Blind Persian Cat Gets A Second Chance In Life After Being Rescued From A Dirty Pet Shop Where She Lost Her Sight
Interview With OwnerMeet Moet the blind Persian cat who has become an internet sensation and a social media star ever since she was rescued from horrible neglect. The 6-year-old cat was adopted by Emily Shotter who found her in an animal shelter in Oman in 2014 and gave the fluffy cat a new forever home.
Moet had been born to an unlicensed breeder and lost her sight due to neglect at a ‘pet shop.’ She had been left in a dirty cage with no food, no water, no bed, and no toys which is why this abandoned cat got sick and went blind. Fortunately, this story has a happy ending.
“Moet is a bit of a diva and a sassy girl. While she's generally very sweet-natured, this blind cat hates to be bored and will squeak (not meow) for attention incessantly!” Emily the owner of this adorable cat told Bored Panda. The cat was rescued, vets removed what was left of her eyes, and saved her life. Emily met Moet 6 days after her surgery. That’s when she decided to take the Persian cat in and the two eventually ended up living together. Now, some people are calling Moet the most gorgeous cat ever. You can’t deny that she has a beautiful white coat.
Now, Moet gets spoiled and lives like royalty. Emily meownages Moet’s online store and donates all of the profits to help stray cats and dogs in Oman via a volunteer group called Omani Paws. Emily currently lives in Oman but she is from Nottingham and plans to be back there at some point.
“If I'm ever on the phone… well, nightmare." Emily told Bored Panda more about how Moet tries to get her attention.
"She doesn't like me speaking to others, so the squeak-meow gets voiced loudly and without a break. And in fact, when I'm on work video calls or in virtual meetings, she can typically be heard in the background. I never know whether to laugh or apologize!” Emily said.
“Anyway, I guess because she can't see, she gets bored more easily, so lots of playtime is a must. Moet loves her food and her favorite treats are Thrive freeze-dried treats and Nutripockets. She also loves to go out in the garden, which I've had fully enclosed for her safety.”
Emily started posting photos of her gorgeous Persian rescue just two years ago, in 2018. Since then, her following has grown immensely. Moet now has over 52k fans on Instagram, nearly 10k followers on Facebook, and over 36.9k supporters on Twitter.
However, the cat isn’t just a photography meowdel—she’s starred in plenty of adorable online videos, too. Have a look through her video library on YouTube and TikTok.
Moet... Ambassador for cats against abandonment due to Covid fears... Best photo for me... Txx, Emily💞💕💖
Moet used to live with her two other cat sisters. Unfortunately, Lily passed away and went to cat heaven in February 2020. So now it’s just Moet and her sister Luna, who was the first one to be adopted by Emily. Moet is very energetic, enjoys playing a lot, and sometimes has to tease Luna to get her to join in.
Emily confirmed to Bored Panda that Luna was her first rescue cat in Oman and was adopted from the same vets that she got Moet from. “Both ended up at Al Qurum Veterinary Clinic, who do amazing work with strays and abandoned or injured animals. They had taken Luna in—she was abandoned and I'd seen her on their Facebook page and been lured in. Moet was saved by them also as they nursed her back to health and removed her poorly eyes to save her life. They're absolutely amazing and do so much in Oman.”
She added that the volunteer group that she’s a part of, Omani Paws, has been lobbying the government for years to implement animal welfare legislation. “There is some, but it only applies to farm animals and not pets. We desperately need this. So far, the group has had no luck, but the efforts will not stop and in the meantime, the group and supporters do a huge amount to help out animals—relying on donations. Plus Moet donated 100% of her book and store profits to the group.”
I admire Emily's restraint. I might be the mom carrying Moet around with me in a baby carrier.
How many cats do you know who have gorgeous curly whiskers like mine? I've been told they were gorgeous. I'm not at all vain. It's not vain when you really are stunning.
She might be missing teeth, but whenever I see a cat yawn, the teeth remind me of how sharp they are!
Who knew a cat with no eyes would be as cute or cuter than all her brethren.
There is always Hope fur the Kitties of Oman - thank mew fur all your hard work Moet & Mum 💖😻💖 lots of love from Princess @Betty_Boo_Kat 🌈 xxx
Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos of a very special furbaby. She is so gorgeous.
She is the most interesting cat in the world. "When I drink, I drink Voss water, chilled, from a Moet & Chandon bottle."
Moet is so beautiful, so beautifully photographed. She makes my heart yearn. Thank you.
Beautiful kitty. I feel like the vets did a really good job cosmetically with her eyes, and maximized her chance of getting adopted.
