50 Of The Most Accurate Capitalism Tweets And Jokes That Prove We Already Live In A Dystopia
Meme has become a by-word of contemporary digital culture. And that makes sense, because when you think of it, meta-jokes allow us to communicate things in a way more complex way. Sometimes, it’s the other way around. When the subject of a conversation is fundamentally intricate, it begs for an unorthodox way to talk about things.
Like, capitalism. Many of us know how painful it may be to work late hours like there’s no tomorrow, like your family doesn’t exist, to sit by the desk without a day off, trying hard to deliver your very best daily, only to realize it’s been like this for the past decade. Here you go, I just described one of the memes in this list.
And while the capitalist society is spinning its wheels harder than ever before, with long-awaited hope of minimum wage being raised to $15 in the US, these anti-capitalist memes seem more relevant than ever. Someone's calling us overdramatic?
And to whoever is not into hard topics in life, this batch of memes speak of society and its flaws in a funny, like cringe funny, “oh my, it’s me” way. Psst! Another batch of anti-capitalist jokes can be found in our previous post here.

This is a tax credit scam. The grocery store makes a donation in their name with all the money collected and gets a tax credit.
Companies get the praise and tax deductions from customer donations
Load More Replies...They're selling halos. EDIT: I mean the point isn't the donation. Giving makes people feel good, so they're doing this to gain customer satisfaction.
No, they're doing it because they can write off whatever money you donate in their taxes as charitable donations.
Load More Replies...The best part is this: They use your donated money as their own donation and write it off on their taxes. So that's wonderful.
THIS. It's the same as the Amazon smile stuff. People think it's so impressive, but it's just a way to dodge taxes.
Load More Replies...It's worse than that. They use your donation as their own to reduce their tax contribution to the community. By all means, donate to charities that inspire you, but use the tax deduction for yourself. Don't contribute to a scheme to help corporations avoid paying their share.
They actually combine your donation with theirs & a take a huge tax write off.
Plus the company can collect the donations and use them as a corporate donation which is tax deductible for them.
I live in America, and even I see it’s a sinking ship.
Load More Replies...people should always have enough to have a working roof over their heads, a bed, healthcare, and healthy food. Work should simply provide to money to improve upon lifestyle. But that would require many rich people to donate money they don't even need, so forget that.

People in USA should go out to protest to have a decent minimum wage like they did with the Black Lives Matter... they have all those billionaires, while majority needs to struggle to live a decent life...
To find out more about the complex dynamics between capitalism and internet jokes, Bored Panda reached out to Dovydas Skarolskis, a Vilnius-based connoisseur of the contemporary political and cultural climate.
First off, Dovydas said that there’s no mathematically accurate answer to whether capitalism and the free market are evil. “The economic historians defending the free market have estimated that it is only because of the ideas of capitalism and industrialization that people have been able to rise out of poverty.”
Meanwhile, he explained that many researchers and activists of the field see our contemporary society as full of various forms of exploitation. “The fight between these and many other political ideas is perfectly illustrated by the Political Compass memes that ridicule one position or the other, as well as mock the assumptions about them and the ideas behind them."
I might get downvoted for this, but I've heard many times that homeless people commit petty crimes in order to get in prison where they have a place to sleep and food to eat.
Wanna know something else? The man was black. A white man raped a woman behind a dumpster. He had a wife and everything. He was sentenced for less than a year. This man, this HOMELESS, MONEYLESS, man, robbed a bank for a measly 100 dollars. Im not saying that robbing a bank is ok, but compared to raping a women, thats nothing. America is f****d
Republicans are bitching about the 1.9t covid bill adding to the deficit. Trump’s tax cuts to the rich add more than that to the deficit every year but you don’t hear any republicans complaining about that.
Except everyone understands the sentiment, whether or not it's historically factual.
Load More Replies...According to Dovydas, when tackling a vast array of different opinions, “humor is an excellent way to find like-minded people as well as attract new people who’d be interested in the ideas or even change their point of view.”
Dovydas likes to divide all the memes and jokes that criticize capitalism into a couple of categories. “First, it’s jokes that defend more radical ideas, irony and satire. They don’t require taking extreme measures to disrupt the functioning of our society, like replacing liberal democracy run by free trade with socialist or even anarchist or communist principles of public governance.”
yes, that...that would just be terrible! i mean...yeah, they already have a few yachts, but they need more! and they don't even realize that people all around the world don't even have enough money to buy themselves food.
Load More Replies...This isn't accurate, though. It is true that the politicians mostly care about rich people's yacht money, but everyone who participates in the economy is affected by it.
That’s the real economy, which isn’t tied to government spending the way “the economy” (aka the markets and rich money) is.

He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic
Terry Pratchett GNU. It's been 6 years since he passed away.

People who can't afford to go to the dentist definitely can't afford to move to a whole new country, get a citizenship in that new country, and set up a life there
Load More Replies...Thats what socioeconomic unfairness. Rich guy buys a pair of good boots. They last him years. Poor guy buys a pair of bad shoes, because he cannot afford the good ones. Poor guy has to replace his boots every year, because they have holes. In the end poor guy pays more and more for his feet to stay warm and dry then the rich guy did.
This is like the boot theory. “Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.
This is quite true. A high-end pair of dress shoes are not only expensive, but will also last much longer in the more comfortable environment that surrounds a wealthier individual.
Toothbrushes are pretty cheap, though. I mean regular dental visits is helpful, but almost nobody is too poor to buy a toothbrush. Even if you aren’t replacing it as often as you’re supposed to. But I agree with the tweet anyway. Also if you’re poor, eat more cheese and Trident gum. It sounds insane, but Xylitol is a plant-based sugar alternative that attracts bacteria, so if it’s in gum the gum basically takes all the bacteria out of your mouth. Trident has xylitol in it and is cheap and easy to find. Cheese apparently also helps with plaque-causing bacteria? Idk I had more tooth problems after I started brushing my teeth more regularly.
For some reason lots of people like to attack single mothers and think that because they need a bit of extra support they are a drain on society. What about all the fathers who did a runner and don't help to support their offspring. The pro-birthers don't want women to have abortions but also don't want to help support the child once it is separate human.
Because it’s easier to sell people on the simple idea of resenting helping other people than the complexities of the tax dodges big corporations get in welfare.

Make sure you keep an eye on the use by dates. It's a waste of stamps if theres no apocalypse and she keeps her job and you have 3 year old expired food. Trust me, we had to clear, my MIL's larder - there were spices older than me! Oh, and cranberry sauce should never RATTLE!

These huge corporations are investor redi-tellers. So much is siphoned off all the time that there's no rainy day fund at all. Decisions are made based on quarterly investor return, not long term viability. After all, if you run it into the ground you can golden parachute away. A few thousand jobs lost? Eh, the ex CEO has a yacht. Go team unregulated capitalism!
Exactly. You know how everyone who isn't worth millions just don't manage their money carefully enough. Geez. How can anyone with half a brain even think that way let alone say it aloud?
Ok that d**k Damon Tripodi is getting incredibly annoying... Ignorant and hate filled troll.
Why is it that European countries don’t have to resort to such drastic measures to keep their ships afloat as the multiple “stimulus” measures taken by the U.S.? Do you suppose there could be fundamental flaws in the U.S. system that keeps requiring these Socialist transfusions? Just sayin’...

Load More Replies...I worked at Burger King in 1992 when I was 16. I still consider it the worst, hardest job I've ever had. I felt like an old woman by the end of every week, tired & defeated. For those who bitch about fast food workers in America potentially getting a $15.00 minimum wage, I say YOU do it! YOU go to work at a fast food restaurant & see if you think your current job is harder. See if you still think you are more deserving of a decent wage than a fast food worker is. I'd wager most people's jobs aren't as hard or as mind numbingly unsatisfying. Just this morning I saw a TikTok video of grown men raging at a fast food worker because their burgers weren't right. They called her all those filthy names that are exclusively reserved for women, the c-word, the b-word. They called her stupid, they called her ugly. They screamed & threatened. I wouldn't go back to work at a fast food restaurant if they paid $20.00 an hour!
Please give me some hint to help me understand better. How much is $8 compared with basic commodities? For example, in my country basic hourly wage is 4,8€, a kilo of potatoes is about 0.7€, a lt of milk is 1,2€, a burger is 4-8€.
Average monthly rent for a one-bedrokm apartment in the US in $1,098 a month. Working full time at $8 an hour is about $1,300 a month before taxes. Gas is is over $3.00 a gallon add on clothes, food, car payments, utilities and heaven forbid you actually want any entertainment in your life.
Load More Replies...However, Dovydas sees the flaws of this type of humor. “The biggest problem with these jokes is that they often justify historical crimes associated with radical leftist movements, or promise happiness by abandoning what we have in the name of something that has never been implemented before.”
“The second category of jokes falls under the softer criticism of capitalism and the free market that targets particular problems, exposing the absurdity of everydayness. We can name a number of problems associated with the modern free world: starting with the exploitation of third-world workers, corporate tax evasion, illegal and sometimes even legal pollution, and a number of others. In summary, the second type can be described as more moderate individuals who fight against obvious manifestations of social injustice.”
...not to mention increasing access to info that shows us what other countries do.
You mean the realization that the US is pretty f*cked up?

Load More Replies..."Trickle-up" would be more accurate, actually. Non-wealthy people spend money because they have no choice, contributing to the overall economy and benefiting society in general, including the moderately wealthy.
EXACTLY. Give people at the bottom money and it IMMEDIATELY gets spent.
Load More Replies...J. M. Keynes proved it does not work. I was decades ago, and everyone knows it... But still, some people pretend they believe in this theory so they can serve their own interests.
"Trickle down" has always puzzled me, and it always came with "a rising tide lifts all boats": How is that a good thing --- I'm shackled to this anchor, and now I'm under water and drown?
And then the big glass blames the small glasses for not working hard enough to support it.
There should be wine coming down, but a secret pipe at the bottom of each of the small glasses that takes whatever little trickles down back up to the top. Insane, mandatory expenditure on expensive clothing, vacations, cars, holiday shopping, eating out daily, medical expenses due to unavoidable unhealthy lifestyles - all built into a culture that propagates commercialism and individualism over community, family and frugality. A culture that benefits the rich and people are too blind to see it.
You forgot the not-so-hidden pipe in top glass siphoning the wine somewhere offscreen, guarded by armed men and lawyers.
Thats why job adverts should always include the pay. All over the world.

Load More Replies...The third kind is what Dovydas calls “the post-ironic” approach. “It’s when joking, or rather the act of creating a joke itself, happens just for the sake of self-realization. The person who creates or likes this kind of content can be free from political ideas, or even if one has a particular political view, they don’t have to expect to change something about it.”
According to Dovydas, it’s totally enough to make fun of the world around us to collect a few or a few more likes. “Doomers, who believe that modern capitalism is a sort of dystopia they cannot escape, also fall under this category. This third group can also be named nihilists, pessimists, and post-ironicists.”
Yeah, I saw a graph some time ago, I think it was in "There is no Planet B", can't find it now, but basically it showed that the mathematical average income of US citizens was quite high, (when you add all the money owned by private people in the country and divide by the number of citizens), but the average citizen is really poor compared to that. I mean not someone in Africa poor, but way poorer than the average income. It basically shows that money is really unevenly distributed, and in all fairness I'm glad I live in Ireland not the US ^^. Though Norway is still the best according to statistics.
There is a website called dollar street that you might be interested in. They travel the world and interview various families, some rich, some middle class and many poor. They took photos of their locks, bedrooms and tooth brushes. It's very interesting and certainly made me more grateful for what I have. https://ds-dev.dollarstreet.org/dollar-street/matrix
Load More Replies...Umm I am supposedly middle class, I know I’m not in debt... what does that make me?
Prove to whom? You don't have to impress other people with apparent wealth, then stress constantly about the bills. Try living a simpler life. You'll be a LOT happier. Personally, I think my mismatched hand-me-down furniture has character...even more so because it was free (and mostly given to me by people who were trying to impress others with their apparent wealth...lol).
I dunno...I guess I've always been middle class, but never was much concerned about trying to look rich. Worked my way through college, saved and invested starting in my 20s, but of course there wasn't so much stuff to "need" back then so it was easier to save money and LBYM without feeling like everyone else was rich because they had all the latest gadgets and fashions and cars and stuff. I see ginormous SUVs, Teslas, BMWs, Lexus and the likes pulling out of the low-income apartment complexes nearby and think WTF??? I'm driving a well-maintained 2002 Subaru...What. Ever. LOL!!
That's okay Tami, you don't have to be trying to look rich if you actually have money, you can just be rich.

There are exceptions. My daughter started her six year plan in 7th grade. She was in student government, all sorts of extracurricular things, had a 4.5 and earned a scholarship to NYU. I don't have any money. She worked for all of this. Now she has a fabulous job and isn't 30 yet. All due to grit, determination and planning. I couldn't have pulled it off; it does show you can drag yourself up though. Come to think of it, I started as a "trainee assistant" and now I have a great career 25 years on... Nothing in this hard world is handed to you, but the playing field is NOT level.
She also has you for good examples and support, not everyone has that. You say you have a great career now, so she has grown up looking at that. Of course there are always exceptions, but it's far easier for someone coming from a good family background to get ahead.
Load More Replies...There is some truth in both sides. If you want a kid that has the chance to be wealthy, you should try work your ass off at cost of any lifes comforts and know very well that unless there happens something exeptional, most of your life will be over by the time any of that has the chance of happening.
Damon Tripodi - Nobody likes you Damon. It's not because you're a horrible person, though. It's because you're a horrible person who seems compelled to share his unpleasant opinions about everything.
Yeah... But, we gotta have some understanding - he failed himself by blindly obeying the system he was born into, being a thankful slave who thinks he and his alikes owe the rich, while ... actually, no one is born owing, and no one is born entitled - both rely on obedience of the poor, who engage in a pointless, unwinnable competition of working even harder. He basically threw his life out the window for other peope to get rich, and now it is too late to admit without reasonably considering suicide.

Problem is that most socialistic economies that try to provide artificial income equity only work in a largely homogeneous population with a low percentage of minorities. Case in point - Scandinavian countries. In a more realistic scenario, a few oligarchs always end up being “more equal than others” without the regulation built into a capitalistic economy to check their growth. I’m not saying capitalism is the only way or that socialism is completely wrong. But being a highly intelligent species, maybe it’s time we came up with a new philosophy that takes the best of both? Welfare for those who need it, but freedom for those who want to progress and explore. More than anything, a less exploitative society where the welfare of many is more important than the ambition of a few.
I'm a lefty and for social market economy, but to be fair: the problem isn't capitalism itself, but lobbyism. In a capitalistic System p.e. banks wouldn't get safed with tax money. So banks would need to act more careful if they knew it's up to themselves.
Its the dream of reaching the top with hard work not getting handouts. Hard work leads to success.

Bullshit, capitalism has pulled more people out of poverty than anything else in the world
We lived in a "nice safe world where everyone's basic needs are met" for about 50 years in Eastern Europe. Fun fact: it all broke down because that sort of a world is unsustainable (and there is always a tradeoff between needs and freedoms). Bad and dangerous is the default setting of nature, on the other hand, so you could say capitalism is closer to nature, evolutionarily. Which doesn't make it fairer for all those it hurts. Which is why we invented governments to level the field a bit. And we can vote them out if they're not doing their jobs. Theoretically, alas.

I think it's natural for people to help their kids. One of the big economic inequalities tied with systemic racism is the prevention of people building that generational capital that helps the next generation access more opportunities.

Police guarding dumpster food is peak capitalism
Ryan and Edward are wrong about it being a health concern. Suing for having broken into a dumpster will get you nothing. Stores do not throw out food when it becomes a health hazard but way, way before that. They throw it when it's not considered sellable. But most of it is perfectly edible. It's 100% guarded to keep poor people from dumpster diving and getting a free meal, nothing else.

Is there more to this story? There has to be. It can’t be that stupid and pointless.
According to the articles I read, the Fred Meyer reached out to at least 2 food pantries to donate the food, but they couldn't get there in time (because of the icy roads) before regulations required them to throw it out. Some activist tweeted about the food and a crowd of passionate people showed up to get the food, but a few were jerks and aggressive/threatening to the employees. (Up until then, people got about 1/2 a dumpster's worth of food out with no issues.) So they called the cops. If those few turds would have been respectful and kind to the "essential" workers, they probably could have retrieved most of the food.

I also live in Portland and second this comment. It's ridiculous that the police bureau claims to be too understaffed to function then okays cops' policing of dumpsters.

This! We don't have to fear automation. If we want to continue to be a market-based system, we need to pay people better and reduce their hours, so they can buy the goods and continue the cycle. Automation can help make that happen.
Actually there will be a mass layoff because robots can now do your jobs.
Why is it that the same people who whine about technological advances are the same people who whine about getting off coal and converting to advanced, technology-driven green energies? I get this post.. but please, be aware, communism is actually very, very bad!! There are some major things you can apply that fall between communism and absolute capitalism. Check out western Europe, no communism there, everything's going well. Not sure if social democracy is the correct term here? Communism is awful. I just wish more Americans could see that there is a way to do society right, with just some slight allowances to the 'horrid left'. Communism is completely dead (maybe not in North Korea?) and not a threat to any civilized society anymore. Complete capitalism remains a threat to the well being of so many in the western utopia of 'civilized society'

When I was pregnant in 2007 I worked at a major lawn and garden store. They let me sit on a stool while I was cashiering. I stood up as needed and not once did the stool get in my way. No less than 2 people complained. I had to quit working at like 7.5 months pregnant. No paid leave or anything.

The internet was made for fun by nerds. Then capitalists charged for access to it. History in a fortune cookie.
Public research and development grants and investment did it. Socialized investment made it and corporations control it and profit off it, unfortunately like most things in the world.
Honestly it was the Porn Industry that gave us the Internet in der way we know it today.
We still have to pay for the internet though. I do take issue with that. It should be free.
It is free. You're not charged for the content, unless a content creator out there wants to charge (their choice). What you pay for is access to the physical topology it sits on. As you should, because different telco and cable companies own and manage all those parts - it belongs to them. Building and scaling networking infrastructure isn’t cheap. Neither is maintaining a backbone or cable headend. Or employing technicians for end user support. The money for all this has to come from somewhere. Hope that helps :-)

The thing is, though, the types of socialism that people want aren't even the opposite of capitalism. With the type of mixed economy that exists now, it is actually possible for the system to become both more socialist and more capitalist at the same time.
Basically, capitalism is defined based on trade and industry, and while socialism is also often defined that way, many of the "socialist" ideas people have are not incompatible with a technically capitalist system.

In the 1950s—the decade commonly touted by conservatives as paradise—the top tax bracket in the US was 90%. We should return to that now.
Especially in the Golden/Silver age, Batman mostly fought villains who were, in essence - thieves. He was literally a psycho rich guy who beat the h3ll out of generally poorer criminals to protect the assets of other rich people.
How does that argument even make sense to anyone? At what yearly income would someone be demanded to pay 90% of it in taxes? Let's say the magic mark for 90% taxes is $1,000,000 per year or more and for each $100,000 less per year income tax is reduced by 10% and 20% is the lowest bracket. 1,000,000 = 90% = 100,000 net income 900,000 = 80% = 180,000 net income 800,000 = 70% = 240,000 net income 700,000 = 60% = 280,000 net income 600,000 = 50% = 300,000 net income 500,000 = 40% = 300,000 net income 400,000 = 30% = 280,000 net income 300,000 = 20% = 240,000 net income 200,000 = 20% = 160,000 net income 100,000 = 20% = 80,000 net income For anything above $500,000 per year what incentive is there for anyone to do better? They'd effectively be making the same or less money at more effort. Socialism creates that median point where it is useless for the individual to put in more effort for no additional return. No incentive = no ambition. No ambition = stagnant society.
How about we take 90% of your income too if that is the right thing to do

Communism is actually a good idea. Think of a utopia, in that utopia, everything is free and stuff and currency doesn't exist, right? That's communism. Communism hasn't worked before because of corrupt/horrible leaders. If there were no leaders and everything was shared between people, we would be as close to a utopia as possible.

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. The abuse of anything is not the same as the thing being utterly wrong. Capitalism does have valuable principles and we should be teaching young people to think, not just accept whatever's being spun on social media at the time. But American commoners are busy attacking each other instead of targeting rich people. So I guess their politicians have done a good job in controlling the masses, they know how to divide and conquer.
... the redhead in South Park delivers it every time ... "ThEy TaKiN oUr JoOoObS!" - no, they don't, they're not taking anything from you, from you is taken by the one percent owning like 99 %, who show off their stuff in order to prove how hard they have worked. There never was a billionaire by hard work - at least a lot of luck, a good idea and a fortune to get it started were around beforehand, and said billionaire had access to it. Bezos didn't start in a garage as you know a garage, he did start fairly well equipped with everything you need - and, admittedly, his idea was just the right thing at the right time. 10 years prior, the hardware capable of amazoning was too expensive for common people ... 10 years after, someone would have taken amazon's spot anyway ... or you're directed to your record collection and listen to Alvin, Leo, Joe, ...
Load More Replies...It's pretty odd that people in America have only two mindsets, Communism or Capitalism. You do know that you don't have to be far one side or the other... there is a middle ground. Its extremely clear that the rich there are far more important and the middle class do the crap work to make the rich even more wealthy. Then you have governments giving those richer people even more tax breaks... None of this makes sense to everyone looking in.
Yes, some of us do know, but we are outnumbered by the people who believe there are only evil Dems or evil Republicans, and overlook the fact all of them are being screwed over by the same 50 Big Corporations.

Load More Replies...What I don't get are the people actively campaigning against their own interests. I understand there are loads of propaganda shoved down their throats but do they actually take a minute to think "what's in it for me?" Healthcare for instance, unless you're immortal, you're going to need it. Why not make it free?
The comments on this post killed my brain cells (Looking at you, Damon). How idiots like that even figure out how to post a comment is beyond me.
Have you noticed that despite many wars, revolutions, new laws, advance in technology etc...society looks the same as it had in all of History? We still have the rich(noble) people with all the power over the little ones (peasants) who work for them to survive. It's not just America. Europe is just as bad.
Sadly, yes, no -ism or place has no problems. And, yes, even in Europe the big money talks. As do the big idiots. (UK, I'm looking at BoJo. You can't mock us for Trump without getting BoJokes.)

After the revolution, the country sold out to foreign investors PLUS is systematically controlled by a handful of politicians for gain.
