This Fast-Food Restaurant Reignites Hiring Debate After This Woman Reveals That They Pay Their Workers $20 Per Hour

Talks about work and salary can be a very delicate ones. But having in mind the problems that the employment industry faces, it becomes something worth discussing. A recent debate was started by TikTok user @missadriennek after she posted a video revealing the working conditions at Dick’s Drive-In.

In her video, the woman shows one of Dick’s fast-food restaurants located in Kent, Washington. The TikToker explained that there are 15 workers in total, making the restaurant fully staffed, as well as pointing out that these workers earn $20 an hour. The video and her comments soon started a heated discussion online about work wages and labor shortage.

More Info: TikTok

Labor shortage is known to be one of the most serious problems in the employment industry

The TikTok video that now has almost 775k views shows the woman in one of Dick’s fast-food restaurants. She had already received her order and was looking around and showing how the restaurant was operating. The TikToker commented on her order that consisted of two cheeseburgers, a Deluxe cheeseburger, two orders of fries, a milkshake, and a float, all for $20. She also noted how short the lines were because the restaurant was fully staffed and ready to take take care of people’s orders.

A TikTok user decided to share how one fast-food chain tackles this problem by paying their workers $20 per hour

By giving more information about Dick’s working conditions, the woman addressed two closely related problems that the employment industry faces, those being labor shortage and low minimum wage. It is known that this particular fast-food restaurant pays one of the highest wages in the fast-food industry. To compare, the minimum wage in the United States is $7.25 per hour. The minimum wage in Washington is $13.69, according to Statista.

The woman shared what she received from the restaurant as well as pointing out that the place is fully staffed

Being able to pay more than the minimum wage sounds like a good thing, but a lot of people in the comments were thinking otherwise. Some of them thought that this would lead to increasing the prices of the food, so this is why the creator of the video showed what she was able to get for $20. The restaurant and its president Jasmine Donovan shared a letter where she explained the logic behind all the benefits they are providing to their employees. It is also known that for this to work, the restaurant had to increase their prices by 5 to 25 cents.

While some TikTok users pointed out that there is no labor shortage but rather “a cheap labor shortage,” there were people who couldn’t understand why this type of job requires paying a pretty solid wage. They were soon shut down by people who understand how hard this job actually is and that everyone’s time matters, so this is why they should get reasonable pay for this.
What do you think about this situation? Don’t forget to leave your thoughts in the comments down below!

The arguments to keep people from earning a livable wage are pathetic. Only in the US people are obsessed with what other people that they don't even know, earn. If someone can make $20 per hour flipping burgers and you make $19 per hour with your college degree, you shouldn't be angry at the burger guy making more than you. You should be angry at the employer paying you less than him.

totally agreed. Though i don‘t think this is an US only problem. I‘m happy for everyone, who makes 20$ per hour. Great for them!

Demanding others to get paid less is a way to feel superior. Had a collegue (mate would be too strong a word) in high school who always took this approach: when his grades were not as expected, he did not complain about his grades, but demanded others to be graded worse in comparison. Most teachers gave in and changed his grades to the better to avoid having to demote the others. As you can imagine, this collegue was universally liked...

This idea that it shouldn't pay more because it was "meant for a 16 year-old, not a career" just disgust me. If you work full-time, you should be able to afford a modest one bedroom apartment, utilities, and food. Work is work, stop degrading it. You degrade and devalue the person's time spent making food for you, and then wonder why they don't want to make food for you.

It also assumes every 16 year old is living some sort of charmed and pampered life. Considering half the kids in high school I knew back then didn’t even live at home for a whole host of reasons thinking teens don’t need a living wage is some frou frou bourgeoisie nonsense.

The reasons for the US labor shortage are many. A large percentage of older workers retired early during the pandemic. Child care disappeared, so somebody had to stay home. Jobs don’t offer benefits, which is what employees need, especially health care. Jobs don’t offer full-time hours, so you can’t pay your bills. Jobs don’t offer flexible hours for personal needs, like doctor appointments. The pandemic unemployment payments ended quite a while ago. Many customer-facing jobs are just too stressful and abusive to make the effort worthwhile for a lot of people. Etc., etc.

These jobs aren't easy. They are incredibly stressful. Additionally, if these workers are kids in school, then they DEFINITELY should be getting a living wage because college is EXPENSIVE. I had to pay for tuition plus food and housing. I couldn't find an employer willing to hire an undergrad FT, so instead I worked 3 PT jobs aside from my classes to afford university. It would have been great if I could have found this job and only worked the one job as a student. My grades would have been better and I wouldn't have slept through class. Or on the road between commutes...

Who said the kid is going to college? That's a choice. She may also be financing a BMW at $800/month. That's also a choice. I have a choice too, and if a burger cost the same as a steak at another restaurant I will choose the steak.

People don't seem to understand that when the minimum wage was implemented, it was the equivalent of $24 / hour now. I have a Master's and my equivalent salary was equal to what minimum wage used to be. Businesses did just fine then and they can do so now. The living and working conditions that this country has accepted are abysmal.

i have a family member who insists ppl aren't working low wage jobs because they are getting 'free' money via unemployment, stimulus, etc. when i point out that there has been no stimulus & pandemic unemployment benefit program has ended then he says higher wages causing increased prices. well, kind of because wage/profit has to balance. finally was able to get him to understand that many who used to work low wage did things during lockdown that made them realize their own worth such as starting own business, online classes, & just the ability to be able to job search for better paying jobs when lockdown ended as you can't afford to take days off to look for new job. those fast food jobs at the old min. wage was fine for high schools students for extra cash but no one could afford to live off those wages without having to consider applying for supportive programs such as snap. now that ppl have realized their worth they need to push for form of universal healthcare as that is a right.

I hate the argument that "it's a 16 year old first job" who do they think is training those 16 year old? You really want to leave a food business entirely to teenagers? No? Then pay the adults who work there a living wage. And some 16 year olds are saving for college, to move out, for a car, paying their own cell bill or gas money. Why shouldn't 16 year olds be paid the same as an adult?

I heard someone saying: “Nobody wanted to work to begin with, that’s the point of paying us. We’ve just become more expensive. If you can’t afford us, tough s**t”. Nobody dreams of career in fast dining, so don’t be shocked you have to incentivize people somehow to work for you.

This is how capitalism works, people. If you offer to buy something and people say no - for WHATEVER reason - you raise the price till they say yes. Does not matter if the government is preventing people from starving to death by giving away barely enough food to live on, or if they are paying unemployed people huge salaries to not work. Still have to raise your offer, either way. Trying to get the government to change it's policies to help your business is never the right move, even if the government is wrong. You are competing with the other businesses and the best businesses will always survive and the worst ones will always die.

The stupidest thing is the naysayers at the end "Don't they realise that the Spady family is one of the richest?" --- what's the argument, you think they lose money on the restaurant and have it open just as a hobby?! No, they've paid well above norm for 2 generations and have grown rich of that... And "$20 an hour but for how many hours, maybe just 30h/week?" --- so they'd earn a normal wage and still have 20h in their week left to spend on themselves/kids/house... And there were 15 staff around when filming, surely some are fulltime some are halftime.

Complaining about a wage that renders the restaurants fully functional (as opposed to lower paying ones) is anti-capitalist and anti-free market. If your intention is to tell the restaurant that they should define the wage based on some agenda and pay lower, you're a communist and Un-American, shame on you! ;)

The idea that a fast food place is for skill-less teenagers making pocket money rests on three outdated concepts: 1) the job market is open enough that teens are the only workers available for menial work, 2) those teenagers are doing this work for extra pocket money and not as a supplemental or primary breadwinner, 3) the business staffs well enough that "unreliable" teens are not necessary for the business to function, just as backup help cleaning/waiting/etc.

My issue is with other people who say that noone should expect to work at fast food as a career and be able to live on the wages. If in America you work a full time job it should be able to pay for rent or a mortgage, food, and your Bill's. Some people cant just get a better job or are college material. I mean just for instance (and in no way am I saying all fast food workers are mentally impaired) say you arent very smart. You do well at mcdonalds flipping the burgers and are great at your job. You arent interested in going to college. Just because you arent as smart as another person does that mean you cant have a place to Iive, food to eat, A phone to use, etc. Does someone who has a higher IQ deserve to eat and others do not? The fact that we have to argue this point,is just sad.

This extends to regular sit down restaurants like Montana Mike's (Texas) and say Red Lobster. They wouldn't have to lean on you for tips if they paid reasonable wages. I remember working at one of this nations Then best haute Cuisine restaurants in L.A. while stationed in Long Beach. I worked the Evening shift four days a week. $4.45 an hour plus tips. Of course my tips (shared) yes Shared made it worth it, it still was demeaning. That I had to hope my tips would help me pay the rent on an apartment off base for my family because base housing was full(What hadn't been condemned!) Turns out thanks to Folks from Hollywood looking for a private place to eat with close friends and family away from the then press netted me usually $200.00 a nite after sharing! A Good BUS team was worth the sharing. Those two never let me look bad. So I shared well!

You shouldn't make $16 an hour and a job that is made for the younger people? Seriously? As if those people being young shouldn't be able to live and have what they need as well. It's insane that human beings don't see how awful they are. No one's talking about a life of luxury. Just for people to work and earn enough to be able to have our basic needs met. But I guess a lot of people don't think we should have that. A 16 year old deserves to live and eat too. We all deserve to be able to make it through the next day, week, month, and year. People are so worried that another human being is going to get more money than them. When in reality it's just people wanting to eat, have shelter, water, and be healthy. But money is a tool to get the things we all need to literally stay alive. And knowing that anyone out here doesn't want another human being to eat drink have shelter and be healthy it's just sad. Because that's basically what you're against, not wanting people to have food water shelter and healthcare. It's not the money you are denying people it's sustenance. Well you're denying people the money too but it's the natural resources we all need to live and thrive, not the money. How can you be upset that a person wants food, water, shelter and healthcare? Because that's what they want and need to survive. The money is a means to that end and you want people to starve, be homeless, and unhealthy and that's so wrong. Yet people don't even see it.

The fast food industry is a terrible spiral. In North America people are addicted to fast and cheap food. Many people do not even make their own morning coffee, they buy it. It has created a lot of jobs but all crappy ones. Some fast food restaurant owners are rich but many are only rich if they own multiple franchises. People want a society with better jobs but don't want to pay more for their fast food or cut back. When our governments look and jobs created and unemployment rates they don't look at wages. I

In South Africa, when the companies don't rob you, our minimum wage, for factory workers, fast food staff etc. is R20 p/h. With that we can buy a loaf of bread and possible a few sweets. Our work weeks are between 40 to 45 hours a week. So, if you are working a full week, you come out with a princely sum of between R800 to R900, less 1% for unemployment insurance fund. Yes, we value the minimum wage.

The biggest problem with this whole argument is what a person needs on the West Coast or a major city, to live is not what a person in middle America or the Southern states needs to live. The cost of living in an area should dictate the wages, but the cost of living on the West Coast and major cities is 20x that of the average place in the US. You can't base the wages on the highest cost of living areas for the entire country. Problem is when you do base it off the cost of the highest area for the country you raise the cost of living across the US as a whole. It is what has happened every time wages have gone up, the cost of living goes up to match it. We have hundreds of years of data showing that is the case if you take the time to look. Maybe just maybe the major cities need to look at what they are charging for things and realize that it is unsustainable to keep raising the prices. Example a house with materials cost of 100k total to build should not be worth 2 million.
