"it seems"...Martha, let me tell you a secret: the large majority of the Rom, or Romaní that live in Romania do not even want to integrate.Starting with the basic point that the name Rom/Romaní is requested by each one of them. "I am Rom, not Romanian". That is and will be their answer as long as they are in Romanian territory. There's between three or four types of gypsies/travellers, each one of them focusing on different things, and identifiable through their clothing. All of them look down at each other and even lower down to the non-rom. Registering kids with the council is something more from the last decade or two. Even with waiving the registration fees for the Rom it didn't work. "we are travellers, free spirits, this is only to control us". Heck, by their own mentality/habits, girls going to school for more than a couple of years (reading / writing /basic maths) was unheard of until recent. How can you integrate someone that works actively against your efforts? Fines won't work, benefits won't either, what's left?

@Martha, I'm Bulgarian and we face the same problems as Romanians. I'm sure they've done plenty to integrate them, but it to limited results. They get money from various social programs (and back in communist times there was an attempt in one of our cities to get them out of the filthy illegal and unstable houses they live in by bulding apartment buildings and giving them the apartments for free; they just thrashed them), local and european, and the results are barely existan. Instead it's the opposite - they've learned they don't have to do honest work to get money.

Gypsies are impossible to integrate, the majority are welfare freeloaders.

Maybe on an upbeat note; half of my family come from the traveller and Roma/Sinti community (The Netherlands). And I'm just like any other Dutch person, so integration is possible (or maybe this is just a fluke). Some live in a house, some don't. And yes they have a job, even the women, and everyone goes to highschool. And no, I'm not going into stuff like discrimination, freeloaders and 'what else'. And as a non traveller or Roma/Sinti woman I'm fiercely proud of them, and yes they're not saints (but neither am I). But on a different note, they visit church a whole lot more then I do ;) And they would never tolerate behaviour like this, it's just so rude.

“A massive generalization” are you joking. Travelers are filthy. They nearly always leave dirt and filth everywhere the go. They flaunt the law and cause havoc everywhere. Yes, a few, are ok, but they are very few and far between. In general travelers are a nuisance to society and they are getting more aggressive and violent because people are afraid of them. That young kid is going to grow up to be a lovely person isn’t he.

I completely agree that you need to treat everyone as an individual and do your best not to just slap a label on people, the stereotype is embedded in our culture and hugely difficult to shift as a society. Great principle, but every individual can be judged on the basis of their actions. It is no one else's fault when someone is aggressive, rude and vandalised everywhere they go. Their ethnic group cannot excuse their actions is that case, although they will try to use discrimination as an excuse. And before anyone asks, I am referring to a few individuals I met myself. I also know a couple of 'settled travellers' who lead law-abiding, honest lives, for whom I have the greatest respect. Treat them as individuals.

No, Travelers. Romani, the group commonly known as gypsies are a different ethnic group than Travelers.

It's not casual hate, and this IS speaking from personal experience. Roll your eyes and bah all you like, i'm sorry your friend had to suffer that, but they are generally a nuisance. imagine the above story, but with a group of 20, now multiply that group a couple more times within the same town. and then endure that every damn year.

Diane, ask a farmer about how they use their 'empty' fields. It may be mepty now, but in the spring farm animals may graze on it, or it may be ploughed for planting crops. Just because a field is empty now, does not mean it's empty all year round.

I've met what they call travellers over there. They are actually gypsys but I don't think they are a specific nationality or race, it's more a social thing. So she's not being racists it's just a bunch of very rowdy people that have absolutely no respect for anyone. Seriously I've had them at the casino in Reno where i bartended. They trashed the rooms, BBQ'd INSIDE of a hotel room, had live chickens in there and tried to steal my tips off the bar.

As the person with family from the traveller- and Roma/Sinti community, I've heard so much c**p. The 'most beautiful' was; they've gassed them in WWII, they've forgotten you and your family. I was about ten years old then and an adult said that to me, and the Dutch are tolerant... hmmm. And yes, there bad eggs (or was it apples?) as well, I've had the 'privilege' to meet them too... and no I didn't like them at all. Ohhh shoot, now I did talk about discrimination and intolerance (I probably just couldn't help myself). What I mean to say is; no community consist out of 100% good people or 100% bad people, that's just impossible.

Travelling communities should have the right to stay on land for a temporary period - so long as they agree to keep the site clean, no human waste, no nuisance to local residents and dispose of their rubbish. An empty field is no use to any-one

They refer to themselves as being part of the "Travelling Community". They are officially known here as Travellers. Don't be ignorant when accusing someone of being racist. i'm far from. Travelers are not necessarily Romany.

It isn't racist - they ARE travellers as they have a travelling lifestyle. Ok in the past they would have had horse drawn caravans - now they have big motorhomes and luxury caravans. There was a group of about 10 vehicles in the car park behind my house for a few hours one day and there was some serious money on display. I do wonder how they get mail etc.

The word itself is not racist, but the use often is.
