People Are Cracking Up At This Woman’s Conversation With A Client Demanding That She Create An Anti-Vax Door Sign

Interview With Artist
ADVERTISEMENT

Pushing away the tide of ignorance is something teachers have been doing ever since the dawn of time, but it’s not exclusive to teachers—every one of us is more or less responsible for ensuring that said ignorance doesn’t lead to bad things happening to good people.

And this one woman has been doing just that, albeit not necessarily through education as much as it was a clever clap-back at people perpetrating anti-vaccinationism. Is that a word? You get the point!

More Info: TikTok

Running a business is not easy as it is without clients submitting requests that clash with your morals

Meet Lexi, an arts and crafts guru from Knoxville, Tennessee who creates everything from pictures to doormats to witty signs. And quite recently she got a request from a client named Samantha to create a very particular custom sign.

In particular, it was supposed to be one of those round signs and it should have said “welcome unvacinated [sic!] and unafraid” using a “pretty” font to be hung on the customer’s front door by Thanksgiving.

Now, while there are surely people who would have just taken the order, performed it, and would’ve been on their way, Lexi was more conscious about serving such a client. After all, doing this would have meant supporting the anti-vax cause, and that’s something Lexi did not agree with.

You’d think a polite ‘no’ would suffice, but nope, the client just turned hella rude

“My initial reaction to the potential client’s request was, quite literally, an eye roll,” elaborated Lexi in an interview with Bored Panda. “I immediately knew I would not make the requested sign, so my next thoughts were related to determining how to best proceed in denying her request. “

So, after Lexi politely responded, Samantha seemed to have turned somewhat hostile and said she didn’t ask for Lexi’s opinion—“i just want you to do your job like im paying you for” [sic!] For the record, she hadn’t paid yet, but that’s beside the point.

But Lexi was having none of it and she ‘maliciously complied’ by actually creating a round door sign that said what Samantha wanted it to say… and then some.

So, as a response, Lexi ‘maliciously complied’ to the request and added a little bit more to it

And yes, she replied to the client, as you can see in the screenshot

“I have been very vocal in regards to the hope that the COVID vaccines bring us to help end this global pandemic and my support of them. After all, I am a mother to a special-needs child (4 years old and not yet of age to be vaccinated) that relies on in-person services and I have personally experienced loss from this deadly virus, as not long before I received Samantha’s request, my grandmother died from COVID,” elaborated Lexi.

She continued: “I had been mostly silent within my business on my standpoint, but this request gave me the push I may have needed to make my stance known. I felt my initial response to her was direct and finite, so I was honestly surprised to hear back from her at all. Though this was the first request I had received to make a sign promoting anti-vaccination, this was not the first time that I have been treated poorly by a potential client. So, when she responded to my refusal in the manner in which she did, I felt I needed to be more clear in how I prefer to conduct business, which is simply making products that adhere to my ethical standards and working with clients that share a mutual respect for the process and everyone involved.”

Overall, people online have been supportive of Lexi, despite there being some hate

So, the sign ended up saying “Welcome. We are unvac[c]inated and unafraid.” with a little asterisk at the end clarifying “and uneducated.” The design was soon slapped onto the reply message on GMail and sent to Samantha.

And, to add insult to injury, this move ended up very beneficial for Lexi’s crafts business as seen in this video where online shop purchases kept coming and coming.

“Overall, my decision to publicize the interaction on TikTok has been one of the best business decisions I have ever made,” elaborated Lexi. “Though I have received a fair amount of nasty and threatening messages and emails, I have received far more messages of support and I have so many new clients that have brought meaning into my work that I didn’t even know was missing.”

Unfortunately, the insults didn’t stop there as Lexi got a couple more letters, one from someone who’s unvaccinated, but educated, saying “your an idiot,” to which Lexi responded with “*you’re”, and another one here claiming the vaccine is not fully tested. We’ll just stop there. But these few drops of hate were nothing compared to the sea of support Lexi got from TikTok.

“I wasn’t very surprised at the amount of views the video generated [352k as of this article], as vaccination standpoints are often a trending topic on TikTok. I was, however, incredibly surprised by the response to the video, from both sides,” explained Lexi.

Needless to say, the business was booming afterwards and Lexi was greeted with an inbox full of requests after this little clap-back

“Most surprising was the amount of people that had taken time from their day to stop what they were doing to send me an email or message to express their support and share their stories and simply spread their kindness. In the beginning, it was quite overwhelming, as I had never received so many emails and orders at one time before. I struggled to prioritize and respond to everyone but, once I laid out a clear path forward, I’ve managed quite well and have enjoyed the new opportunities and learning experiences this has offered me.”

You can check out the video and read the comments here, and you can also check out Lexi’s store, where she has all of the ‘no to anti-vax’ designs on sale. But before you run off to the other side of the internet, tell us your thoughts on this in the comment section below!

I actually think it’s really important for uneducated, selfish, and generally offensive anti vaxers to be reminded that they bear no relevance whatsoever in a caring, educated society.

Well Lis, you are a pretty gigantic idiot. Who are you to judge that every single person follow protocol that you swallowed when they have personally not? I did get the vax, moderna, but people like you who think everyone has to think like you, they have to weigh the info and MUST come to YOUR conclusion are everything that regular non self aggrandizing people hate. You suck. You could be wrong and you. are. an. idiot. And everything that is wrong with this country.

These people are just a study in contradiction. I want to tell you all about how bad vaccines are but I do not want to hear about how safe they are. I want body autonomy but definitely will tell a pregnant woman what to do with hers. It must be exhausting to be them.

Completely. My favourite contradiction...’we are unafraid....oh, except for vaccines, science, 5G, anything non binary, history, microchips, liberalism, having my gun taken away, body autonomy, universal healthcare......’

The ironic thing is that these people who are unvaccinated and screaming about their rights and how they're being persecuted are the same people who refuse to make a wedding cake for a gay couple or support anything outside of "normal" because "it's against their beliefs and morals." But if they're denied services because it's against our beliefs, God forbid!!

Republicans: "You can't force me to get vaccinated!" Also Republicans: "Women must be forced to give birth if pregnant, no exceptions, not even for rape, incest, or the health of the woman." Y'all can't have it both ways. And pregnancy isn't contagious.

Jessicamorganmaloney, she DID say no, and tried to leave it like that. But the customer came back at her, and insisted. So, she got what she came for. A sign. A very good, well thought out sign. Good for her.

The one comment said exactly what I was thinking - all the people who say they’re “unafraid” are too scared to get a vaccine. It’s well within her rights to refuse business from someone if she’s not comfortable with the request. Like if someone asked for a custom sign that alluded to having sex with dogs, it would definitely be allowed for her to say “no way, that’s illegal and unfair to dogs” and I bet those people in the comments wouldn’t be all “um that person didn’t ask for your opinion, you should do something else to make money if you aren’t going to agree to every request” with that one.

Not disagreeing with you, but you have to use a comparison that is actually *able* to be compared. Like, someone saying they want to have sex with dogs is no where near in comparison to someone saying they don't like/support vaccines. it's like comparing murder and spitting on someone. They have varying levels of severity.

Response to people feel it’s their choice not to be vaccinated. You’re correct… you have the right to choose either way. What upsets me is when some who is eligible but refuses to get vaccinated so often they don’t understand or care about how their choice effects others. If you want to jump off the roof of an 80 floor sky scraper feel free…. just don’t do it while holding onto my 78 yr old mother who has cancer & take her with you. Not only is she high risk of getting Covid because of her chemo treatments, she medically is not allowed to get the vaccine. What you do does effect others. The problem I’m running into is that the majority of non-vaccinated people are also UNWILLING to wear a mask & social distance. (Side) note also getting tired of the unvaccinated Christians telling me God will protect them… he did - it’s the vaccine 🙄

At least the anti-vax individuals want to proclaim their status and shout it out, I guess. It lets the rest of us know to stay the hell away. However, anger got the best of the artisan. She could have just refused OR made the sign with a note explaining she did not agree. That may have made a difference somehow. Name calling doesn’t help anyone see more clearly, it instead pushes them into a more defensive posture. That definitely doesn’t help the health crisis. Miseducated is a better expression than uneducated...more accurate description. (I’m pro-vax by the way. Just think a different approach may be better. No one benefits from hateful rhetoric.)

Ah, so if someone asked if they can make a sign about the protocols of the elders of zion, they're also just miseducated, and need to be treated kindly so they can understand that anti-semitism isn't cool? Antivaxxers are complicit in nothing less than genocide. 720 000 deaths in USA lies squarely at the doors of the antivaxxers, starting with the orange sh1tgibbon.

OK so to summarise for those antivaxxers who somehow managed to stray onto BP instead of DerStürmer or whatever rag they normally read: Choosing to not be vaccinated affects others. Spreading fake news affects others. 720 000 deaths in usa can be attributed to fools believing fake news and not taking scientific precautions. HOWEVER, being gay and not having a cake made on those grounds is like refusing to make cakes for black people or for jews. It's straightforward discrimination or racism. Being gay is neither a choice nor is it an infectious disease that causes deaths. There is a BIG difference here. As mentioned above, if someone asks for a cake with a swastika, or a poster with a swastika, you are entitled to refuse because it is simply hate speech, racism, and harmful to others (as we can see from the holocaust).

I'm going to say that while it's not as common as many would claim my mother got the J&J shot due to the mandate and has had several problems that are known reactions to the shot. The vaccines were rushed when compared with normal medical approval processes. Further, those already ill with other infections are at increased risk. My doctor and I discussed the shot and given my normal reactions to vaccines we determined that I should self quarantine as much as possible and not get the shot as there was a considerable risk of the vaccine side effects killing me. The vaccines are safe for most people but not all. Those with rapid heart rate or high clotting factor are suggested to not get the shot. I'm not opposed to the vaccine, I'm opposed to it being forced on my family and myself when it could legitimately kill us. Further, the vaccines are not as effective as originally touted or it wouldn't be strongly suggested to get a booster just six months later.

dude the base rate of natural clot deaths is higher than the vaccine-induced clot rate death. In other words, according to the stats I saw in EU, the vaccine is associated with LOWER clot deaths than usual.

I can see it as a concern for a business to take on a polarizing project that could potentially be seen as a reflection of the creator's opinion. A simple decline on the request for all political and Covid related subjects would have been more appropriate than making something in disdain. The customer really didn't insult Lexi or push her views. She just simply made a request for it to be made. Lexi's reply, no matter which side you lean, is off-putting and I don't blame the customer for feeling offended. Whatever wars the customer was creating is her issue not Lexi's and Lexi shouldn't have taken it personally. Just laugh it off or refuse. I wouldn't want to buy anything from her now.

are you quite insane? She is refusing to make a thing that promotes fake news that causes DEATH. Mass death, to be precise. That is quite different to the cake issue. The customer should be offended and should be informed that their view is harmful. If someone asked Lexi for a sign with a swastika on it, she would also be justified in refusing, instead of saying "oh oops best I do not offend you and best I get on with making your pro-genocide signage".

This isn't politics or science, it's business. Either you take the job or not, your choice, but you shouldn't use a business request to boost your profile on social media. Although I agree with your stance and I am fully vaccinated I would put you and your company in the same pot at those that refuse to make wedding cakes for gay couples. And on top of that prodding her to respond and then doing the "baaa" thing was just immature. You wouldn't have done that if it were just you and her talking to each other, you did it to show off on the internet. I'm really getting tired of people acting like if "those people" think differently than me than I can dog them and call them inappropriate, unprofessional things and it's OK. But, if they do the exact same thing to you than they're scum who deserve to be shamed (while boosting your likes and profile). Honestly, you're all insecure, needy, and just plain thirsty.

Remember when liberals were angry over conservatives refusing business to gay couples over wedding cakes? The couples were lauded as heroes for demanding their rights...🤔 No one was supposed to be supporting anything, it was just business, right?.This "customer" has rights too. Please tell me how a vaccine that was literally created last year can be thoroughly tested... when we are only now seeing the results of the "thoroughly tested" vaccines that have been pushed on us for 3 generations ... If you do not want to make a sign whatever... but do not assume you are intelligent about vaccines because the news and society has told you they are good. These are the same people who poison your food and water....real class acts to listen to..huh. If vaccination was so Necessary for quality life, humans would have become extinct in the first few generations... I trust i was created with exactly what i need and the earth provides the rest.

I completely agree with Lexi about being vaccinated... but why did she feel it necessary to explain anything? "I can't do the job", or even a simple "No", is enough. If the would-be customer had replied wanting a reason, then she would have been justified with that reply. I'm sensing some passive/aggressive attitude mixed with a bit of moral superiority (arrogance). Lexi's reply was bound to generate further interaction.

I like how everyone here is making broad assumptions on both sides. Someone who was "informed" of the vaccines risks and still ELECTED to take the vaccine than it was the right decision for them to make and that holds true for an unvaccinated person. A person who elects to not be vaccinated isn't always uneducated, there are multiple studies and countries that have proven vaccines weren't the end all solution. Medical studies over decades on what the actual causes are that spreads a disease. If either side did more research than the headlines and news updates; you would see how the much contradiction there is in it. Guess what? That is science! For ex. Claiming the vaccine lays eggs in you is incorrect. Claiming that the evidence is clear vaccine is the right thing for everyone is also not true. 17,000 people are now dead and 200,000+ and growing of people with long-term side affects. Transparency is the ask but FDA just asked for 55yrs but only needed 108 days to bring it to market.

I'm so sorry that you got downvoted, I can completely understand and fully support what you are saying. There are risks to the vaccine just as there are risks to COVID-19, and it's someone's personal decision to decided whether they want to take it or not. However, those refusing it based on conspiracy theories, rather than actually research, should seriously rethink their reasoning.

If we remove the whole vaccination thing from this argument, the designer was incredibly unprofessional. How is this any different from refusing to bake a gay couple a wedding cake? You sell cakes, keep your stupid opinions to yourself or close your business. You're here to make money, not friends. Stop bringing your personal opinions into business and just sell your damn products. You going to police every idiot with an opinion? Cus you'll be here until the end of time. A proper response when refusing the order would be to lie and say you're backed up right now on orders and can't make their request, but best of luck with their search. Learn some damn professionalism. Ever heard of not sinking to their level?

Other side of the coin: When you operate a business, you never know the people you are selling to unless they do what this potential buyer did. The seller should have just said that she was unable to provide that type of service and left it at that. It's tough being in business if you are going to put your own personal beliefs into it. Just like THE DIVINEMSM stated about a wedding cake for the gay couple. You don't bring in your personal beliefs into your business. It's a business..as long as the potential buyer isn't harming anyone. The gal that wanted the moronic sign probably has friends and family who feel the same but she may open herself up for a huge egging.

Yes they do. I provide remodeling services but I’m not going to have my crews paint swastikas all over someone’s home even if they pay me to do it. We own our companies, not the other way around. Peasants shouldn’t assume they have control over things we built. And it’s “your” not “you’re.”
