We've all seen a red fox and maybe even the white Arctic one, but only a few of the lucky have spotted a black fox in the wilderness. The vixen, commonly known as a silver fox, is a melanistic form of the brown animal. And if you're wondering what 'melanistic' means, it is basically the opposite of albinism when dark-colored pigment melanin is developed in the skin, thus making fur of these vixens black. Melanism not only can be seen in foxes but also a wide range of other animals.
Through the experiment of fox domestication held in Russia since 1595, the silver foxes were bred together, so that the melanism will show in each litter of fox puppies. After some years of such breeding, the trait of black color now stays with every fox generation, and these foxes are also known as the Siberian fox type.
The wild silver fox, similar to the brown, has been favorited by many folklore tales, always portraying an intelligent and wise being, such as the one in Achomawi myth of world creation. Nowadays, the term 'silver fox' is used to describe handsome older men, who have started to show gray in their hair. Pretty appropriate, right?
Below, we've gathered a compilation of these cute foxes shown not only in a domestic environment but also captured by wildlife photography. So scroll down and be prepared for the most adorable fox photos!

Load More Replies...So very beautiful. And beauty this precious must be protected from people who know better but don't care.
We had a black fox in the neighborhood for about two years, but then some idiot published a picture of him in the paper and, shortly thereafter, he was gone. I guess their pelts are worth a lot.
This is a black fox but not a colour morph of a red fox. It's an the normal colour phase of an Arctic fox as the photographer stated. Arctic foxes are only white in winter. If they were white in summer, they'd be an easy target for their predators.
I was thinking it looked more like an arctic fox, shape-wise, but I'd forgotten the little arctic cotton balls were dark during the summer. Thanks for the knowledgeable post!
Wonderful photos. Thanks so much for sharing them! --Karen Eide Rawling (North Carolina, USA)
Just saw one last night, November16, 2020 in Durham, NC, around 8 pm. It walked right by, less than 10 ft away without noticing me, as I was hunched down (watching a small snake on a corner of my house, by my driveway) and wearing a navy hoodie. I did not dared to move, not even blinked, as I knew it was a very rare sighting. I am a biologist.
Dude! Black Fox are so totally extremely incredibly amazing! Black Foxes are so deeply exactly the spitting image of a Black Wolf look-a-like & yet, they are foxes… incredibly amazing & beautifully radiant. Wonder if the Black Foxes are Black Wolf-Fox hybrid? But also… Guess what? To my incredible amazement & shock & awe surprise! Ever since I was finally able to start my own family genealogy research & study & study with each & every passing day of digging deeper & deeper into the truth of my family, not only have I discovered that I have deep Cherokee blood, roots and lineage though my father, who is full blood Cherokee and through my mother, who is half Cherokee & who’s biological maiden last name is Hummingbird & not only a am I blood related to & a direct descendant to many Chiefs, Warriors, Leaders & Medicine men/women through both of my parent’s families, but it is through my father’s family that my biological surname actually is Blackfox.
The fox's eyes are even more piercing contrasted with the snow... incredible shots
What do you think there Pups will maybe look like When maybe there …. Together….?
This is amazing. This breed of fox is beautiful. You are amazing . Just beautiful photography.
(S)he's hunting. They can here the tiny sounds of mice and other live creatures under the snow. That's when they pounce.
I so love to watch them do this!! It's amazing to watch them jump up and then disappear almost to their hind legs upside down!
Would just that much russet qualify it to be called a CROSS FOX, or would the "normal" coloration have to be more widespread? Either way, it's an amazing "look".
My cat's name is Silverbelle. This beautiful soul is a Silverbelle...or boy.
True, obviously a "cutout", but I'm not certain whether it was color-altered. It might have just been a poor decision re. a real silver fox photographed somewhere unattractive like a parking lot or even a dump.
This is amazing! I didn't even know this was a thing until now lol. Their eyes especially stand out to me, making them even more beautiful
This week my 4 Chihuahuas chased a very large fox out of my garden. It cleared a 3ft. Garden fence. It had a black back. I didn't get a good look at its face only enough to say it had the sharp snout of a fox plus it's brush of a tail which was also black.. My Chihuahuas after as one for which I am glad. Hate to think what would have happened if not. My neighbour says she has seen a normal video with at least 3 cubs on her lawn.
