Black Dogs And Cats Are Last On The List For Adoption, I Want To Change That By Taking Beautiful Portraits Of Them
Black dogs and cats get a raw deal when it comes to being unwanted. Ending up at a shelter is bad news for any animal, but black critters are the least likely to be adopted and if they are lucky enough to be chosen by an adoptee, they will have waited for the longest.
I've done a bit of research on this and there seem to be four major reasons that black cats and dogs are last on the list for potential adoptees - firstly, they don't look good in animal photography shots (I think these images disprove that point) which is tragic if you want to take over Instagram with your new pet (repeatedly smacks forehead against the wall), secondly, black dogs can look intimidating and aggressive, thirdly, black cats are superstitiously unlucky (or should that be stupid-stitiously) and lastly, they are a bit plain and boring to look at. What. Evs.
So, because I'm a fan of championing the underdog (and cat), these pet portraits are my PR stunt to show that black dogs and cats are far from boring. I have of course used some creative license with the descriptions (aside from Casper who really did try to wear a feather boa) because, like a publicity-hungry Kardashian, I'll do anything to get the animal shelter inhabitants the attention they deserve. I've even made a book about shelter dogs which you can find here.
All the adorable animals in this series have been safely adopted/rescued and are now living it up in loving family homes, just in case anyone is wondering.
My Googling did reveal an interesting tip for shelters looking to encourage people to adopt their 'boring' black dogs and cats - place them with dogs and cats who are wearing alternative colored outfits. Apparently, if there's one black dog amongst a run full of brown dogs, he's most likely to be selected. Make them stand out. Apparently, humans are a bit partial to clever marketing and fancy packaging.
Thankfully the dog and cat moms and dads who brought their precious rescues to the studio for beautiful photos selected their creatures based on their super personalities. The exception to this rule (there's always one) is DOGG. He was picked up at the side of the road, called 'Dog' because he was only going to be a foster but then he changed his name to D O GG and refused to leave.
Shelters worldwide often euthanize black dogs and cats more frequently purely because they know they are going to be more difficult to re-home. Some don't even get a chance to meet their forever family. Heartbreaking.
Changing perceptions amongst potential adopters as well as using clever 'marketing' tools to make them stand out seems to be the key.
The general public (worldwide) needs to be educated about the sterilization of pets to reduce the number of unwanted critters running around. Many of the stars I snapped were accidental arrivals (don't tell Truffle) and whilst they are unbelievably loved, another critter will have not been so lucky. It's a numbers game, one that must be reduced by getting cats and dogs 'fixed' before more accidental babies arrive.
Potential dog owners also need encouragement to adopt. There are a whole bunch of misconceptions about shelter dogs and cats. Sometimes they can be difficult, sometimes they take a while to settle, sometimes they require extra TLC and a behaviorist, but mostly they don't. All shelter pet parents will tell you that the love you get in return is 110% worth it. All the shelter pet parents I talk to who have bought a dog or cat previously tell me that they will never, ever buy a dog again because their rescued friend has changed their life for the better.
Have you got a black rescue dog or cat who has added immeasurable joy to your life and perhaps relieved you of some furniture or curtains? Tell me about them and include a photo in the comments below.

Echo
Small. Cute. Master manipulator.
Merlin
Lost his eye whilst on a secret mission for MI5. Keeps requesting a monetary allowance for a diamond-encrusted patch. Keeps being denied. Has put in an order with Cartier and is going to expense it.
Guinness
Judgemental as all hell. Found living under a trailer but is in no way trashy.
Merlin
An enthusiastic advocate for the legalization of The Nip. Might have had some before the shoot.
Gabriel
Insisted on a head shot only because he's still trying to get bikini ready.
Truffle
Part of an 'oopsie' litter but insists that he's full pedigree. Still thinks this shoot was for Country Life magazine.
God makes no mistakes. Truffle belongs at the palace with baby Archie :)
Jessie
As crazy as she looks. Once used a set of toddlers as skittles. Claims it was a total accident.
Maya The Mexican
Won't make eye contact until you've downed four tequila shots and said 'Xoloitzcuintli' correctly. Good luck.
Mia
Weighs 50kg, thinks she's a lap dog. Can take out a couch once she breaks into a gentle trot.

Toby
Has a fetish for sitting on velvet chairs. His tongue isn't the only thing he lets hang out.

Pronounced 'D' 'O' "double G' as in Snoop. Impossibly cool. Fan of hip hop.
Red
Yes, that is paint on his ear. Yes, this is his last ever modeling gig.
Grace
Only wears Gucci. Anxiously waiting for a Net-A-Porter delivery that's taking forever to arrive.
Arizona
Didn't stop talking throughout the shoot. Also has paint on her ear. Also fired.
Bentley
Reserved at first. Secretly a HUGE Madonna fan. Has all her albums.
Nancy
Slightly needy, snorer of note. Sheds so much that her mom now dresses like Batman.
Pest-O
Celebrated her tenth birthday just before the shoot. Her official age, however, is four and a half. She's waiting for an appointment with her stylist.
I have had three black cats! Currently have one of them, and a black horse! Love them forever and a day!
My two – Maggie and Cody. Both rescues. Adopted because black fur-kids are not favored and right when their time was almost up. More love you could not ask for! Cody-Maggi...dcd371.jpg
They're all beautiful in their own way. Thank you for sharing and trying to make a difference in the world. :)
My little Nunca was rescued from a shelter in Costa Rica. She was six and no one wanted an older dog. She was mixed in with several big dogs called the 'unadoptables.' She is now about 16 years old and has lived in four countries and visited a few others with me and our other rescued street dog, Oso. She is the sweetest funniest little dog and full of love. We had a gorgeous black cat that we adopted from Spain and came back with him to Finland. Big personality, adored mum, tolerated us rest. It would have never survived in Spain, they didn’t even have the guts to pick him up in the shelter. The first year was rough but he lived to be almost 18 years. We miss him.
I love my black cat. He's my best friend. The shelter told me no one wanted him because black cats are bad luck. He has brought me only good luck and snuggles. He's super affectionate and cheerful. Bless him.
My response to learning Black Dogs are less adoptable.... 17799231_1...971f07.jpg
Cute AH, especially those eyes. Picked her from the streets last summer. 53034439_4...944c49.jpg

This superstition about black animals is ridiculous. These are my pups, both are adopted. IMAG1951-5...4e725c.jpg
I never got why black cats & dogs fall through the cracks. My black animals have the most personality and loyalty. The cats defy every cat stereotype & are dog-like co-dependent. Not to mention, their fur doesn't show on my black clothes or grey couch.
I've never heard this thing about black dogs not getting adopted. That's crazy! I don't care what color an animal's fur is. I've had a black lab mix, a black Shepherd, and now I've got a black dachshund. I also don't care about an animals breed. I've heard that mutts are sometimes hard to adopt out because people want a dog that looks "pure bred". I've had several mutts and they've all been wonderful! People who only want certain types are missing out. All dogs are awesome! P.s. I love cats too, but I'm allergic (I pet them anyways, but then I have to go take a Benadryl).
I don't understand why?!? Black and white animals are beautiful too!! I've had my share!!
So cute! I have an adorable black dog named Loki (he's fit to his name) and he has one white sock, three white paws, and the tip of his extremely curly tail is white. His tail only curled once he got to his foster mom when we adopted him at an adoption event. He was adopted once before from the foster mom but returned. He is a rescue dog from I believe Arf. I know this is a lot to read. Sorry I just love my black pupper!
People are absolute idiots! Black is so beautiful! Also, black animals are usually healthier! Really, the only bad thing about their colour is how they would deal on an extremely sunny day. When I was looking for a dog, I wanted to adopt a younger, small or medium-sized black one. Unfortunately, pet rescue in my country is poorly developed compared to most European countries, so I would've known very little about my potential companion. Finally, as a person who prefers stability, I decided that my first dog will have to be a pure-bred one until I get to know the field better and then I could try rescue dogs. I wanted a tricolour female Pembroke corgi, for both corgis are rarer than painites were I live and I still craved for something unique. Destiny is funny though, so now I have a red oversized male named Argus. :)
They're last on the adoption list? That's so sad. My first choice of dog has always been a black dog.
Had two black cats with emerald green eyes till they were stolen. Absolutely heart broken as they were rescues felt really bad ever since
I've had three black cats--two were completely black--and a black dog. They were all fluffy love bugs.
thank you so much for showcasing the beauty of black fur. i never understood why people wouldn't want one. i specifically went to find a black cat when i went to the humane society and then i was lucky enough to have a black stray cat pick me.
Black Rabbits get an unfair reputation, too. These animals are beautiful! Rescue-Adopt-Neuter!
Presently on my fourth black cat in 24 years (Mary, Ringo, Lucy, and now Jack---their lives all overlapped) and every one of them is/was just the sweetest little love of my life. Superstition be damned; black cats and black dogs are sweeties you will miss knowing if you pass up a chance to adopt them!
I have 3 house panthers that have been rescued and I purposely got them because I knew people didn't want black cats. Just the most beautiful and regal looking creatures who are just as goofy and sassy as their striped and spotted furriends
People who hate on black fur have never seen it in direct sunlight. It is just super pretty!! And who wouldn't want a miniature panther roam their hallways? I'm so happy with my black kiddo and I wouldn't trade him for anything ò_o9 Learn how to take photos you stupid instagram people!
The same beautiful Midnight cat the day that we got her. 431827_515...ed8276.jpg
Our beautiful Midnight cat who was found in the middle of the street in a box covered with barbed wire when she was less than 6 weeks old. She stole our hearts the day we met her, and 6 years later we have no regrets. Day-One-2-...be4670.jpg
We've adopted two black kitties in our time... although technically one of them adopted us, since he just moved in and started sleeping between us on our bed! Puddims (the one who adopted us) was the love of our lives and has been sorely missed these past four years. Midnight, his sister, was found in the middle of a street in a box covered in barbed wire when she was not even 6 weeks old. All it took was for us to hold her to know that she was ours.
I have a totally white dog, a totally black cat, and four different hamsters, and I love taking pictures of them. I also love taking pictures of the sky, and, weird enough, ice. The bubbles in it sometimes look so cool!! iice-5ce49...b747c8.jpg
All these cats and dogs are beautiful. I'm happy they all got a home and the love they deserve.
Her Grace Benita, aka as the feline Josephine Baker! BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL! Benita-5ce...03054c.jpg
This is my fierce, very black Benita, aka as Josephine Baker of cats! Benita-5ce...8cb42a.jpg
This picture shows more white than usual, but she is very dark all over and we can't imagine what our life would've been like without her. She even has her own facebook page...@IamLilyApricot :) Lily-Apric...05375d.jpg
Many rabbits at rescues and shelters run into the same hardships. Black or albino rabbits tend to sit in shelters sometimes years longer than their more colorful friends. We have two black mini-rex rabbits named Vinny and Velvet, brother and sister, that came to stay with us after their cinnamon colored brother found his adoptive home and they did not. IMG_0500-5...fea902.jpg
Stayed in military housing in CA a few years ago, we had our black cat with us (pre-authorized). Cleaning staff REFUSED to go in the room because of the black cat. They were all of a particular nationality, I'll leave it at that. We still laugh about the horrific cursed monster we brought into their midst.
My all time favorite cats and dogs are black. Beautiful photos! So glad they've all been adopted!
What lovely photos, i would take them all home if could, it hurts my heart to think of any animal without a forever home. Me and the wife have made a pledge though, after our current canines pass on we will only adopt older rescues, as nice as having puppies is, we need to give our time to the older good boys and girls, we don't have kids so plenty of time for them.
Black animals are routinely euthanised because they are black. Adopt the beautiful creatures!
Black animals are boring? What the hell is wrong with people? They're not decor.
in a documentary I watched black cats are usually owned by teenaged witches and can speak English sooo I see why not a lot of people buy them. Not bc they don’t want them but they don’t fit the qualifications
I find this so hard to believe. The times I have adopted a pet, I didn't see black. I saw it's personality.
Black on black background? Are you going for the funeral look? And why black and white pics? Takes the life out of the picture in this case. Nothing artistic about it, just dead eyes.
