Two years ago, a white woman went viral after a video was uploaded to the Internet showing her calling the cops on a few black folks for simply having a barbeque. Just a month or so later, another white lady made the headlines when she threatened to call the police on an 8-year-old black girl for selling water without a permit.

Eventually, these racist episodes inspired LA-based artist Obi Arisukwu to create a satirical comic.

“This comic strip may be the only comic I’ve made that dealt with racism,” Obi told Bored Panda. “It was ridiculous how many more [similar] videos popped up of white people calling the cops on black people for doing harmless things like entering a neighborhood pool or operating a kid’s lemonade stand on the sidewalk.”

According to the artist, the worst part about these videos is that they both showed how some white people viewed black folks as unworthy of occupying the same space as them and that the same white people were willing to weaponize the police as their personal bodyguards to make their point.

Sadly, recent events are proving that the strip is still relevant.

“The reason I said nothing has changed is because of the recent video with Amy Cooper, the white woman who called the police on Christian Cooper, the black man, who was bird watching,” Obi explained.

Arisukwu is referring to a verbal dispute in Central Park that might have gone unnoticed as the city — just like the rest of the world — has been preoccupied with the coronavirus pandemic.

However, birdwatcher Christian Cooper pulled out his phone and captured Amy Cooper calling the cops to report she was being threatened by ‘an African-American man’.  He then posted the recording on Facebook and his sister shared it on Twitter, sparking a discussion on racism.

Sadly, it’s still relevant

Because of these very recent events

Here’s the video

So, here are the facts: both Amy Cooper and Christian Cooper (no relation) were in Central Park’s Ramble, a wooded area, on Monday morning. Christian was bird-watching and Amy was walking her dog.

The New York City Parks Department requires that dogs have to be leashed in the Ramble, since the plants and wildlife in the area are cultivated and maintained for the public to enjoy. This means that Amy Cooper was violating that rule by letting her dog roam around off-leash (she later told CNN she knew it was against the rules).

Christian Cooper asked her to leash her dog (he said he did it calmly but according to Amy, Christian was yelling at her). As their conflict escalated, Christian started recording it, and you can hear who is yelling and who is being calm and polite. It’s Amy being the unreasonable one.

Amy later explained that she was alone in a wooded area when Christian came out of the bushes, and it freaked her out. She refused to leash the dog and according to Christian’s account on Facebook, he told her, “Look, if you’re going to do what you want, I’m going to do what I want but you’re not going to like it.”

“I didn’t know what that meant. When you’re alone in a wooded area, that’s absolutely terrifying, right?” Amy told CNN.

Christian then called out to the dog and offered it dog treats. According to him, this is an effective strategy to get dog owners to leash their dogs.

Amy then stated that what Christian Cooper said had been a polite request turned into a conflict. As some reporters pointed out, that’s quite strange for someone who is scared for her life.

In return, Christian started recording, and the rest is history.

It got the lady fired and she lost her dog, too

Police said that by the time they responded, both of them were gone.

In the fallout, investment firm Franklin Templeton quickly announced it had fired Amy Cooper, saying, “We do not tolerate racism of any kind.”

A group called Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue said it had custody of her dog for the time being. The pet could be heard coughing in the video after she clenched it by the collar with its front legs off the ground.

“One would think that after the original Permit Patty video and the many other viral videos that came after, these white people who tend to call the cops on harmless black people would’ve learned by now on why that’s not a good idea,” Arisukwu said. “As a black man, it angers me. As a logical human being, it’s downright perplexing.”

However, the artist is happy — and most importantly relieved — that Christian Cooper was able to walk away with his life. “Too many of my brothers and sisters have been wrongfully murdered due to racism. The most recent names of those we’ve lost are Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd.”

“We need justice,” Arisukwu added. “We need change.”

Why no one is talking about the fact, that calling cops can be life threatening. They are like assassin service in some dictatorship country or what? Who gives them right to harm other citizen at all? What kind of twisted coutry it is?

I agree. In the US even if there was reason I would really hesitate to call the cops on any black people. They might wind up dead!

As an European, I also do not get why "African American" is even mentioned in the video. What really infuriates mevis how she treats the dog. It would protect her from real danger, but she treat it like a piece of fashion.

She is chocking the dog, only a sharp tug of the leash should be used to discipline a dog, and only when it is attacking a human being. She isn't using a leash, the dog was not doing anything wrong.

I know - that poor dog didn't do a damn thing wrong and that is what she does to some creature she is supposed to love? Is supposed to be so concerned gets exercise? As for the rest of her appalling behaviour - yeah she felt so 'threatened' she went charging up to this poor man and got so close he had to ask her to back off! Then really acted up a storm while on the phone. Repugnant human. I am so glad he got all this recorded.

I'm a Chinese and I now how much racism matters in schools, it's basicaly like a virus spreading to one student to another, but it first started with the parent, if you are a racist person and you spread it to your kids, the kid is going to start to spreading the rascim to other kids, witch results in alot of racism. This is not only with Chinese too , others like black people will also be targeted. Once ,a kid started looking weirdly at my when I'm coughing, i'ts a good thing the kid's mom said sorry to me and scold her kid.

The whole thing infuriates me. It should never happen. That woman should never be allowed in the park again, or own a pet. All that being said, can we please use some other name? My name is Karen. I'm a nice person. But I am now having conversations with people on the phone and the minute they hear my name they actually just "turn me over" to their managers, and treat me like c**p.

my mom is currently dog-sitting her friend's dog, Daisy, and within the first hour, when we hadn't even taken her home yet, SHE DRAGGED DAISY BY THE COLLAR AND PICKED HER UP LIKE THAT JUST TO TAKE A PICTURE. JUST TO TAKE ONE PICTURE. and when we (my sister and i ) told her not to do that, she just smiled at us and was like" what? it's not harming the dog" surprisingly, she is still allowed to dog-sit Daisy, or at least claim that she's taking care of her while we're ( again, my sister and i )the ones filling up her water bowl, looking up what good for dogs to eat, taking her on walks, ect.

I would have loved for the author to also discussed how Mr. Cooper (the man who the woman said was "threatening" her) not only forgives her, but mentioned the threats that she is receiving: "I am told there has been death threats and that is wholly inappropriate and abhorrent and should stop immediately," Christian Cooper said. “I find it strange that people who were upset that ... that she tried to bring death by cop down on my head, would then turn around and try to put death threats on her head. Where is the logic in that?” he said. “Where does that make any kind of sense?” FYI: She also did surrender her dog back to the rescue group which she got him from. Source: https://www.click2houston.com/news/national/2020/05/27/christian-cooper-is-asking-people-to-stop-making-death-threats-against-the-woman-who-called-the-cops-on-him/

What pissed me more about the story, is that this b***h tried exactly to cause the cops racist reaction by calling 911, tell she felt threatened and hungup, even didn’t wait for the cops to arrive and explain what actually happened, showing two times idiot, because she called with her cellphone probably thinking she was invisible, and the reason why her geolocation and device are immediately available are exactly to locate at their best a real call for help. This is a crime itself, calling emergency when you’te not in danger, but the fact making it even worse is that she tried exactly to take advantage of the dispute opponent ethnicity, and this could be leading to dramatic conseguences. Probably having found none, the cops didn’t look into it any further. Just for those two actions alone, she would face conseguences in any law system, exactly for the reason that a patrol was sent after her help request, taking off from a possible real one.

To all US American black (and Mexican and any other non white) people: how you are treated in the US is NOT the norm in the world. I live in Germany and we do not make any difference in skin color. We might stare at you, but thats just because we are insufferably curious. We do not ask your race in forms, our Police do not harass you (side note: even our Prison seem like Resorts compared to the USA). Just watch videos on youtube of black Americans coming to Germany, if you don't believe me.

It was pretty ironic that she was on the phone making up a story about how the lives of she and her dog were being threatened, while she was in the process of choking her dog to death. I mean, we can see and hear that the dog is CLEARLY in DISTRESS!. Trying to bark, escape her hold, twisting around. If we saw that in a movie there would have to be a disclaimer that no animals were hurt, that it was a trick of the eye. But she is not just threatening the dog's life, but actively killing him! I wonder what made her finally stop.

Cops in the US have something called "qualified immunity". From Federal Law Enforcement Training Center: "Qualified immunity is designed to protect all but the plainly incompetent or those who knowingly violate the law. Law enforcement officers are entitled to qualified immunity when their actions do not violate a clearly established statutory or constitutional right." From reality: AND WHEN THEIR ACTIONS DO.

This is even more apt looking at what is happening in Minneapolis, Minnesota, near where I live. For those of you who don’t know, an African American man was killed by a police officer. His name was George Floyd. A video shows him gasping for breath on the floor as a policeman puts his knee on his neck, choking him. He was pulled over an cuffed on suspicion of passing a counterfeit bill, and he was murdered, seemingly for being black. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey was in tears in a press conference, calling for this to end. From my understanding, four police officers that were involved have been fired. People have been protesting, not only in Minneapolis but in other cities around the country, and riots have broken out. People have clashed with police, who have used tear gas and non lethal force to defend themselves. Stores have been looted by rioters, and buildings have gone up in flames. The Minnesota National guard has been called in in an attempt to restore order.

For those from other countries, or those that don’t know, there is a culture of white officers killing young African American men, in many cases there has been proof that the officers were in no way threatened. It seems that in many cases, being black is a death sentence. Racism needs to end right now. We are all part of the human race. Grow up! Prejudice is something that needs to be put behind us. It’s my hope and my prayer that this is the last victim of violence against African Americans by police, and that this is the catalyst for change in the community. Sorry for the essay everyone. Edit: a couple of people have brought some things up, feel free to ask me questions or point things out and I’ll answer them or respond to the best of my ability

Why can't people just treat each other the same way they would themselves like to be treated?!?! That goes for all colour and creed! I'm from Zimbabwe brought up in a multi-racial environment at home & school. I now live in South Africa - not by choice! I'm sad to say racism exists here big time. The black & indian peoples are often worse than whites in their racism ... everywhere. At the hospitals is where that attitude really freaks me out! Black empowerment job selection should be left out of health institutions. Makes me soo mad & soo sad! We all have plenty of challenges just to survive a failed economy and serious corruption. Why do people have to compound all that by behaving soo badly? Be kind to one another!! I don't deny there is a bad element is every race. I've been on the receiving end of violent home invasion & robbery & ...That element in society will always be there, sadly. Look at countries like Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland & Scandinavia - they've got it right !

B***h needs to be in jail. Felony false police report. Misdemeanor hate crime. Misdemeanor animal abuse. Dude was kind of a douche for trying to steal her dog, he's not faultless, but it looks like he was just trying to make a point. So while it explains why the woman was set off, it doesn't excuse her rotten racist behavior.

I know that we are far from perfect in the UK - Stephen Lawrence comes immediately to mind, though that was white boys who murdered him, it still took a long time to get justice. But America seems to have made it a matter of pride in how badly they treat their PoC, both the police and the public. Obviously, it's not everybody, but it does seem systemic, permitted, and encouraged. Now the world is seeing it, again. Will anything change? Probably not with Racist in Chief in power, waving his own private army against anything he doesn't like. I don't know what the answer is.

Love it when they do the "I can't believe this would happen in America" song & dance. They elected a money-grubbing idiot, a huge % of population counts COVID-19 not being real/dangerous as 1 of many backward-science-is-a-lie beliefs, their 1st world healthcare system is rubbish - having 1 of the highest COVID-19 death tolls & it takes a black man getting murdered by a white man every couple of years to remind them they haven't really made any progress beyond ending slavery. Yet they want to be seen as a superpower, a beacon to the world when they go dark so easily? Whatever.

This is a good example of a racist white woman who feels threatened by the mere presence of a black man. Then there are racist black people who feel threatened by the Confederate flag. What's that flag going to do to them? In both instances, they are reacting to the way they have been raised. As long as parents teach their children to "feel threatened" by non-events, racism will flourish.

This is what I think about this whole situation: His race should have never been brought into the phone call because that situation could have ended tragically. However, I was raised to believe that if a situation wasn't actually threatening you then it was none of your business. He should not have said anything to her. However, I do believe that she should not be able to have a dog because she almost killed the dog. People need to mind their own business and people also need to learn how to follow the rules.

The notoriety of being a dumb trouble maker, is bad enough. The shame should kill anyone. Have her charged with A fake complaint, hurting her dog, and violating park policy. But to also lose her job? This is harsh. And I suggest she claim "mental illness".

Stringent punishment may be the only way to stop these racists abusing the police as their private assault team when they don't like being called out. I'm impressed her employer took the right action.

In the last month a 20 year old black man beat a 75 year old white man at a nursing home in Detroit, filmed it, and posted it on the internet. Not his first time beating up old white guys. AND, an 85 and 86 year old white couple visiting their son's grave in Delaware were gunned downed by a 29 year old black guy. NOT MUCH COVERAGE OF THESE INCIDENTS NOR MEDIA OUTRAGE? Why? Imagine if the races had been reversed, and 20-something white men killed elderly black folks....

FFS how stupid is this title? 2 years ago and things haven't changed! F**k me, I hope it was a teenager who wrote that. One, 2 years is nothing when it comes to societal values and two, to suggest society is racist is insane. It's not. Other than small fringes, it's only SJWs and the media that keep everything racially charged. They are the real racists. This simply disgusts me. This post contributes to it. You guys are determined to keep racism alive and well. It's so gross.

The dog park incident is basically "Permit Patty" in reverse. Someone breaking a minor local law and someone else making it their business to see the law enforced. the dog treats were a clever touch. The comic however, was racist toward white people. Much like how Nazi prop always portrayed Jews as shifty, untrustworthy, and greedy, the comic attempts to convince you that a large number of white people are racists who harass and harangue innocent starry-eyed black people. Yeah, racist jerks exist, but not all jerks are racist and if they are white, their skin color, or your perception of it, does not make them automatically racist.

To be honest. If you leave skin color out for a moment. And no need to discuss the fact she's a privileged pos. He was not acting all that normal either. Coming up out of the bushes, bird watcher or not, is suspicious behavior. Wanting to be right to the point were you make comments like "we'll see" and then proceeding to lure a dog with treats you carry even though you don't have a dog with you I straight up BS. I think these two people share more than a last name. They found each other just right. The only victim here is the dog.

Ironically, the Cooper's share more than their name, they are both entitled, overly dramatic egotists. Leash your dog, move on from each other, don't soft threaten a dog with a statement like you won't like what I do? They are both at fault for their behavior, involving the police is the craziest, but so is threatening a dog and it was a threat.

Obviously the way she acted is ridiculous and completely racist, but if someone had said 'you're not gonna like what I'm gonna do' while I was alone in the woods with them I'd be scared; it wouldn't matter what colour or sexy they were! I realise he meant it as in she wouldn't like him offering the dog treats, but why did he have to do that? Couldn't he have just told her the dog needed to be on a leash and when she answered back just carried on?! Is he the park warden?! Going around with dog treats in your pocket when you don't have a dog is weird AF in my opinion

SERIOUSLY??? The woman straight up LIES on the phone to the police while choking her dog - are you really going to believe her account of what he said before the filming began? He admits to the dog treats which he uses as a method to persuade owners to put their dogs on their leads. He might not be the park warden but why should they be allowed to flout the rules? It's hardly sinister or weird. In my local park I get fed up with stupid people not keeping their dogs on leads - a requirement from April to September due to young wildlife. These rules exist for a reason. She was also far from being scared - she went up to him in a very intimidating manner.

Now do a cartoon where a couple of black women at a Popeyes chicken tear the wigs off each other because one called the other a "ratchet a*s ho," since we're dealing in lazy stereotypes.

I wonder if all, white people remember, black people were slaves, do some research, er how families were torn apart, suffering, thousands were murdered, the end of slavery, was not the end of murder, police officers have murdered, countless black people, many were innocent, they shoot to kill, because, they are racist, Wish people who are racist, would read history, and walk a mile, in their shoes !!!

Poorpeople in america have much more incommon with each other than the rich corporate owners despite skin, origins , what ever. Some is exploiting race division for sinister gains, and siphoning away all the wealth created by millions of underpaid american workers on all levels. Racism is also a tool of control

Madguins screenshot Twitter post in the article abt feeling like they were in a third world country with a mask on made me have to comment. Haha I hope they're black. Would be hilarious that they have the same "better than you" mentality they get from whites. Americans really should just bond over all having delusions of grandeur.

I'm sorry there are people that have to live with this c**p daily, I have biracial grandchildren and I am afraid for them, calling the police for help is not always the solution, it can make things infinitely worse.

The dog was off leash in Central Park where all of the bird watchers are, this is not allowed for a variety of reasons.

That's like saying domestic violence will never end, until both sides stop.... One is a victim, one is not.

Yeah, well, I'll take my dog out for a nice, long walk in Harlem, or Morningside Park, and see how we do. PLEASE stop showing ONE side of racism. This got old years ago.

If she had been black, and the birdwatcher white, he'd have possibly shot her and got away with it. When will you stop accepting the truth and defending the white racists? ! You're actually saying, 'poor white folk' ?!?!

Except the woman made a point of reporting "an African American man," not a stranger who was making her feel threatened. If it were the latter, she'd just be a POS, not a *racist* POS.
