Today’s story is about how love, despite the sacrifices, can overcome any obstacle. But let’s roll it back a little. Bryson Kliemann is an 8-year-old from Lebanon, Virginia, who just loves everything related to Pokemon. He watches Pokemon religiously, has tons of Pokemon merchandise, and, of course, a huge collection of Pokemon cards. It would take a lot for him to sacrifice any of it, but he actually did, and here’s how and why.

Besides Pokemon, Bryson enjoys the company of his 4-month-old lab mix puppy named Bruce. Bryson has a younger brother and sister too, but since they both play together all the time, Bryson mostly spends all of this time with his best buddy Bruce. Though Bruce loves playing with Bryson all the time, one day he just lost all of his energy and became lethargic. The family noticed that he refused to eat and come out of his kennel; there was a feeling that something was wrong.

They took Bruce to the vet and found out that he was sick with parvovirus, which is deadly if left untreated. Naturally, they wanted to treat him, but after the vet explained that it would cost $700, they realized that they simply couldn’t afford it. But Bryson just didn’t want to let his best friend down, so he came up with a brilliant idea.

Bryson decided to sell his most prized possession, his Pokemon card collection, on the driveway. He raised 65 dollars the first day

Remember those Pokemon cards that we’ve mentioned before? Well, since the cards were Bryson’s most valuable possession, he decided to sell them to raise enough money for the expensive treatment. He wasted no time, picked up his collection, and made a stand near the driveway with a sign “Pokemon 4 sale.” He raised 65 dollars on his first day and kept going.

The word took to the streets, and the money kept pouring in. His mother, Kimberly, created a gofundme page to raise even more money

His mother, Kimberly Woodruff, wanted to help his noble cause, so she set up a gofundme page and started a little fundraiser with a modest $800 goal. Soon the word took to the streets, and the people started giving them more and more money. Bryson made $400 just from selling cards! The story picked up on the local news, and the boy’s efforts moved people to action; the gofundme page started bursting with donations.

They’ve managed to raise $15,000 out of the $800 goal

As they waited, the donations kept trickling in. First, there was a thousand, then seven, and it went up to whopping $15,000. Needless to say, the fundraiser went above and beyond the family’s expectations.

Days went by, and Bruce was ready to get checked out. And soon came the day when Bryson could finally take his beloved friend home. His smile went from ear to ear, and he was glowing. Bruce happily wagged his tail too, showing that he was as happy to see the kid as the kid was happy to see him.

Puppies can only get vaccinated for parvovirus at a certain age (around 6-12 weeks, I believe), and this dog here seems pretty young. However, before then, it's inadvisable to take your pup outside at all, it's recommended to keep your floors clean inside your house, etc, so, there's a lot of precautions that need to be taken. Parvo is highly contagious and really easy to catch, and even if vaccinated, there's still a chance that any dog can get the virus. Not to mention how crazy deadly it is. So, lara, please don't post comments like this that ruin the whole point of this story, that this wonderful boy was willing to sacrifice something that was so important to him for his puppy (although, it does disappoint me that healthcare has to be so expensive these days, it disgusts me).

Wonder kid, awesome outcome. But it's never wrong to try to get this simple idea across, Vaccinate your puppies but keep them safe until then. Parvovirus can be brought into your dog's environment (on your shoes). Start vaccines asap and keep them current.

And insure them too. You can insure from day 1. All my cats are insured and it's costs me £16 in total a month which is fine but if one ever gets ill or injured I only need to pay the first £75 (which I have always set aside in an account ready) and the rest is taken care of. If you can't afford insurance you can't afford a pet.

This may not be popular opinion but owning a dog is like having a child. No offense to parents out there. Not comparing your children to dogs but you have insurance for your child, why not your dog?! It's heartbreaking that this sweet boy has to sell his prized procession to help his best friend. If you don't want to get pet insurance, then have a savings for your dog. It deserves that much. This is from a dog owner who did just that. I'm having her teeth clean and it's going to run me close to $1000.00 and yup, she has an account all her own. I realize that not everyone can afford that but then you can't afford to have a dog. PLEASE. Understand, they are living, breathing creatures who do get sick.

Sorry the parents piss me off! My rule is, if you can't afford the insurance, you can afford the pet. Sometime the insurance doesn't cover the pet (Eg, my miniature donkeys cost around 3-5k each, max insurance cover... 2K) but you have to do have a contingency of some sort. When your kid resorts to trying to sell a beloved collection, you should stop that from happening, tell your kid, 'Great attitude, but we'll take care of it', sell you fecking car, sell your jewellery! Do not expect a child to have to provide. I would sell my own kidneys to save my dogs, but I don't have to because I have insurance!

I both love and hate this story. I'm impressed by what the kid did but he shouldn't have had to do it. There had to be a better way to save the dog then the kid having to sell his expensive cards that probably took him a long time to get. This story is sad and leaves me feeling upset. At least the dog was okay in the end though.

Sigh. I'm glad the dog got help but at the same time, I can't help but think that if the family is in a financially tight situation, they shouldn't have dogs. Relatively low maintenance pets like rats or maybe even cats? Ok. But dogs? From vaccinating, food, regular vet visits, grooming, etc, not everyone can 'afford' to keep dogs.

To everyone complaining about the cost of vet care - please stop. Vets have some of the highest suicide rates worldwide and they don't need people invalidating their jobs, their passion and their livelihoods. Their $ rates are minuscule if you compare them to private or non-insured human health care. Overheads are huge. Staff aren't paid well at all. They can't do it for free, otherwise they wouldn't be able to afford to stay open/pay staff. Owning a pet is a privilege and a choice, not a right.

Been there , done that! I have saved my rescued cat (mom got hit by a car and left two kittens behind. Too young to be vaccinated at that time)when the doctors said no way he is getting well. I fought against their decision and now, my cat is five years old, thriving at 18 lbs! It was painful and expensive, it worth it, but @aroace tiger I agree with you! Why?

My Chewbacca fell sick soon after we got him shortly after his weening in 2006. He was taken to two different dog hospitals. He was saved by Lake Arrowhead Animal Hospital. They kept him on IV fluids for days and only charged our young family less than half what it should have been. Last month that same hospital got our almost 15 year old dog and diagnosed him with cancer. They also gave this courageous member of our family a peaceful death after he was ravaged with cancer. I will never regret having him in our lives and I will always love the animal hospital that adopted him ads their "Parvo Puppy" when we got him. He ha this deadly disease when we got him. Don't pretend to know when this poor puppy grew ill.

When I was a kid vets I knew practiced for the love of it, but they barely could afford to live. Now prices are a bit higher, but there are better treatments and technologies available. This is what money brings. I know there are people who want everything to be free, but it can’t be.

If you can't take your animal to the vet, you shouldn't have any pets. Yes, vets are expensive but that's because their time, the medicine, and the machines are expensive. I have pet rats. Great little animals but the females are prone to tumors. It costs about $450 to have the tumor removed by a good vet. Blue got 2 tumors in her lifespan, $900. I had Cricket spayed (to help prevent tumors and so she can live with boys): $400. So, yes, it's expensive but you should figure out beforehand if you can afford to give them the treatment they need and if you can't, get a plant instead.

OK, the treatment IS NOT A SHOT. Treatment is the dog in the hospital, under 24 hour care, round the clock IV's supplemental injections, food, etc. I had a pup who had parvo when I adopted him. He was six weeks old and the assholes who ran the shelter neutered him. He got parvo and had NO CHANCE. I took him and he was at the vet quarantine hospital for seven days getting round the clock treatment and he still died, he was only SEVEN WEEKS OLD. And my heart is still broken.

My Chewbacca fell sick soon after we got him shortly after his weening in 2006. He was taken to two different dog hospitals. He was saved by Lake Arrowhead Animal Hospital. They kept him on IV fluids for days and only charged our young family less than half what it should have been. Last month that same hospital got our almost 15 year old dog and diagnosed him with cancer. They also gave this courageous member of our family a peaceful death after he was ravaged with cancer. I will never regret having him in our lives and I will always love the animal hospital that adopted him ads their "Parvo Puppy" when we got him. He ha this deadly disease when we got him. Don't pretend to know when this poor puppy grew ill.

When I was a kid vets I knew practiced for the love of it, but they barely could afford to live. Now prices are a bit higher, but there are better treatments and technologies available. This is what money brings. I know there are people who want everything to be free, but it can’t be.

If you can't take your animal to the vet, you shouldn't have any pets. Yes, vets are expensive but that's because their time, the medicine, and the machines are expensive. I have pet rats. Great little animals but the females are prone to tumors. It costs about $450 to have the tumor removed by a good vet. Blue got 2 tumors in her lifespan, $900. I had Cricket spayed (to help prevent tumors and so she can live with boys): $400. So, yes, it's expensive but you should figure out beforehand if you can afford to give them the treatment they need and if you can't, get a plant instead.

The treatment price is very high. Hopefully it can be lowered in the future. I'm very happy for him though.

OK, the treatment IS NOT A SHOT. Treatment is the dog in the hospital, under 24 hour care, round the clock IV's supplemental injections, food, etc. I had a pup who had parvo when I adopted him. He was six weeks old and the assholes who ran the shelter neutered him. He got parvo and had NO CHANCE. I took him and he was at the vet quarantine hospital for seven days getting round the clock treatment and he still died, he was only SEVEN WEEKS OLD. And my heart is still broken.
