artist. We found out that: “One of the most rewarding aspects of being a comic artist are the messages and comments from fans. I love seeing how my comics made people laugh or how they sparked memories of how their cat did the exact same thing in my comic. Cat people are my people, lol. The process of creating a new comic is also rewarding in itself. It starts with an idea that forms in your head and you get to play and experiment with it and bring it to life.”
My dog does that too. The cat has a cat door, so he doesn't meow to be let out, but he does walk around meowing to complain about the cold (though it never gets cold enough to snow where I live).
My cat right now in the hundred plus degree weather. Angry she can't go on the porch, though if I open the door she'd step outside and then want right back in. But then she'd forget 5 minutes later. Because cat.
My cat was the same a few weeks ago xD he wanted out byt there was construction across the street (loud) which he hates. Got him harnessed up and he steps a few paw steps out when *BRRRRRRWWWWRRR* wants back in RIGHT away. Second we go back in he wants out xD in his defense he was still high from his vet trip meds (to keep him mellow for the trip)
I remember reading a story called 'The Door into Summer' about a cat going from Door to door looking for warm weather in the dead of winter, certain that one of would lead him to summer.
Frenetic random activity periods sounds so much less... Zoomie? 😂
Load More Replies...We hoomans we do have our faults but we sure do know how to entertain ourselves.
I don't know what the bathroom did to deserve such punishment, but yesterday morning, it was quite thoroughly pounced to death.
We were also wondering how Filippou stays motivated and continues creating on a regular basis. The artist told us: “Drawing comics is my creative outlet and is the deeper motivation that keeps me going. Not every comic or creation will be ‘successful’. You have to create comics for you. It’s a nice bonus if fans enjoy it too.”
I once got a gift basket wrapped in clear cellophane. Image how hard it was not to laugh, when my cat hid in it, and her tail started swishing when I called her.
Very common with kittens. However, my 9 year old void, Jack, will still get that crazed look on his face and go after my feet sometimes. Guess he’s a perpetual kitten. A 9 year old, 15 lb kitten.
Our Jack is nearly fifteen, but still sometimes does this. And he doesn't take prisoners.
Load More Replies...AWWWWW! It's a rescued stray cat! The clipped ear means it was captured, neutered, and then returned to the streets.
At one point I had 4 cats. I woke up in the middle of the night unable to move my legs. I'm screaming "I can't move my legs! There's something wrong with my legs!!" When my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I realized there were 4 cats draped over and around my legs. If I had to go to the bathroom really quick, I never would have made it.
My cat knows I hate this. She now does it when she wants me to get up and do things for her. She's too smart for her own good.
Asked how his style has evolved over time and what factors influenced these changes, Nick explained: “My style has evolved a lot over time and that’s all part of the process. My first comic was on a whiteboard in the kitchen of my apartment that made my girlfriend (now wife) laugh. She encouraged me to share the comics on social media and I started with just a pencil and paper. They were awful! That led to different pencils, pens, and papers as I tried to find my style. I ultimately use Procreate now on the iPad and I look back at some of my older comics, even just a year ago, and they look really different to me. It reminds me of one of my favorite comics by Sarah Andersen. In the comic, a fan asks how she draws so well, and Sarah replies ‘practice’. The fan ignores Sarah and thinks it's just natural talent. Sarah again replies ‘practice’. The fan just chalks it up to something totally out of anyone’s control, to which Sarah Andersen says again... ‘practice’.
‘Sucking at something is the first step towards being sorta good at something’ – Jake The Dog.”
We once had a very large, elderly Bengal for his last few years. We got a new refrigerator and here was Leo, digging and chasing his tail like a kitten. I don't think he'd ever had a box big enough before that.
That’s why I just get myself something special delivered, because I need the box for my cats.
There's a meme floating around of a cat in a tree and the captions are informing the other household cats that the Amazon truck is bringing them more boxes
Took my mom's cats 6 MONTHS to stop being terrified of the cat tree I had built for them, complete with cozy hidey holes and sleeping perches and all sorts of kitty fun stuff. They were ALL about the box it came in though!! Yet once they finally decided to go exploring on the tree they abandoned the box and never went back 😂
My cat will sleep on a Mcdonald's cheeseburger wrapper when it's open as I use it as a plate😑 not your ideal clean cat when you see little bits of onions and ketchup in her fur
Load More Replies...My childhood cat loved sleeping on laundry, especially if it was clean. She did like boxes some, though!
Boxes, paper bags, plastic bags, laundry baskets, open suitcases, gym bags....
Doesn't work for my cat. For her, you have to put somewhere high for her to climb. Or tuna treats.
We were curious if Filippou could describe the most challenging part of creating a comic and how he usually manages to overcome obstacles or difficulties during the creative process. Filippou shared with us: “One of the most challenging parts of creating a comic that not many people know is that I’m colorblind. I have some of my colors saved and labeled in Procreate when possible (like the color of Minnie), but I still need to run things by my wife to make sure ‘Hey, does this look okay?’. Even simple things like the color of a wall can be challenging for me and I’ll have to ask for help.”
She is darkness personified! Be afraid, soft can-opener!
My little blind cat must sit in my lap even if it's just a 10 second pee. "I'll never p00p alone."
Human • »I have to go to the bathroom...« ••• Cat • »WE have to go!«
Load More Replies...You missed the one where they fall asleep in the underwear that’s down at your ankles.
My Maya, 12 yr old torbie, must sit in my pants/shorts. Then she looks up at me
Why is it that cats love to interrupt you when you go to the bathroom whether for a shower, bath, to do your business or just to clean it they bombard you. I can’t close the door fast enough sometimes if I need my privacy and that paw under the door always so adorable and cracks me up 💖😇👍🏼💖🐈💖🐈⬛💖
Nick continued: “Another major challenge that every artist encounters frequently is that ideas don’t always come so easily. Sometimes you have blocks. Another favorite comic of mine is by The Oatmeal called 'Creativity is like breathing'. He discusses that when you create, it's like exhaling. But… you can’t exhale forever. Eventually, you’ll need to breathe in. So you can't force it and keep exhaling, you need to take a step back, breathe in, and feed your mind in other ways. Inspiration will always come.”
My cat Chevy is the opposite. Call him and he's like yes? You called? Let me see these people but they cannot touch me.
Lastly, we asked how the artist balances the creative aspects of his work with the business side of things, such as marketing and promotion. We found out that: “It is a balancing act and an ever-changing learning experience for both the creative and business side of things. Think of how the social media landscape has changed over the years. I posted mainly on Facebook when I first started, then started posting more on Instagram, then began posting videos on YouTube, then TikTok came… Now there’s Threads? Each has its own marketing nuances and business experiences which are constantly evolving! I try not to worry so much about the business side because, at the end of the day, I create comics because I enjoy it. That’s the most important piece. I don’t want to ever take away from that. The business side will work itself out.”
That tiny gap between the mattress and headboard is perfect for 2:00am head attacks.
Forgot the hairball section next to bed that you discover in morning barefoot 😑
Yes, but it is much more fun for sleeping if your human is already laying on it and you can use them as a bed.
I have spread a blanket over the bottom part (where my feet are, up to around the knees) and my cat knows exactly that that that's his part of the bed. He doesn't go off that blanket. So no hairs or litter debris on my sleeping area 😃
Especially if they found the trash themselves. Or stole it themselves.
One of my previous cats would play fetch with you for HOURS, but it had to be a ball made from a crushed cigarette soft pack...
My mother's cat steals socks and undies. My mom thinks it's funny because it's not her socks and undies. Yet.
Bouche stole socks. I'd buy her socks (human) of her own, which she wouldn't touch.
Load More Replies...Don’t be distracted by the floofy cuteness, there’s a cunning creature underneath. Cats can be incredibly smart and clever. Believe me, I’ve been a cat person since childhood.
Cats are smart. At least, my cat is smart. Humans train dogs. Cats train their humans.
Of course we do. Most soft can-openers are mentally defective, though, and it's hard to train them.
Load More Replies...One of our now dearly departed cats, Smudgy, started out as an outdoor cat, then we adopted her and she was an indoor/outdoor cat. She knew how to hunt. But when she became the neighborhood serial killer of small birds, animals, and reptiles—-I can’t tell you the grisly sights we would see when we got home from work, some were so bad we couldn’t tell what the animal used to be—-we brought her inside permanently. She did however continue to be a good, and of course ruthless, mouser.
I had a cat that was almost the same. Her name was Mia, and she is also gone too, sadly. However, we continued to allow her to be an indoor/outdoor cat. Chimpmunks, mice, and baby rabbits stood no chance
Load More Replies...A mouse that's now behind the wardrobe, clumsy hoomin, why didn't you catch it!
Our cats once caught a mouse and brought it to me in bed. It was still alive too.
One time, our cat caught a live mouse, and Dad said, "Just KILL it, buddy!".
I hate when they taunt and play with their prey whether it’s a mouse or bug they’ll play with it and torture it to death. The poor creature probably begs for a mercy killing and wishes they’d just finish them off if I catch them at it I will take it away and end it quickly I hate their playful torture but I’m sure to them it’s just natural. They usually kill flies the quickest with a swat or a pound them into the ground. Cats are vicious killers just like their big cousins the lions.💖😇👍🏼🐈⬛🐈
Mine always brings us live presents then just watches us getting rid of them.
True. When I was little, I used to pile all my dolls and stuffed animals on my bed, and suddenly we’d magically be on a sailing ship having adventures. Sometimes one would fall off the bed, so we’d have a toy overboard, and (as the Captain, of course) I would have to “dive in and swim out” to rescue them. Children’s imaginations are a wonderful thing sometimes.
Yes, we really lose something as we grow up. Sad.
Load More Replies...It's the Anything Toy! I had a Starfleet shuttlecraft (refrigerator box), a replicator (wide shoe box), a tricorder (Crayola 24 box), and half a million other ones. All of them had been waterproofed by my grandparents and I kept each different "scene" in a different area of their property that usually only I went to. When I was done playing, all of them went into the biggest box of the "scene" (which also had a couple big rocks in them to keep them from blowing away) so I'd have them for the next time. Sticks, water pistols, and various other things rounded out the props for each "scene" and my imagination was absolutely my best friend!
Love the vein diagram 🤣 Edit: ugh autocorrect, I meant Venn
Siamese are adorable little weirdos by default... My little mix definitely does not have that "fear of vacuums" region! Had to buy another little dust buster to clean my car because my 15 year old Siamese mix claimed the first one as his personal grooming device! He comes running whenever I turn it on and rolls around so I can vacuum his whole body and face with the brush attachment!😂 Favorite and most effective grooming device I now have lol

My cat's tuna can detector is a much larger portion of her brain. She loves her tuna (and other seafoods).
Also, cats have no authority. They are the authority.
Load More Replies...all of these are on point, although my cat is scared of nothing and definitely not vacuum cleaners (she sits in front of them as if challenging it to come close, which makes it very difficult to vacuum)
True, like their being welcomed by the alpha dog/cat. My tiny great niece was fully welcomed. Big a*s Alaskan Malamute laid right down with his nose touching her leg. She was 5lbs6oz, he was 126lbs. Imagine the difference in size. Have a pic as proof.
my cat sat directly in front of the television on new years day as everyone was celebrating in ny, so instead of fireworks and couples kissing we got a view of my cat chilling there (we didnt really mind lol)
My guy loves watching TV... Rather intently. Lol though for some reason he just HAS to join the show and paw the screen for horses running around playing, or strangely, competitive pole dancing. 😆 To their credit, it's incredibly acrobatic and athletic as a sport! Plenty of movement to chase 😂
Bouche loved cat videos on Pet Connection. She'd watch other animals on it, but she loved cats.
Audi pounces Bouche's tail. Bouche gets mad. One sign of a mad cat is a wagging tail. Audi thinks she's playing with him, and he just keeps pouncing it.
my family's puppy is unintentionally aggressive while playing so our older dog never wants to play. however, our cat will sometimes claw at the puppy in annoyance and he thinks its playing... so far she hasnt done anything worse than pouncing and swatting at him, so we dont interfere
When my cat gets in one, she's a "cat in the box" happens quite often. Empty box, that's what I'll end up calling her. I will not put any boxes in for recycling until she loses interest in it. What us humans do for our furry babies
Mine have never stopped attempting to summon various demons and open random dimensional portals...
I'd rather have the cherry pies in the same box with the cutie pies. Since that's not a choice, the cutie pies are an excellent choice
I build the box forts for the kittens, hubby throws them out on recycling day. Tip: use a few different sizes of hole saw attachments to make lots of different amputation ports in the kitty castle.
I thought the covered up word was motherfuckered my plants, then I realised it says murdered.
except when they decide to wake you up 1 to 2 hours before the alarm goes off
Load More Replies...Yes she does. My little fat one is a relentless food hound... She comes running from ANYWHERE if she hears the sound of whipped cream, used to "popcorn" herself when she was younger-- essentially a spontaneous backflip followed by a begging scream, and sticks her head right into the bag to steal a donut. 😂 (For the record, NO I don't let her eat that or any excess... she's obese and very VERY persistent to get to food in difficult places)
THAT SQUINT THO-IT IS LIKE " I don't wanna get up but I don't wanna fix anything, which I would have to get up for..."
Literally must be my Kitty's doppelganger! 😂 relentlessly steals and attempt to consume anything interesting..makeup brushes, bubblewrap, EVERY cell phone charger... Feels compelled to open and investigate every door or cabinet for items to steal, even if he's seen what's inside minutes before, then gets annoyed by the fact it isn't different lol... routinely runs laps across my face in bed, including a delightful long stretch/ borderline teabagging for funzies, and being a typical mostly Siamese mix, has A LOT to say, ALL. THE. TIME. With a meow that can only be described as sounding like Fran Drescher's laugh in 'the Nanny' 😆(90s US TV throwback lol)
These are all too true. Winnie seems like a clone of my cat nyx.
On the artist's Youtube channel you can see Minnie in real life, and it's awesome: https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCVYN_6dCSN9yGImu4yGiXow
Yes, she was a former stray cat and spayed, the vets cut a little bit off their ear so that the cats will not be caught again.
