In a fun little factoid, sure to delight and amuse any gen-x history buff, the term generation x was actually coined by none other than famed Hungarian photographer Rober Capa, possibly best known for his work documenting the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War. His 1950 photo essay about the generation who had grown up during the war was titled “Generation X,” representing their alienation.

While the term didn’t stick to this group in particular, the idea of a generation alienated from everything by the time they could read survived and was applied to the cohort that was born in the late 1970s to early 1980s.

The X, incidentally, represented a sort of unknown value, as one would see in a simple math problem. This was an interesting change in pace from the baby boomers and the greatest generation, whose names contained some more useful descriptors, which is potentially why, when it comes to generational discourse, Gen X remains the least talked about, compared to millennials and Gen Z.

Studies of Gen X behavior suggest that many of the “simple” pleasures are listed here due to this generation's appreciation for a work-life balance. While chores are obviously not the same as work, doing some daily tasks efficiently is its own reward, while some weekend shopping is a relaxing getaway, the ability to walk around, take one’s time and just enjoy not being on the clock.

This appreciation for the simple things in life might be the reason Gen X, at least in the US, reports a relatively high level of life satisfaction. They also tend to not care as much about what other people think of them, which probably allows them to openly admit that, for example, a trip to Home Depot is a good weekend activity. Unburdened by Boomer’s old-fashioned perspectives and Millenial’s and Zoomer's constant comparison to people online, Gen X appears content to just relax.

So hopefully many of the concepts here serve as a reminder to not make far-reaching judgments as a child, who knows when cooking an entire meal with minimal clean-up requirements will spark joy. Once, I lost my ex-hubby in Cabella’s (a giant outdoorsy type store… hunting stuff, fishing stuff, camping stuff, they even sell boats). I was so frustrated when I couldn’t find him. He had a tendency to buy weird stuff we totally didn’t need. Then it dawned on me… Ah! This must be how he feels when he loses me in IKEA!!! Side note: I found him at the registers paying $350 for a legit deli quality meat slicer. :/ It took up more space on our countertops than the stove top did. Now, ask me if he ever used it… once, sort of… he sliced the pad off three fingers. He hadn’t even put any food on it yet. :/

My bf's dad get so insanely aggressive and angry when he's in IKEA so his wife swore to never ever go to IKEA with him again. My bf once went there with his dad to fetch aomething real quick that he knew exactly where was. The whole trip was 10min max. And still his dad was so angry and aggressive that he slammed the super angry button at the exit (the first few years the IKEA was open they had some buttons by the exit for the customers to push, ranging from happy to super angry) and he didn't say a word in the car home. Lol.

My wife and I almost called off our wedding while in the store because she kept picking up odds and ends and going, "Do you think this (item) would go with our (item) at home?" After what felt like the 10,000th time she asked this, I was done and needed to leave. We argued about it, because there were still numerous sections to peruse, and finally left very angry at one another. Now, she goes alone and spends as much time there as she wants!

Exciting weekend for my husband and me is piling into our car to hit a coffee shop. Then hit Wegmans for groceries and get coffee afterwards. And if we're still up for it...hit HMart so I can restock our pantry with international staples. And hit their coffee/bakery for another beverage and snack.

And mad props for the folks who brave Costco on the weekends. Went on a Saturday and that level of bedlam was a Pope of Nope card for me.

Our neighbours have 3 mini-sheep. They have two pastures. One is at the side of their house, where I can't see them, the other is between our houses, a bit higher than my home office window. One of my greatest enjoyments is when they put those cute little sheep on that pasture and I get to watch them all day. It's so enjoyable to see those cuties play all day, stealing leaves and fruit from the cherry tree smack in the middle of the pasture in summer. It's so peaceful.

I live in the country. I love to get he a hot cup of coffee, go outside on the back porch, and just sit and enjoy the show nature puts on at dusk. The sounds are incredible, the smell is wonderful, and the stars are beyond compare.

I am 46 years now and I enjoy doing the wildest things. Giving the kitchen a good deep cleaning, having nice and clean windows or buying a fancy thing for our apartment like a brand new table cloth or a nice kitchen utensil. And sitting down with a new book, reading in it for hours and smell the new book smell on every page! Yes, life is wild.

Trust me: you aren't missing much. Target is just Wal-Mart with better PR and cleaner floors. They have a lot of variety but most goods are in the middle of the road when it comes to quality. Costco is fun until the appeal of five pound bags of chips wears off. (Pro tip: you *will* eat the whole bag of chips in a day. Save yourself future problems and just get regular sized bags of chips.) Also, there seems to be an unwritten rule that you must spend at least $200, even though you only bought three things.

No big warehouse stores within a reasonable distance of my home, I love this fact, it’s hills and fields for miles, no motorways, all country roads. No big warehouse stores nearby, this sends me nuts, I want cheap stuff, I need to buy massive quantities of things, just things, no idea what but I hate living in the countryside….

Not Gen-X, but i do enjoy most of these. Also you can enjoy doing nothing, housework hacks, new kitchen utensils, going to sleep early AND going out to a bar/restaurant, having fun with friends, travel and being active all at the same time (on different days of course). Life is about variety - at any age (in my opinion) and everyone can enjoy life the way he/she wants as long as you really enjoy it. I find it sad how many people i know pretend they‘re happy with grocery shopping on weekends and then doing nothing, when in reality it‘s because their friends stopped going out with them or because they are too tired because of work. But if this is what you truly enjoy, great ☺️🥳.
