“It’s like a story written by the wind on the deep sea and you can read it when the swell arrives on the shore”.
Since he was a child Pierre Carreau is fascinated by the ocean. He loves playing with all water gear that allow him to enjoy the wind and waves. Naturally, his first photography projects were capturing action shots for surf or kitesurf magazines and water sport equipment manufacturers.
Pierre works intensively on his project « AquaViva » : a study of wave shapes. “It is all about energy transfer, I want to share what ocean gives to me”.
These images mix power and fragility. Like glass or metallic sculpture, they bring us momentary treasures created by nature.
Each wave is different and a single wave offers various beautiful shapes and light reflexion. However to get a good picture, the process is extensive. Pierre has to take hundreds of shots to really find the jewel he is searching for. In his words, « digital photography and the best camera/lens are absolutely necessary to create my images. Technology allows me to make it possible ».
Pierre has found small waves to be more interesting to him as they show details and transparency that are not visible on huge waves.
A perfect control of natural light is also important for the visual impact of his project. Pierre always says : « a photographer is literally someone who writes with light ».

Born in 1972 near Paris, I grew up surrounded by artistic influences. Perhaps in reaction to this subtle pressure, I chose initially to work a number of years in the IT industry. Then I returned to my roots and became a professional photographer. In 2004 I moved with my family to the Caribbean island of St. Barth. This small paradise has become my open-air studio.
