Dog Kept On Such A Short Chain She Could Never Rest Her Head Is Finally Rescued And The After Pics Will Bring You Joy

Many people out there treat their dogs like their children, but then there are others, who subjugate these sweet creatures to extremely inhumane conditions. Cala, the guard-dog of a mechanic in San Jose, Costa Rica, was one of those unfortunate pups. Her owner kept her chained up on a chain so short that she had no way of resting her head and could barely breathe. When she was sick the owner wouldn’t take her to the vet and rarely fed her. Fortunately for Cala, her suffering had a positive end.

Concerned neighbors saw the conditions her owner had kept her in for years and reported them to the police as well as the animal shelter Territorio de Zaguates. When she was finally rescued, Cala had to be treated for emaciation, wounds, and malnutrition.

Lya Battle, the founder of Territorio de Zaguates, told the Dodo, “The picture I first saw of her showed a pitiful creature robbed of its dignity and ready to give up — a dog whose spirit had been broken and was just waiting for the end to come while living a never-ending nightmare.” She described the healing process as a slow one, “the humans around her still had to cause her pain through the curing of her wounds, especially the gash in her neck caused by years of hanging from a tight metal chain around her neck,”

Even after her resue Cala would come to endure more abuse at the hands of humans. In June, people snuck into the sanctuary in an attempt to kill some of the dogs with poison sausages. While 16 of the dogs died, this tenacious pup survived. Battle said this was probably in part due to her size and although she suffered some neurological problems Cala’s health returned.

Today Cala is living with a host family and has learned to get along with new humans and dogs alike. “After years of neglect, torture, and imprisonment, Cala seems to be getting all the puppy misbehaving process out of her system and we all think that’s just fine. She is happy, strong, willful, a bit stubborn, and spoiled by her foster mom and family,” said Battle, adding, “This rescue is an epic battle of good against bad and of hate against love, and in the end, as it always does, love wins.

Territorio de Zaguates rescues and shelters hundreds of dogs in Costa Rica with no home so they can “receive lots of affection and socialize with the people and families.” Scroll down below to see pictures of Cala’s transformation!

When she was rescued Cala was so malnourished she couldn’t even stand and was covered with wounds and gashes from being chained up

Her health was so poor that if Cala hadn’t been found when she was she would have died

Nursing her back to health was a lengthy and painful process for the pup

In addition to the pain, she was very mistrusting of other dogs and humans

But the rescue team was not going to give up on her

However, even after her rescue Cala learn again how cruel people can be

In June, some people snuck into the sanctuary in an attempt to poison the dogs with tainted sausages

Tragically 16 dogs were killed, but Cala managed to survive only suffering from some brief neurological problems

Lya Battle, the founder of Territorio de Zaguates, told the Dodo that she survived due too her size and because she was “Just too tough a cookie!”

Today Cala is living her best life in a new home. “She is happy, strong, willful, a bit stubborn, and spoiled by her foster mom and family,” reported Battle

Even though her story has a happy ending, people were infuriated to hear of her former abuse

It seems that it's impossible to look anywere these days without seeing humans who delight in the spectrum of despicable behaviours, from crass selfishness through to outright cruelty. I'm normally a gentle sort of person, but when confronted with this I think that the best punishment would be the biblical maxim of an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. I for one would feel no sympathy if the owner were hung by a chain like this for the same amount of time that this dog suffered, and fed the same diet.

Same here, you are not alone. Also, if I could find all the people who deliberately poisoned dogs/other animals at some point of their life, I'd not just demand for them to be poisoned the same way, I'd like to watch it happen too.

I poked one of my dogs in the eye last night when it was dark, reaching out to pet her and then I spent the next 5 minutes kissing her and telling her how sorry I was.

Sad that animals like this exist. I mean the 2 legged ones. Every one of the pets I have owned are rescues. Ferrets, cats and dogs all were mistreated. They were all sweethearts.

I wasn't going to click this story, (seen it on social media) its to much, I said to myself, two days later after reading another story here, I scrolled down and there it is again, ugh I'll look, sigh~ I can't even, no words, the evil in this world, I accidentally boop my dog on the head (we are always so closely together, my moving and his moving at the same time sometimes we collide) and tears spring into my eyes, hes fine but it hurts me so much. I look at him, all 8lbs of him, and my arms don't fit around him, hes so mighty my heart can't hold all of his love, he is the most perfect love I've ever had, true unconditional love..How can anyone betray that, that is truly evil personified.

Killing dogs with poisoned sausages? What evil bastards, those poor dogs thinking they were getting something nice but actually being fed poison, bastsrds. What is so wrong with you that you do this? If you've been through sh*t be the person who ensures others don't, don't be the bastard that puts others through sh*t.

In some States those kind of actions against an animal have hefty fines and lots of jail time!! That needs to be in every State, nah all around the World.

I get upset when i accidentally step on my dogs paw! I just wish people were good, all people. Poor babies, I'd love them all if I could.

I am literally crying. How could anyone buy/get an animal & expose them to this much hate & abuse. My two dogs come before anyone! I will die for them. They are first to be put to bed at night, and they get to choose which side of bed they get. I leave my car running with AV on if I happen to go to a store they can't go in (they are small breeds). I absolutely hate humans that do this to innocent animals. It tells me a lot about them. No heart or soul. And I hope they caught the scum that poisoned the dogs. What the hell for? Sick bastards. It does warm my heart to know this pretty animal will forever know love & comfort now. Bless those who rescued her.

People who teat animals and children like this are not animals, these people were born without souls and if they do have souls then they came from Hell to plague the earth with their ever ending evil. If they torch er animals then they also torch er their off spring and it goes on and on. They need to be stopped and taught what is right to stop the cycle.

The people who treat animals this way should be tried in a court and prosecuted exactly the same was as they are for torture and abuse with people. No person or animal should be subjected to such abuse. They should also be banned from ever owning any pets. The do not deserve to have them. We take children away from bad homes and put them in foster care or award them to responsible homes. We should have a policing division of the laws in our country to protect animals from abuse.

Once released animals can gain back not only physical health, they don't tend as much as we do, to rethink past, at least it is what I noticed and she looks pretty happy afterward - not an excuse only focussing on the good things, becaus there is no chance I could ever understand these actions to abuse a animal, but maybe there is a special hell for people like them, maybe they are living just in it, there must be something really really bad going on there. On the other side, we all are not much better as this, don't we turn our heads and look away when it comes to foodanimals? Some of them are suffering too and I don't talk because they have to be killed for us, I talk about how they are held.

of course it's a pit bull. Seems every time I hear of some heinous abuse case, it was inflicted on a pit bull. And she was a guard dog? WTF was she supposed to do on that chain? How was she supposed to go after anyone anyway? Pissant humans. If you don't like dogs, DON'T GET A DOG. It's not rocket science, aholes. If I see a dog tied up like this, i wouldn't even wait for someone else to act; I'd head over there at night with chain cutters and take them home. ugh, I hate people.

Some benighted people still believe that animals have no feelings and do not suffer pain. This owner of this Pit Bull probably fell into that category, and valued the dog only for its threatening reputation. Pit Bulls, more than any other breed, are all too often acquired for reasons that are just wrong, wrong, wrong - to be macho accessories, to intimidate rivals, to back-yard breed, and alas, to fight - and this is one of those reasons. Even if the reasons aren't criminal or nefarious, some Pit Bulls are acquired as pets, but their irresponsible owners don't bother to train and socialize them, or to neuter them. Bad things ensue - some Pits are simply abandoned by their owners when they become too hard to handle (on one typical day at a local shelter there were 52 dogs - 48 of them were Pit Bulls! Mostly two year old, un-neutered males). Worse, they become involved in dog attacks, too often fatal. We humans created the breed - in so doing we gave them a helluva row to hoe.

2- ........ this s**t stop! Also 3-) if folks are to soft hearted to carry out embarrassing the abusers then they should be made to go through the courts! I think a jury trail would be the most effective But i know there are some judges out there that are doing alternative methods of punishment that shows they do care. Just allowing an abuser throw money at their problems does not work. If the shelter or rescues do not have the funds for persecution then they should tell the public at the same time they are looking for funds to keep their rescues open. Kind and loving pet owners that are tired of seeing this over and over and over for years on end with no end on sight would happily donate another $10-$20 or more if required to punish these sob abusers. And at least have a chance at punish 4-) we ABSOLUTELY MUST GET A NATIONAL REGISTRY UP AND RUNNING TO STOP THESE ANMALS FROM JUST GETTING ANOTHER ANIMAL AND REPEATING THE CRUELTY OVER AND OVER. AFTER THEIR FIRST DOG IS SAVED!!!!!

The story needs to contain info on whether or not the pups original owner was or was not prosecuted for this horrible crime. It should also contain the original owners name and address. #1) They should be prosecuted without doubt. #2) if they can treat another sentient being like this. They are just as capable of doing great harm to humans. Also. If they do a crime such as this. They need to have their name and location placed in all stories if saves and recoveries or even deaths. So they can hopefully be embarrassed by their neighbors and hopefully ostracized from their community. And it works exactly the same as the saying (" if you cant do the time -Dont do the crime") they deserve at least that really so much more. But this would be a less expensive way to see that the pos owners at least receive some punishment band after two or three suffer their consequences of their crimes im positive that our rates of animal abuse would decrease. We have got to do something shocking...........

A lot of humans don't even respect humans, so it's unsurprising that this happened . . . And is still happening. I really don't care about whether it was a short chain or a long one, don't trap any animals like that. If a 'pet' doesn't want to cooperate with you without chains or cages, it's best to let them live in the wild, or wherever is suitable for them.

How did the owner think this poor animal was going to "guard" his garage when she couldn't even move? There is no logical answer or reason for someone to treat an animal so shamefully. He didn't want a guard dog; he wanted an animal to torture. I will never understand the warped mines of individuals who mistreat animals and small children with such reckless behavior. Some way, some day, I hope the owner will reap the rewards of his treatment to this sweet animal.

No one is required to have animals. If you can not treat them decently then why do you have them? Give them to someone who cares for them.

This is what comes of treating animals as a commodity. Be that breeding them for blood sport, consumption, work, or as pets. People think if they treat their pets well they’re not guilty of abuse, but these animals are still bred into weird and wonderful shapes, separated from their mother at too young an age and forced to live unnatural, stunted lives with a pack from another species who’s whims they are dependent on. It all sucks, frankly.

I am so FURIOUS at people who mistreat animals in any way. There isn't a punishment bad enough for a person who inflicts pain and suffering on any living creature, whether human or animal. I truly don't understand human nature sometimes. Thank God for the kind people who rescued this poor dog, and those who are now caring for her.

I hate it when people got pets but doesn't know how to care about it, like they didn't know that the chains/leash is snaring the neck of their pets, they are hungry, thirsty, stressed, needs to pee/poop, uncomfortable to their area. They are already mistreated yet there are still this psychopaths who wants to kill those who were already rescued? how desperate of them, they really need a rehab or therapy.

"Her health was so poor that if Cala hadn’t been found when she was she would have died" I don't know why stories always make this claim. She really doesn't look to be on deaths door, and how likely is it really that all of these animals were rescued "just in time"?

Because they don't show you the stories of dogs who didn't. Trust me, so many other animals die every day because no one cares to help them. These stories are the survivors of such abuse.

They are first to be put to bed at night, and they get to choose which side of bed they get. I leave my car running with AV on if I happen to go to a store they can't go in (they are small breeds).

I feel so sorry for Cala! I think the person who chained her needs the worst punishment imaginable! I mean, who would do that to a dog? Dogs have feelings, too!

I wonder, if its owner was hung out with the same chain for some period of time? I believe, it's the only reliable way to punish such heartless a******s and teach them life. Eye for an eye.

Ok... why get a dog/animal just to abuse them!?! It just doesn't make sense because you don't NEED to have a pet. >:(

I have asked this question before : Would the previous owner of this beautiful girl have done the same thing to his own children?

This is what comes of treating animals as a commodity. Be that breeding them for blood sport, consumption, work, or as pets. People think if they treat their pets well they’re not guilty of abuse, but these animals are still bred into weird and wonderful shapes, separated from their mother at too young an age and forced to live unnatural, stunted lives with a pack from another species who’s whims they are dependent on. It all sucks, frankly.

If you are in Australia and see this sort of horror the Organization to call is RSPCA Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. They also have animals for adoptions.

I've never seen a dog abused in this horrible way. What kind of sick f*** does this to a dog? Were they punished? Probably not. But they will be punished in other ways and may they be the most disgusting inhumane and despicable ways possible. What goes around comes around you POS

Her owners were proof of psychopaths who are incapable of torchering people so they resort to poor animals. I hope this "tough cookie " finds a forever loving family.

We live in a sick, f-cked up world where cruelty is rampant. I don't understand the mentality of those who abused this innocent dog, nor do I want to. Same withe psychopath(s) who tried to poison the dogs. Though I know that it is unlikely, I hope that they are found and treated the same way as Calla and the other dogs were treated. I wouldn't shed a tear.

I'm glad the pup was rescued, but why did it take so long? Leaving the animal in that hell for "years" what is wrong with the people who saw it and knew about it but didn't do anything?

This was a tough one to see. My heart was broken seeing the photos then reading the article. Aside from the atrocities, why on earth did it take the authorities years to rescue this darling girl!?!

NO animal should be subject to this...evil people like this should suffer the same...humans like this are the most vile to pick on the helpless.
