Nobody likes having nosy neighbors. Whether they feel the need to insert their opinion on your music taste, where you park your car or what flowers you plant in your garden, neighbors that don’t understand boundaries are never fun to deal with. So most of us, to the best of our abilities, bite our tongues and avert our eyes when we find a neighbor annoying. It just is not our place to intervene in their affairs, assuming there is no reason to be genuinely concerned about their safety.

One woman, however, recently made it clear on Reddit that she does not seem to understand that she can’t control her neighbors. Several weeks ago, this frustrated neighbor asked others online if she was wrong for calling the cops on the residents next door for how they choose to manage their dog. Readers had plenty to say about the situation, so below, you can read the full story, as well as some of the responses, and decide if you think this woman was in the wrong. Let us know your thoughts in the comments, and then if you’re interested in reading another Bored Panda story featuring neighbors from hell, check out this piece next.

One woman recently asked others online if she was wrong for calling the cops on the apartment next door

I understand wanting to feel as comfortable as possible in your place of residence, but especially when you live in an apartment building, you just cannot control your neighbors. Tensions often arise and disputes can be formed over the tiniest details when people live in close proximity, but the “issue” here does not seem to be a problem at all. The woman noted that the dog only began using these mats on the patio 2 months ago, and later, she explained that the woman next door is pregnant. It seems that this solution for the dog’s business is only a temporary one. Once the neighbor has given birth and is no longer on bed rest, the dog will probably be going on plenty of walks. But the larger issue is: this is none of the woman’s business in the first place.

The dog is not going to the bathroom on her patio, and the neighbors are cleaning up the messes twice a day. Unless this person is sitting by the window all day staring at her neighbor’s apartment, she could easily not even notice this. Her claims that the dog is not properly being taken care of or that this practice is unhygienic are just not substantiated. There are a few valid reasons to call the police on a neighbor, including excessive noise, domestic violence, child or animal abuse, having too many or illegal pets, or engaging in illegal drug activity. But being upset because your neighbor’s small dog is going to the bathroom on their patio? I would recommend taking a hot bath to calm down or going for a walk. No need to alert the authorities.

The comments on this post make it very clear how most people feel about the situation, but it’s unclear whether or not the OP has learned anything. If this causes her so much grief, maybe she should be searching for another apartment, rather than tormenting her innocent neighbors who have enough on their plates with a baby on the way. Let us know what you think down below, and if you have ever had to deal with an aggressively nosy neighbor, we would love to hear how you navigated the relationship.

Commenters seem to unanimously agree that the woman was wrong, with many of them telling her that she is the problem

Oh my god, this infuriates me. We have a rescue dog - she used to be a mill breeder. She's old, people shy, has very few teeth and weighs only a few pounds. She looks like a little raptor - you can see her spine, butt bones, etc. She looks horrible, and to an outsider they might think we abuse the dog. But we literally *saved* her from abuse and are rehabilitating her, feeding her and I've been slowly earning her trust. She will NOT go out on a leash. It causes her untold amounts of anxiety and I only use one to take her to the vet or grooming. She goes on pads inside the home because of this, and by god if she wants to do this until she dies I'll let her. There is such a thing as nueraldivergent and/or rehabilitating dogs.

So OP complained to the dog owners. YTA. I was literally in this situation a few months back. I was on bedrest and couldn’t take my dog out and he had to wait for my bf to get home from work and he worked long hours. Sometimes your just in a situation where everyone has to step up and deal with it for a few months. The dog was not being abused and was still being taken care of, just not the way you approved of. You don’t have a right to butt in peoples business and tell them how to do things. If anything instead of being an a*****e you could of knocked on their door and asked if they needed someone to take their dog out for them while the gf was on bedrest.

In my opinion, allowing a dog to relieve itself on a pee pee pad on a balcony is no different than owning a home and allowing the dog to go in the back yard to relieve itself. How does the dog get outside to use the pee pee pads? Someone has to open the door and let it out, right? Then it’s obviously being cared for. Definitely not a police matter! My own doggo is puppy pad trained for those times when we’re at our vacation house in the woods. We don’t have a fenced yard there and with the wildlife, it’s not safe to leave her on the deck. Plus, I’m not about to subject myself to a possible cougar attack by walking her in the forest at night. But she does get plenty of run time on the beach, during the day. At home, she walked twice a day (lunchtime and before bedtime). All other times, she’s let outside to go in the yard. She’s a super happy doggo!

Ah, yes, the assumption that if someone else does something different or not like you would do it, it's wrong, criminal, abusive, offensive, dangerous, and needs to be called out. Or, usually, it's another stunning case of MYOFB.

so your neighbours were taking proper care of their dog and walking it every day and they suddenly stopped. now the first thought was they out of the blue started abusing the dog while they never showed these tendencies before? my first thought would be the dog is probably sick or recovering from a surgery 🤷 and when they said their schedule changed and they are walking it at night why it wasnt enough? Honestly not an A for being concerned, there's way too many posts on AITA or WIBTA where someone is most likely neglecting the dog or where the owners have straight up admitted to neglecting the dog and op wants to know what they can do or if they should do something. Same thing on r/dogs. The only reason that op is an AH is because she called the cops when the neighbor had already told her that they walk the dog. Being concerned and asking about it doesn't make you an AH, calling the cops and causing someone the stress of that situation when they've already explained themselves does.

We once had a commercial. First there was a dog, taken out several times a day and then an elderly person in a wheel chair, sitting inside always, never getting some fresh air. Wonder if she calls the cops too if the kids don't visit and don't take grandpa out.

Probably not. A post like this gives people a place to vent frustrations at the people like this in their own lives, so it'll just rack up the karma. They want to believe it's real because it's cathartic. But someone who goes to the police the next day after being told there are reasons for the change and the dog still gets walked? That person doesn't post on AITA just because they found out what the reason was.

Perfect example of how some people have nothing better to do than waste valuable public resources on calls/investigations that are not emergencies and aren't even within the police purview to police! What did you expect, that the police would order them to walk the dog when you expected it to be walked, so you'd be aware of it?

OMG, I'm glad this woman isn't my neighbor. Our older pup, who we just lost this past June :( was an old dog. He couldn't go on long walks so it was either the patio or if he was feeling a bit perkier than normal we'd make the trek out back. We live in Florida and the heat is brutal, especially black top on small dogs tiny little feet, so neither dog gets walks during daylight hours for a good portion of the year. Walks happen well after sunset and in between, it's on the side of the house where there is some grass or the patio (also depends on weather, Yorkies are STUBBORN and they'll pee on your curtains before going into the rain so I'd rather the patio where they hug the overhang to stay dry). I can just hose that down. Curtains not so much

I have a neighbor with multiple dogs & cats. This is pretty much the same situation but without the pregnancy. The dogs are never walked & are rarely outside at all. I don't care how many animals they have or what types as long as they're taken care of but getting no exercise can't be good for the dogs. This is a friendly young couple who I've never had any problems with & haven't approached them about my issue with their dogs. I haven't called anyone to report my concerns but have considered it. Not the police but animal protection authorities. Would I be out of line for doing so? I have a dog of my own & he's walked every day, weather permitting & he's outside as often as he wants to go, not only because he has to. Again, my only concern is for the health of the dogs.

Yeah 20 bucks says this is a post made by the young couple who are angry at their situation because no one would ever be this blatantly transparent when asking if they are the AH. My guess is the young couple just want clarification from the internet that they are not crazy and this is wrong.

The Question: Am an AH for making a fuss over something without knowing the reality? YES you are a serious AH. Just wow. Did it ever occur to you to simply ask if there was anything you could do to help this couple? To walk the dog yourself? Nope. Instead, you immediately decided you knew the why of their action. Nope, you decided they were awful people who were lazy and inconsiderate and also bad dog owners. Wow again. I have always had a dog in my life. My new neighbors got their first dog a couple of months ago. They are nice people, but knew little about dogs at first. When I saw some problems developing, I went over and asked -- in a nice, non-judgmental manner - if there was anything I could help with. They were grateful and together we solved some of their problems. Now when they encounter problems with the dog, they call or come over and we discuss possible solutions. Best of all, we have become friends. This is how you ACTUALLY help. Try it!

Well I'm glad everyone now knows that she is a bïtch now. I mean she has to seriously have some mental issues because it's delusional to think you were in the right in any way, or this is just a complete bs post. I feel like making a reddit account just to rip this bïtch a new one to be honest. I had animal services called on me because someone said I was leaving my dogs outside all day long. I have an all season room/ sun room/enclosed patio(whatever you want to call it) that leads out back which I spend majority of my day hanging out in. I leave the door open, which has a mesh screen door (that like cheap bug door thing) so my dogs have the ability to come and go as they please. They love being outside and running around the yard or sunbathing and I check on them every 30 minutes (sometimes less because silence is suspicious). I was enfuriated. I have a securely fenced in yard and even keep the gate locked at all times so noone can go in from the front.

I'm pretty sure the neighbor who called was the bïtch that complained that my dogs make hers bark; lady every other house has barking dogs especially the ones to my left who have 4 loud yappers. My dogs don't bark that much to be singled out but I'm Hispanic and they do have a license plate that says speak English so I'm pretty sure it's a safe assumption. I've also lived in the neighborhood like 30 years longer than her with no neighbor issues ever. Ok I'm done ranting. Thank you. This post just set me off

The neighborly thing to do is talk to your GD neighbors and make sure they're okay, see if they need any help, and let them know you're there if they need anything. Not call the police on them for their dog using a pee pad on the patio. I bet she gives kids toothbrushes for Halloween too, huh?

NTA for showing concern for the welfare of an animal but this was a huge overreaction. I don't know what country the poster is from but in the Uk there are organisations which can be called to report concerns for animal welfare. I had to call about a neighbour's cat who had an obvious injury but didn't appear to have received treatment - someone went out to check and the matter was resolved, the neighbours were a little indignant that someone had reported it but i felt it was better to have trained professional ensure the cat's welfare and it got the treatment he needed so I'm not sorry for calling. If someone is concerned an animal is being abused or neglected then I don't think it's an AH move to check on their welfare but calling the police + continuing to pursue the issue after being told the animal is safe and well cared for is OTT.

I don't think that this woman was an a**hole. Maybe she could have found out the information without calling the police. But the reason she called was that she did suspect animal neglect or abuse. In a situation like that it is dangerous to confront one's neighbors. They can become belligerent or violent. Or they can even escalate their abusive treatment of the animal involved. Calling in the authorities is absolutely the safest and correct thing to do.

so your neighbours were taking proper care of their dog and walking it every day and they suddenly stopped. now the first thought was they out of the blue started abusing the dog while they never showed these tendencies before? my first thought would be the dog is probably sick or recovering from a surgery 🤷 and when they said their schedule changed and they are walking it at night why it wasnt enough?

I am always surprised at all the reasons the police will actually come in some countries. I can virtually hear our police department laughing at me if I tried to call in something like that.

One solution: OP could've offered to take the dog on more walks herself.

I didn't even know it was against the law not to walk your dog.

You could ask if they needed help with the dog instead of calling the cops.

Do you watch them 24 hours a day? I'm out with my dog 5am daily. I never see a soul. Let alone my neighbors. I work 8am-6pm and he gets a second walk around 11pm with my hubby or eldest son. Who in turn see very few to no humans. So maybe I never walk my dog! So yes very much the AH

LOL aside from the whole story, the fact that they're even wondering if they're the a*****e in this case tells you all you need to know about this person.

These AITA posts. Seeing more and more of them, and some appear to be creative writing more than anythig. I used to read another page which like BP had a lot of recycled Reddit items. It eventually evolved to almost nothing but AITA. Just gave up on it.

You think it is okay to stalk a neighbor enough to know exactly how many times they take their dog for a walk every day? I feel like you must ask to speak to a lot of managers.
