There’s a saying that you can’t buy happiness but as we’re living in these commercial-based times, certainly not all of us would agree. While surely welcome and useful, money is not necessary in every case.  Sometimes all it takes to surprise and show affection to a loved one is just some time and creativity. And being really attentive towards that other person, of course. This was exactly one guy’s approach when picking out a gift to present his girlfriend for their two-year anniversary. Knowing she’s been struggling with her anxiety quite a lot during the time leading up to their special celebration, he came up with the best medicine she could ever have. Scroll down to find out more about his brilliant idea!

Denisha and Riley have been together for 2 years. And the last couple of weeks before their anniversary on July 24, Denisha had been really struggling with her anxiety and panic attacks. So Riley came up with a beautiful and thoughtful gift for their 2-year anniversary and called it “love pills”. He ordered empty gelatin capsules from a Walmart pharmacy and filled each of them with little notes that say something loving or sweet, something that will make his girlfriend happy, or a good quality about her. It took him about 2 hours to write the notes. There’s a total of 60 of them. Riley says it sometimes feels that Denisha does more for him than he does for her, so it was nice to do something to give back.

Knowing she had a couple of bad weeks struggling with anxiety and panic attacks, he figured love would be the best medicine

Riley came up with the idea after he got back to Canada after spending a year together in Germany. He realized that it’s hard on Denisha to be away from her family and since she hasn’t had a good experience with therapy and doesn’t like to take pills, he thought he would make a twist on them. “I said to her that when she goes through them all, she can come back for a refill”.

And made her these “love pills” by ordering empty gelatin capsules and filling them with little notes

Denisha first started having anxiety at 14-15 years old. She always had been quite nervous in certain situations but it got a lot worse during puberty. The panic attacks came a lot later though. She says “that was when I was around 17, so it kinda developed over time”.

She told Riley about her anxiety and panic attacks pretty early on in their relationship and he says he’s really thankful for that. “It’s really good to tell people what you’re dealing with before you get involved,” he says. She was quite nervous about telling him in the beginning though, but she just wanted to go into the relationship being honest to each other.

It took him two hours in total to write all the little notes that he later filled the capsules with

It all turned out really great as Riley is actually diagnosed with anxiety as well, so the two could really understand what the other is going through. “We’re now able to help each other with that too,” Denisha says. She also adds that not being honest about her mental health problems right away was a problem in her previous relationships, therefore she wanted to get the right start this time.

Denisha couldn’t be happier and said, “Gifts don’t have to cost $100 to be meaningful, a couple bucks and some creativity.”

When asked for advice for those trying to help loved ones with mental health issues, Riley says: “If you have any problems, you should focus on them. Not to the point where you ignore your partner but make sure you’re okay first. When you’re good then you can help more. And second, just be really compassionate. I forget that a lot too, it’s hard to remember because sometimes it’s hidden, you don’t notice – somebody can be smiling but they’re really not feeling good inside. It’s important to just remember that and be compassionate.”

The Internet immediately swooned over Riley’s beautiful gesture.

I love this idea. I also know from experience that panic attacks and anxiety should be taken seriously and she should see a physician.

real medicine might also be helpful. Placebos do work up to a point but after that seek help.

@Tiffany Marie, idk why people keep disliking your comment, it's a legit question, but i guess you should first try free therapy (idk if they have that in the Us but they do in Canada) or you could try online or on the phone therapy which can work well

People that suffer from anxiety and depression should definitely cut down their coffee intake since it has negative effects

I had major surgery once. Life or death. The guy that swore he loved me left me alone to have surgery because he said he had a meeting at work, at which point he took a 2 hour lunch with his buddies. Then there was the winner who didn't even acknowledge my birthday and left me alone all day to go fishing. Oh and the holidays? He had to be with his kids in another state, and since is ex is a flaming train from hell full of shrieking bats, it was impossible for me to go. Look -- I get it. I'm happy for her. But there are some of us who pray all our lives to find one ounce of good and we never get it. I have severe panic attacks, PTSD and depression. I was raped. And I can't even find someone who gives a damn enough to take out the trash. Where the actual fu** do men like this exist? Where?

Yeah, these are cute. A nice thing for a guy to do for his girl. Hopefully a doctor's visit can also happen. Definitely need a little of both.

That’s great :) understanding and compassion from loved ones makes all the difference when struggling with mental illness. I wish I had someone like this, they’re both very lucky to have one another. This warms my heart !

This man is a KEEPER! Not every partner has this much compassion and understanding for mental health issues.
