Photographer Challenges ‘American Beauty’ Standards With 14 Women Of All Shapes

San Francisco-based photographer Carey Fruth has set out to redefine what ‘American beauty’ is with a photo series of the same name that has women of all body types posing in romantic beds of flower petals. Fruth was inspired by a racy scene from the 1999 movie of the same name in which Kevin Spacey fantasized about one of his daughter’s friends.

“By stepping into a fantasy dream girl world and by letting go of that fear, they free themselves up to direct that energy they once wasted on telling themselves that they weren’t good enough to elsewhere in their life,” Fruth told Huffpost.

I really liked this, it was lovely. And these women are incredibly brave. I'm not sure I have the ovaries to do a project like this.

I like how you said "ovaries" as opposed to the conventional "balls" :D

I feel like the point of this was to show women naturally, however it still appears as if all their stretch marks and scars have been airbrushed away.

As a fat woman, I know these are Photoshopped because there are no stretch marks or bra grooves.

I would have liked this a lot more if the models hadn't had "mannequin skin", nary a freckle or flaw. Celebrating the body includes the SKIN WE'RE IN.

I am not a hater, but every time someone shows "normal women" or "natural women", there are only photos of fat women with a (very) nice face. I'd say that it will be more "normal" to present ugly faces also. For example, i have a nice and fit body, but a horrible face, and i just look at this kind of photos thinking: ok, so a 200 kg woman is considered to be more beautiful than me. It just seems that most of the people are more comfortable seeing fat bodies than ugly faces.

I'm sorry you consider yourself "ugly." You're right on point with your comment, though. I will say that well- groomed ends up trumping that fickle "beauty" in the end...

None of these photos show body hair of any kind. The media always portrays the female body as hairless and shiny as a newborn baby, which is totally unrealistic.

Stand up and be proud. The way the " new society " wants the perfect body and shape and everything have gone overboard deluxé. Back in the 90s / and earlier i cant remember people being so obsessed with their look like it is today with the way of social media and "the ideal body" its crazy. So props to them for standing up and dont feel ashamed cause its all natural! Today you barely can order a coffe with a friend in town without dressing up with the latest fashion clothes and make up like you would enter a hollywood fashion show. ( no im not bitter or upset just my opinion and i hope people out there will be happy just because you are you no matter shape or size. )

There are stretch marks and cellulite. I see a scar on one of their bellies. Someone mentioned ugly faces not being here, but these women are all wearing makeup, so who knows? I think the lighting is what makes it look kind of unreal, but this was a remake with the theme of American Beauty. That scene didn't look too natural, either. It does appear there is a little bit of Photoshopping, but it is a beautiful photoset and I think the photographer kept most of their "flaws" in the photos! As a side note, I don't think these ladies are brave. I think they are confident and there shouldn't be anything to be brave about. I think that they don't need others' opinions to make themselves feel acceptable or beautiful. Just my two (or twenty) cents~

Not sure what your personal opinion is for beauty standards. From what you posted I think it's safe to assume what your trying to say is that, big girls should have smooth skin and be able to pose like the thin 20 somethings you photographed . Also this has been done many times all over the world. As a professional photographer (www.BetterThanBoudoir.com ) who photographs women for a living, I would suggest better poses and camera angles. I agree that beauty comes in many shapes, sizes and color and I photo shop everything I sell and post. Why you ask? Simple, my clients want to look like they stepped out of a magazine which we all know are 99.9% all photo shopped images. Flip side, if I was doing this challenge I would shoot the images to the best of my ability, using creative lighting, poses and angles to create a raw image, un-edited that would be flattering to the body type. Not lay out a large woman on her back! In my opinion this challenge is a major fail, sorry.

As a professional photographer of 15 years. It really bothers me when people cry PHOTOSHOP! for any image that you can't see stretch marks or bra marks. Any decent photographer worth their salt knows how to light an image properly to highlight a persons perfections and hide their imperfections. And you should not call yourself even an amateur photographer if you don't have the common sense to tell your model to wear loose fitting clothes before a shoot like this to avoid marks from bra straps/pants/socks or whatever else. Now i'm not saying photoshop isn't a great tool, and is used frequently and abused by some, but don't think we stand there unprepared and just say "Oh we can photoshop that out later" That's just plain wrong.

We all have opinions, and are entitled to them. I won't say any of you are wrong. But, to those of you commenting on how overweight or obese some of the women are...I think you're missing the point of the whole photo shoot. The whole point was to bring awareness to the unrealistic standards of beauty in America and around the world. These standards cause women (starting as girls, nowadays) to feel inferior, not good enough, not thin enough, etc...And leads to things like body dysmorphic disorder, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, etc. While some women are perfectly happy being the size they are; fat, thin, or somewhere in between, there are others who aren't. Either they're too thin and can't gain weight, too fat but have health problems (like PCOS) that make it difficult to lose weight, or they turn to food to mask emotional problems...other women may look perfectly fine to everyone else - may be that "perfect 10"...but I guarantee there's something she hates about her body.

Sad that we have to celebrate obesity, but only one of those women was over a certain age. Obesity is something we can do something about, both as individuals and as cultures, but age is something that comes to all of us! So forgive my cynicism, show heavily airbrushed overweight and underweight bodies all you like, heaven forbid you actually show 'old' bodies! :(

I get the point the photographer is making but what I don't get is the obsession people have about their bodies nowadays. Granted people have always be concerned about how they looked but physical appearances seem to be the focus more than what the person inside is like. I've known 'not-so-attractive' people who honestly became much more beautiful as I got to know them and love them. And I've also seen physically attractive people appear unattractive and even ugly due to their actions and attitudes. But I do understand that it's not possible to capture someone's personality in photos. Only words can do that. Sadly, we seem to be a society that prefers pictures to words.

Society's ideals are too difficult for ANY of us to live up to. No one should have to try to live up to a Barbie doll, cookie cutter image set forth by a magazine and enforced by the greater public. It'd just be a better world if we could all just allow each other to live our own paths, look how we want, and focus on what's inside-because that's what REALLY matters. Sorry for the length. I'm passionate about this, as you can see. ;)

Like i said no matter size and shape they are all strong and individuals to show of their bodys, but its emberassing to read * they are Photoshoped ofc they are freaking Photoshoped almost every picture are, but 99% of the people comment on this post said where are the stretchmarks etc, you apparently need glasses cause the second picture of the dark woman shows stretchmarks on her stomach and upper legs etc, so what does that tell you, maybe they asked the certain individuals if they are okey with the stretchmarks or cellulites? And maybe she was the only woman who said im fine let them be! So stop cry about the stretchmarks or how much they are Photoshoped , the message is clear, be strong and proud no matte size and shape? Hard to understand the message or are some people just dumb ? Anyway great effort by the artist its good In a society in search of perfection

I agree. There's a glaring gap in here of women in between slender and obese. It would have been a stronger pictorial essay to have had more women of a medium frame to support the idea of "average' being beautiful. I think as it is, it's making a different statement, which could work harder with the inclusion of more mid-sized average women.

I am not a hater, but every time someone shows "normal women" or "natural women", there are only photos of fat women with a (very) nice face. I'd say that it will be more "normal" to present ugly faces also. For example, i have a nice and fit body, but a horrible face, and i just look at this kind of photos thinking: ok, so a 200 kg woman is considered to be more beautiful than me... It seems most of the people are more comfortable with fat bodies than ugly faces

I think the pictures are beautiful, but it bothers me that no one of the fat girls the artist chose have stretch marks, or any spot of dark skin (which is normal in fat girls because of the friction and etc). It's still an unrealistic beauty standard for me. :(

Well, if you are healthy, you' re pretty anyway. But if you're obese or anorectic, that's an illness, a disorder. I'm sorry, but I'm not into supporting obesity and saying: well girls, this is right, this is pretty, because it isn't. Every shape of woman's body is beautiful, untill it's in the normal, healthy form. So yes, every woman is beautiful, but if she's unhealthy, she doesn't look good. I wish our purpose was make inspiring photoshoots of natural healthy good looking women. I know, that some woman can't have normal ibm because of illness or disorder and I get it. They' re charming and beautiful in another way. But I wish, all the sane women saved the normal, healthy figure. Just said

Oh look, let's continue to promote the unhealthy lifestyle of being obese by calling it "beautiful." There's nothing beautiful about poor life choices and over-consumption of resources to meet one's ridiculous needs. Quit promoting this nonsense and point out the health issues associated with being over weight, promote healthy living, healthy eating, exercise and moderation. Enough with this s**t.

It does matter, though. We shouldnt make being morbidly obese glamorous or beautiful. Its ridiculous. Its not beautiful, its not attractive, its not natural. So dont claim it to be. Lose weight and be healthy. Dont try and force others into thinking thats what beautiful should look like. You dont like being forced to think women should look like toothpicks so why should we keep being force fed the exact opposite? Stop with excuses for a change.

I'm sorry, I totally missed the challenge to American beauty standards. The standard I see here is that there are endless waves of women who will pose naked, and they all have perfect complections, even the fatties. Women are the only ones who get to challenge beauty standards. Men are supposed to accept today's women any which way they come, or else we're body-shaming bigots and haters. And yet women indulge in body-shaming, bigotry, and judgement so offhandedly that no one even seems to notice, including them. If you look on Match.com, the height minimum for men is locked-in at 6,' the minimum salary requirement is usually around $50K, and they expect an undergraduate degree...and many are now requiring men to have tattoos as well. Then there's that race thing. On Facebook women come off like they're bleeding heart liberals out of the Obama Administration. They love EVERYONE! All lives matter! But when it comes to dating, suddenly, they're the Daughters of the KKK. If you're a male with darker skin, you've probably seen it on a dating site. It goes "Not prejudiced, just a preference." So to summarize: In America, 2015, women get to have standards -- and high ones at that -- while men are ex

I know a lot of women on Match.com who don't have those standards about height, salary, education level, and race. you seem to have had a bad experience with online dating, and that's unfortunate, but it's shoddy reasoning to conclude that therefore men are somehow the new oppressed class.

We shouldn't be telling these obese women that they're beautiful. They should be told they're unhealthy, fat, and need to do something about it. Just because people want to stuff their faces with junk food and be lazy doesn't mean we need to change what's considered beautiful. They need to change, not us. This is gross!

Obesity is not a crime, obesity is not ugly because you decide it, obesity is not a conclusive evidence of being unhealthy. Obese people are just human beings who got the right to love themselves and feel happy. Now repeat it several times till you realize that your opinion is not an undeniable truth and that your hate against obesity reveals your lack of self-confidence.

Being obese isn't beautiful, being a woman is beautiful. We need to teach our children that being healthy is beautiful, being fit is beautiful. Yes I agree that we are all born different shapes and sizes and that is the beauty of the world but obesity is far from being beautiful.

Why do american people think that being fat is socially acceptable? They should not embrace this condition and be proud of it. And no, the fat won't be beautiful ever. Pop culture these days, make us believe that it's OK to be fat. It's ridiculous. There is only one exception: when you're fat because you have somekind of disorder.

If he was so set on challenging the beauty stereotypes, why did he Photoshop the hell out of their skin? Photoshopping and airbrushing are a huge part of what;s wrong with how people perceive themselves and others.

I think that 90% you speak of, applies to most women in general, not just your version of "overweight".... I've got skinny/fit friends that have just as many body issues as my thick/curvy/heavy set friends. Body dis-morphic disorder is a real thing.

Instead of flower petals, why don't they pose on a bed of candy wrappers and soda cans? After all, isn't the point to challenge traditional notions of beauty?

We shouldn't be telling these obese women that they're beautiful. They should be told they're unhealthy, fat, and need to do something about it. Just because people want to stuff their faces with junk food and be lazy doesn't mean we need to change what's considered beautiful. They need to change, not us. This is gross!

Obesity isn't healthy. Neither is being severely underweight. Society is full of followers trying to be way too PC these days.... it's not sexy at all.... also, if this pictorial is to embrace all that omen are why do they all have flawless skin?

Obesitiy is not sexy/nice/beautiful nor acceptable. Obesity is wrong and not cool at all. Now repeat it several times till you realize it properly.

There is only one exception: when you're fat because you have somekind of disorder.

what's to celebrate about the woman in this group that range from fat to morbidly obese. There is nothing beautiful about weight related disease and I don't understand why anyone would want to promote obesity.

Agree with that !!! I even would say that if it shows women with morbid obesity, then why doesn't he show women with any other handicap (like one leg missing or Down syndrom or anything else ??!).

I nearly threw up after I went through these. How can you find fat beautiful? It's a distortion and disgrace to the human body. It's not natural in order to be beautiful.
