Next to being a professional photographer, I also might be a bit of a castlephile. If that is even a thing. Over the years, I developed a soft spot for old castles in stunning places. It always makes me a bit sad when I find out that a great-looking castle is surrounded by ugly houses or modern commercial buildings.

No matter how impressive the castle itself may be, it immediately spoils the authentic castle vibe. However, there are still some examples where over the past centuries, little has changed and it almost feels like you are a time-traveler. These are the ones that made it onto my 'Timeless castles' list. There are many more left to collect, but here are my favorites:

I've taken the castle tour twice. It's interesting to learn about the history behind it. Sadly because of King Ludwig's death, the castle was never finished. Only about 25% of the castle was ever used/finished. Oh, and wear comfortable shoes if you want to go. It's a fairly steep climb. Otherwise be prepared to shell out some cash for the carriage ride up the mountain.

It's a very special place because it's still owned and inhabited by the family von Eltz who had the oldest parts built 800 years ago.

This is a church, not a castle. Built in the 13th century, entirely of wood, and placed just utside Notodden in South Eastern Norway

*Lac Léman, not Lake Geneva. The locals will get very annoyed with you if you call it Lake Geneva.

It's important, because the monk Martin Luther did the unthinkable here and translated the Bible (new testament) into the language of the common folk, ending the exclusive reign of the catholic clerics over the interpretation of the Bible. As the Bible surprisingly deviated quite far from what the church has been selling until then it lead to the foundation of the protestant church (Lutheran church). It also played a key element in the 1848 revolution https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wartburg
