Generational discourse is pretty popular, even if it mostly exists for one group or another to pass blame on why, say, the diamond industry or business wear is dying. Self-proclaimed experts pass around sweeping descriptions of what one group likes and dislikes with supreme confidence. So if you sometimes feel like you don’t fit the many, many molds out there, you aren’t alone.

This Facebook group gathers the memes, life experiences, and situations experienced by those caught between being a millennial and gen z. We got in touch with the team behind it to find out more. So upvote whatever you find relatable, funny, or inexplicable, and comment your own thoughts on what it might mean to be between generations.

Same. Just yesterday I was explaining to my partner that, no, I don't have zero patience in general, I have zero patience with s**t that causes delays in whatever it is that I'm trying to do (e.g. ads running when I'm trying to watch a tutorial, or pop-ups when I'm trying to read information I need at that moment).

That's a really good question. I think most teachers would actually be able to answer this (at least where I love/teach) as they are taught to have differentiated lessons to cater for top and bottom students as well as the core. I had one student who was very behind in reading/writing and he had extra lessons one on one with someone trained in that area and when I was teaching him, I gave him extra time to catch up and didn't penalise him for unfinished work.

We don't have graduations in Australia quite the same as the US. Our 'graduation' is usually part of our formal/valedictory dinner dance. We get presented our certificate but lots of people don't invite parents, just want to have a good night with friends and we don't do speeches usually, except maybe by the principal. We don't generally get our final marks until at least a month after this. (At least in my state)The certificate we are presented with is the one that says the school regards us as having graduated. We get our official, state endorsed, certificate in the mail with our final marks. The Dux (valedictorian) usually comes to the school presentation night the following school year and does a speech to the students still at the school about working hard etc and what it has enabled to go on to study. The year level after mine the overall scores were so low they either didn't award a dux, or they just didn't invite them to come and speak.

This might vary from place to place in Australia. In QLD we used to have a graduation night where we all got our certificates, and at least a couple kids gave speeches. School captain and sports captains from memory. My youngest sisters had something similar recently (in the last five years or so), though they went to a private school (I went to public). I honestly thought it was a waste of time. Why would I want to waste most of an evening just to get a piece of paper telling me how well I did?

Bored Panda contacted the folks behind the "Born Zillennial" page to find out some more. First, we wanted to know about its origins. "Born Zillennial was created for the BZ Creator Matt Duffy’s UF grad school course, Social Media Community Management. The goal for the assignment was to recruit 100 members, and after one TikTok went viral, the community quickly gained over 20,000 members in a 24-hour period. We now have almost 210,000 members since it was created in the Fall of 2020."

A natural question when it comes to subgroups is how deep does it go, so we asked if Zillennials themselves fall into smaller categories: "For the purposes of our group, anyone that can relate to the content shared in the group is more than welcome to partake. 58% of our group is ages 25-34, with 1996-1998 being the largest demographic in the group. That being said, we don’t have any specific subdivisions within the group that we label any further."

Of course, it's always important to consider how useful these terms are for understanding a group. "Overall, generational tags are not always super accurate because there are so many other factors that affect a person’s identity, whether it’s where they grew up, the person they grew up around, and many other socioeconomic factors. For example, some of our members are born in 2000 but have siblings that were born in 1992, and they are familiar with the content that other people in 2000 may not know about. We use the term Zillennial since it is encompassing the two major generations that impacted us growing up, and we are proof of how generational tags are not always accurate." You can find more about Born Zillenial on Instagram, Twitter, and their site here.

To add another potentially confusing word into the mix, sociologists sometimes refer to “cuspers,” as in people on the cusp of being part of one generation or another. Like the zillennials here, people born at the tail end of one generation will often have a mix of the traits possessed by both. Xennials are another example of “cuspers,” people who do not feel like they are quite fully gen x, but also not millennials.

Burning CDs doesn't compare to copying floppy disks. Copying floppies meant bicycling to a friend's house with a box of blank floppies, eating junk food, playing D&D, and setting off firecrackers in the backyard while the computer copied your friend's games.

In general, the study of differences between generations is quite old, as most even unrelated surveys will still care about age as a demographic measure. But it’s only relatively recently that scientists started creating specific terms to describe large groups. Generally, gen x was the first to receive this treatment, which was applied retroactively to baby boomers who were quickly “reduced” to just boomers.

Despite the two very separate labels, millennials and gen z do often have more in common than different. Both are global generations, connected, generally all the time, to other people via the internet. This is just as true of current gen x and the baby boomers, but the two aforementioned groups grew up with the internet. Zillennials in particular, being on the younger edge of millennialism generally fall into the category of digital natives.

Both generations also have, at some level, experienced at least one crisis, from 2008 to Covid 19. This economic upheaval has left people less optimistic and with less faith in the economic system in general. However, both cohorts, and by extension millennials, benefit from the ocean of information out there, gaining skills, knowledge, and other benefits from the internet considerably faster than they would have from a traditional means of education.

Was watching something on Netflix and they started talking in a foreign language. Subtitles said: “speaks in a foreign language”. Me: frantically trying to turn on subtitles, so I can *hear*. Hubby: “The subtitles *are* on.” Me: “No, they’re not.” Hubby: “Yes, they are. Thats why it says ‘speaks in a foreign language’.”

We spent a lot of time at a deaf friends house hanging out. Captions always on. Well we got so used to it we usually have captions on now. It helps you not to miss things. Especially with 2 loud children running around.

It’s not all similarities though. Sociologists have found that the vast majority of millennials put themselves into the millennial generation by default. Even among the technologically inclined millennials, zillennials are particularly adept, displaying a lot of creativity and skill in the digital realm. While they might not be true digital natives like gen z, by the time they were old enough to actually properly interact with the world, technology and the internet was in widespread use.

I was trying to find some pics of myself in bad outfits recently (for another bp post) and I found I really had few pictures of myself in the great outfits, let alone bad ones. I wish I had some like these! I want pictures of me in my cool multicoloured cords or flares, my shirts that looked like corsets, shirts with funny text on them (like, I'm the hotter friend) etc.

Zillenials also stand out in the sense that they are the one “cusper” generation most likely to actually see themselves as a separate, distinct “minority” generation. The existence of the “Born Zillennial” group is ample evidence that there is a segment of the population that most definitely wants to not be lumped together with the industry-destroying millennials or always-online zoomers.

They might in some ways find a lot in common with the xennials, those born between the millennials and gen x. While zillennials are very comfortable with technology, they could still be seen as digital immigrants, as they weren't quite the “Ipad kids” of today. Both xillennials and zillennials, which sound way too similar when spoken out loud, are a bit cynical and not quite as optimistic as millennials. If you want to keep exploring these generational questions, check out our other article here

To be qualified as an "antique" the item in question would have to be at least 100 years old. Anything younger than that is just vintage. I still feel old as hell now though.

For a few years I worked at a TV sports network, and we all had little tvs in our cubicles (supposedly to watch one of our networks channels). In my experience, 25 was the defining age where you couldn't exactly relate to the 30+ yr olds, but the 18-24 yr olds were just too immature to be around. I'm in my 50s now and I find everyone under the age of 45 to be amusing at best.

Cars was, and still is, my favourite Pixar movie. Now the animation might not be the best,, like The Lion King, and the plot might not live up to the standards of Ratatouille, but Cars will always hold a special place in my heart. They somehow capture the vibe of a calm drive in a movie, and I love it for that.

Yeah, Nickelodeon bosses must have been totally high back in the day. I first saw Ren and Stimpy at the Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation. That should have been a clue right there. Now, the first Rugrats shorts were shown at the regular Festival of Animation. Ren and Stimpy was way ahead of its time, and is totally wasted on kids.

We're up to Sims 4 and they still do this, but we've figured it out! If you put a cabinet over the kitchen sink they can't use it, use a half cabinet and they can use it!

They still do this as well as go to the kitchen to wash their hands after going to the bathroom. Sometimes when you tell them to pee, they drink another glass of water instead. Okay, pee your pants, I don't care. Fortunately, they go to bed under the covers to be ashamed on their own.

None of the above- I grew up with cartoons (Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner Show, The Pink Panther/Rocky and Bullwinkle, Hong Kong Fuey) , which weren't "serial" but I watched them while eating cereal, especially on Saturday mornings! And, some of the "commercials" were educational animated shorts like Schoolhouse Rock. There was another that promoted health. https://youtu.be/MdTbsvBJxSo?list=PL5CHGL0WjUrTSg5C9oLwSLliclsW4kL4O
