Forget Coffins – Organic Burial Pods Will Turn Your Loved Ones Into Trees

The idea of coming full circle and returning whence we came from is one that appeals to many of us, regardless of our faith (or lack thereof), and this is an idea captured perfectly by this beautiful new burial method developed in Italy. The Capsula Mundi project by designers Anna Citelli and Raoul Bretzel has developed an organic, biodegradable burial capsule that will turn the deceased’s body into nutrients for a tree that will grow out of their remains.

After being encapsulated in the fetal position, the deceased is buried and either a tree or tree seed is planted above their capsule. The project’s site already has a number of trees to choose from.

The project is currently only a concept because Italian law forbids such burials. If it were allowed to proceed, however, the project’s aim would be to create entire memorial parks full of trees instead of tombstones. And instead of destroying and burying wood for wooden coffins, we would, at the end of our lives, provide sustenance for new trees instead. And indeed, the idea that our loved ones and descendants could visit our tree, care for it and rest in its shade is truly a comforting one.

More info: capsulamundi.it | Facebook (h/t: aplus)

An Italian company came up with an eco-friendly alternative to coffins

Instead of visiting cemeteries, mourners will be able to visit sacred forests

Each client will be able to choose their favorite tree

The people buried inside the pods will become nutrients for their chosen trees

I love the idea, it somehow gives you the feeling that your loved one is still there :) way better than being stuck under the ground!

I love it simply because instead of cold hard stone symbolizing the memory of a loved one, you have a beautiful living thing!!!

I think it is a lovey idea, I have secondary stage 4 incurable breast cancer, which will eventually take me. I love the idea that my body will nurture something tangible that can be seen and touched. I would love to be a Weeping Willow Tree, they are my favourite, they have a mystical fairy like quality. I have fond memories of sitting under one at first school during the summer, for storytime. I am 100% on board.

It is a lovely idea, but I can't help but think of the space required if each body/person had its own tree. Many tree species require quite a spread to grow healthfully (wouldn't want the tree to die!). I like the idea of memorial forests, forests of native trees and shrubs in which remains are buried. You would likely give nourishment to a tree or two, but just as likely to an understory shrub or wild flowers.

I absolutely love this idea. I had always considered the most green way was to be cremated, thus not turning huge swathes of land into cemeteries. This ticks all the boxes for me. Going back to the earth and doing something to help repair the ozone layer and preserving other forests that would otherwise be cut down to turn into coffins. Brilliant idea - I hope it become attainable before my time comes.

I wonder if it could work in countries where trees are becoming threatened. Perhaps their government could invest in the project hence receive an income from it, employ people to protect it and benefit from more trees being grown. Am I being naive here? Love the idea, I would certainly go for it.

The tree nourishes on the skeleton not the entire body. The organs decompose into gasses and what is left of flesh are eaten by bugs and underground insects. The Skelton is what nourishes the ground and grows into a tree. So instead of an entire body , it is actually better to put cremation ashes into a biodegradable capsule.

A great idea. We all have been oxygen thieves while we have lived on earth so in death let us give something back to mother nature.

I'm already doing this but wondered if bonsai was a possibility. I'd need 3 and maybe one will survive.

I've been on board. I actually came up with the idea at the same time or before these people. Ugh. I should start copyrighting/patenting.

Still stuck underground and runs th risk of being destroyed in human error or malice or weather. BUT, still a better than put in cement

What if your consciousness somehow transfers to the tree? Perhaps if you are buried under the tree alive... lol

that's great just drop the "sacred" bit. we should respect life, including plants, without any mumbo jumbo stuff.

You could just choose not to be buried at all. Just let the animals eat you and when they c**p you out you become fertilizer for whatever

I think it's a great idea, instead of taking up space, we are helping the environment

Awesome idea and so fitting for so many of us. Not only do we nourish the tree, the tree then cleans the air and provides oxygen ;)

pick a tree that lives a long time so in a hundred years when no one cares anymore and the tree dies your history and no tree to remember

Great idea, but if a man speaks in the middle of this forest and there is no (living) woman to hear him, would he still be wrong?

It is a good idea. It would feel less sad somehow. But would all the trees look healthy and happy when ppl die after strong medication?

You could embed an rfid tag into the tree - 10m range - encapsulated in amber so non-toxic and they're passive - so no battery needed.

too hipster and unsafe. And would feel like cannibalism if the person ends up in a fruit tree.

What a cool idea. I don't mind my tree being cut down, just make something useful. Hope it's more it's more than firewood :)

You do realise if you had any experience with dead bodies you would in most cases have to break and snap them to fit..
