We Fell In Love With This 33-Pound Cat, So We Decided To Adopt Him And Start His Weight Loss Journey
Hi, my name is Mike Wilson and together with my girlfriend Megan Hanneman we have a company that makes wall-mounted cat furniture designed to promote activity for indoor cats. We have two cats who help us test our furniture ideas and let us know their favorite pieces. A couple of months ago, we decided to bring a new kitten into our home to join the two cats we had already. One day, when we only had 45 minutes before we had to be at work, we decided to head over to our local Humane Society to have a look around. When we walked in, we were instantly drawn to this gentle giant named Bronson. The receptionist told us that to go in and see him we would first need to sit down and be interviewed by a staff member. The Humane Society was backed up to the point that we weren’t able to see Bronson in person and so the first day all we saw of him was his backside. He made us wait for the front.
After we left, neither of us could stop talking about him and how much fun it would be to bring him home and help him lose the extra pounds. We went back to the Humane Society the following day, shortly after they opened, and sat down with a staff member. She told us that all the Humane Society knew about Bronson’s past was that his last owner passed away. Since he was all the way up to 33 pounds and only three years old, they suspected it was an elderly person who may have been feeding him table scraps or something. We went in to meet him and instantly fell in love. I remember my cheeks hurting from smiling for so long.
Bronson was so affectionate and sweet and was happily kneading his cat bed when we first petted him. All of a sudden, we noticed that he was a polydactyl cat with extra fingers and had very pronounced thumbs! Even more adorably, his paws oddly resembled our home state of Michigan. He was the sweetest cat we had ever met and he seemed so happy to be home and have a big space of his own.
After bringing Bronson home, we scheduled his first visit to the vet. While we were there, we found out that Bronson is also quite the ladies man. All the doctors and vet techs were taking turns coming in the room to admire his robust body, cute face, and mittens.
It’s very important for heavy cats to lose weight slowly, or else they can get Fatty Liver Disease, which can be a fatal illness. We have adjusted Bronson’s diet three times since we got him, but we think that he’s on track to safely lose this weight. He’s currently on 375 calories per day. Half of them are from the kibble the Humane Society had him on and half are from the grain-free wet food we’re weaning him onto. We’ve also changed his exercise routine a few times. At first, it was playing with toys with him laying down for about 20 minutes a day and also carrying him downstairs so that he needed to climb back up to get to his favorite napping spot.
After a few times of seeing him hustle up the stairs, we started worrying about doing damage to his joints or it hurting him while he was making the journey back up and decided to hold off until he’s a little more fit. Currently, his exercise routine is made up of moving his food dish around the room to promote walking, I feel like we’ve lost points with him on that one, and still playing with toys while he’s laying down. His absolute favorite toy is a tomato filled with catnip, which he likes to attack, bite, and kick with his back feet.
We have started an Instagram account for him so that people could follow along on his weight loss journey. It’s been a little more than two months and he already has over 13,000 followers and a really nice community of people cheering him on along his way. Many of his followers have been willing to share their tips on feline weight loss and it’s also a place where we can share their ideas. Carrying Bronson became an issue early on. He’s so large and he carries a lot of weight in his chest, so there’s no great way to pick him up without feeling like we’re hurting or squishing him. To combat this problem, we invented the “transportation pillow,” which is.. just a pillow. As simple of an idea as it is, carrying him with his pillow has been a great way to get him out to our living room without making him incredibly uncomfortable.
There are many great qualities about Bronson that we find incredibly lovable. One of the cutest things is that he almost always sleeps with a pillow. He also isn’t shy about taking up too much bed real estate. We’ve pretty much split the bed into thirds and Megan and I have each taken turns at the end of the bed.
Our target goal is for Bronson to lose one pound per month and he’s currently down 1.6 pounds, so he’s well on his way to a healthy life. He’s not quite ready to join the other cats in testing the furniture up on the wall, but they know he’ll get there in due time.

Me too! I can't wait for his first venture on the furniture :P
Load More Replies...HIS. PAWS. I Mean like I can;t stop staring! he is soooo cute! And I'm moved that he found good people who not only will help him, but appreciate him and go with his little perks like pillow sleeping. It's a really hreartwarming article! Please make sure to post later on with his progress here, cause not everyone has Instagram and we'd like to see him up on those shelves!
I love hearing about people who are willing to take the time to help a kitty in need!
He's a beautiful cat! I love that you took him on and are being so cautious about his weight loss. I commend you.
I have a strong idea HOW he got so big. My mother had worsening Alzheimers....at first she could live alone (with her pets) with help from me....then it gradually worsened. Finally she had to move in with us, for nearly 5 years. Her little dog was, of course, HER dog, and she fed her and walked her. I soon noticed she would either forget to feed the dog or feed her several times a day, because she'd forgotten she'd fed her. I soon took over feeding the dog. BUT when I read that a pet was surrendered to the shelter due to an owner dying or having to enter a Nursing Home....well, there seems to me to be a high correlation between either a hugely obese pet or very underweight pet. Friend/ relatives/ neighbors of the elderly with pets MUST watch out for this, and intervene! (My late mother's dog is now "our" dog, of course.)
He is so cute and hopefully he will lose the weight he needs to for a longer life with his humans who seem like great people!
Those "mitten" paws are one of the best things ever! It makes my heart happy that we has a loving home where he is getting the care he needs to be healthy and live a long happy life.
He looks so adorable!! The video is a bit creepy though, imagine you are going to drink some water to the kitchen at 3 am, the lights are down and when passing by the stairs you see that potato figure climbing to you with its laser-beam eyes on.... I think I'd have a heart attack.
What a handsome, lovable face! No wonder his previous owner stuffed it full of treats! At his young age and with your care, I know heβll make a full recovery. Thank you for caring.
I feel ya kitty, stairs are rough when you are that overweight. Anyone else cheer when he made it to the top of them?
I'm a fat human, can this cute cat adopt me ?? Love your story so much !!! <3
OMG, Im so glad he has found you !! He will live a healthy life when his journey ends <3

Load More Replies...thank you for saving such a sweetie...it will be a long journey but totally worth it...
You can do this Bronson!! My beloved Atena died last year of Fatty Liver Disease, really hard to watch her go :'( She was overweight too, although not that much! I'm sure Bronson will be able to shed the weight and play with his friends for maaaaaany years :) I love the furniture!
Such wonderful people to give that cat a home! They have shown such kindness and love, that most people don't have i their little toe! I just know one day they will have to change his name from Benson to Slim Chipply! Keep up the good work sweet boy.
375 Calories doesn't seem enough for a cat that had way more. I understand that you want the cat to lose weight but naming such a drastic change so fast isn't a good idea. It will shock the heart and the cat can die. Just start with half of the calories that he ate and then gradually lower it down.
We're working closely with multiple veterinarians and that number is coming from them. He gets weigh-ins every two weeks. He wasn't eating all of his calories on wet food so we started feeding him extra kibble to get him to the 375 and in the last 2 weeks he gained weight. So that number is more than enough for a cat his size.

I love this guy thank you for taking him and helping this beautiful BIG boy get healthy.
You people are such wonderful parents to this cat. He really lucked out...and so did you in getting such a sweetheart.
It's @iambronsoncat Thanks!

I adore ALL fats. Fat ones, skinny ones, old and young! If you do the math, at 33 pds. he weighs the same as a 600 pd. man, size per size that is. He must lose the weight for his health or he may not make it to 5. I have a 7 yrs old plumpkin named Sam. He never eats people scraps just 1/4 a can of canned food in the am and another 1/4 at night. During the day he can eat all the kibbles he wants but he still is overweight. I don't know what to do about him as I don't want to starve him but I don't want him to end up like this baby boy! Any suggestions besides the ones this poster is using?
Honestly? Take the dry kibble away. One of my girls gains weight really easily. On a vets advise she's fed 2 small cans per day with about a tablespoon of dry. Any more of either, she gains again. She's a large kitty anyway, and tips the scale at 12 pounds when she's at a good body weight for her. Talk to your vet, get their advise.
Load More Replies...Oh best of luck! He's such a beautiful cat and he deserves to be able to enjoy his cat life. Climbing and running and just being active. He's maybe a little lazy so that's gonna be an issue. Good luck, Bronson and family.
Oh, I just love him! He looks just like my Bugs. May you all have many wonderful years together!
He's still going to be a big boy. Make sure the vet checks him for diabetes, too. We had a guy that looked a lot like him (brighter orange) that was a diabetic. I had to give him insulin twice a day - and he lived to be 18. I don't think that's his problem, and you're savvy pet owners. ... Good luck! I would say 20 pounds is his fighting weight.
My cat Charlie looks just like Bronson. I'm trying to help him to lose weight too. Charlie weighs 16.5 pounds. The issue I'm having is that sometimes Charlie won't eat -he wants people food and so he just won't eat. I end up having to make him something because the vet said he can't lose weight too fast. Do you have any advise or any recommended resources/books that might help? Thank you and good luck Bronson! He can do it!!!
Bronson is such a Lovey! So glad he found a Great Furever home! Luv the 'Roped Cat Bridge' Item on your site!
Aww what a handsome gent. I have a purge named Ollie who loves his food. Itβs hard to keep a cat on a diet, but those rolling food dispensers help, the ones where the cat needs to roll it around and work for his food.
I hope there will be an updated pic when he's lost lots of weight ???

Cats with thumbs, either a total of 6 or 7 "fingers" are common, are called "polydactyl" cats and are very, very common. Everyone thinks of Hemingway's famous multi-thumbed cats, but there are many of them, everywhere. Google it! see: http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/polydactyl-cats-the-felines-with-extra-toes
What a beautiful kitty and so lucky to have parents and a forever home with you!!
By any chance , do you know a way for a 11 year old cat to lose weight ? Bronson looks like he's a happy cat ! Keep up the great work ! My best wishes to Bronson and y'all :)
He is going to be a Big Cat anyways. Great job for taking on a cat like that. You two are rock stars.
It took years for our chunker to lose the weight but when he did it went kind of fast. It scared us to the point that we started increasing his calories to slow it down a bit. Wet food is supposed to be best for weight, but our kitty will barely touch it because he's addicted to his kibble. So we opted for the best kibble we could find, Acana.
It's great that you have a vet-approved weight loss plan! I am curious what his goal is. I can't tell how big his frame is , is he part Maine C**n, or generic mouse catcher? And if he were human, how much would he weigh?
I took my cat from 17 lbs to 12 lbs in about a year. She has a smaller frame, so 12 pounds is just about right for her. The weight loss fixed her swayback, and she's able to move around a lot better. She kept the muscle. She's now a little gorilla.
Good job, but I wonder why did last owner let him get so fat. He looks happy and sheltered!
His last owner probably loved him a little bit too much. π It's sadvan and sweet at the same time.

I just fell in love with this giant, he is so cute and adorable.
We tried to adopt a cat but the adoption ppl wanted two interviews and a chat with our landlord. We bought a puppy instead. Ppl scream hey adopt pets instead! But here fill these forms out and then come in for an interview and we need to call your references, see your home, then in a few days our "committee" will review your application. And they wonder why nobody wants to adopt animals lol.
Oh no not two whole interviews! And a chat!?! They do this to ensure that the people adopting the pet are committed enough to want to go through such a process for an animal that they are going to care for for the rest of it's life. If you can't even be bothered with the simple task of two interviews maybe it's not the right commitment for you
