Ever wonder why we can’t get those New Year’s resolutions to stick for longer than a few days or weeks? Well, the answer is likely that if the behavior is not repeated consistently enough to become habitual, then it is unlikely to stick and lead to any meaningful long-term changes in our behavior.

In fact, this is backed up by science. Dr. Wendy Wood, the former Provost Professor of Psychology and Business at the University of Southern California (USC), found that more than 40% of people’s daily behavior was habitual. “Habits can be activated automatically without conscious thought, which means that habits are often the default response we revert to unless we have a strong desire to act differently,” says psychologist Asaf Mazar of USC.

Taking that line of thought, if we work to create positive habits, then we are programming ourselves to have natural responses that are positive and help us stick to our goals.

Happiness is the ultimate goal that most of us strive to achieve for ourselves and our loved ones. That being the case, here are 12 beautifully illustrated habits from the happiness app WHOLE that can help you improve your happiness in 2023. Check out the free WHOLE app for help building these habits so they become part of your everyday life.

I'd still be worried about people who can read minds, even though I know it's probably not real, but I would still be paranoid

I have ocd, I've learnt that my excessive counting actually helps distract my mind from depressive thoughts. Give it a try. The trick is to not count things that are impossible to keep up with, like lines on the road but rather count the windows or sides of objects to start with.

I always say that if you awake from a nightmare, turn on the light and name all the things you can see. Not only does it distract you, but it ensures that you're not fixing that nightmare into your memory to repeat it when you sleep again in an hour or so. Really helps.

I will try this out. My typically method for dealing with anxiety is panicking or quietly mumbling words of terror to myself. It hasn't worked, but I keep trying.

Opinions vary on this one. Some folks say yes some say no. I think it's a comfort thing. Try it-if it works for you great. I do this to get sleepy but end of removing them in the middle of the night because I'm too warm

Play recordings of birds around Ricky and give him treats. He'll associate the birdsong with positive connotations and start imitating those instead. (Or try to, cockatiels aren't parrots)

As long as it's a low crime area, I am the opposite. Dark winter walks have a very calming effect for me. That's the beauty of self care though, everyone has their own release.

I actually posted on Pinterest that a bed is so much comfier when it's all mushed up than made and I had a "like" by Judge Judy too! To be fair, my husband does his side of the bed - military style too. Our children never blinked an eye on this discrepancy.
