Man Always Babysits His Niece, But Refuses To Do So After She Calls Him A Slur Learnt From Her Dad

Man Always Babysits His Niece, But Refuses To Do So After She Calls Him A Slur Learnt From Her Dad

Many families have members who complicate everything with their toxic behavior. From bringing up unnecessary discussions to pitting people against each other – they always find a way to bring chaos.

Just like the OP’s brother-in-law. This man looks down on the author for working from home and doing household chores and childcare. While it’s already a problematic point of view, it got even worse when his 5-year-old started absorbing and expressing it as well, despite her uncle always caring for her.

More info: Reddit

Nearly every family has a problematic member, whom they tolerate despite them doing unpleasant stuff

This man has a very flexible work-from-home arrangement, allowing him to drop off and pick up not only his own kids but also his sister’s child from daycare

One day, he overheard his niece calling him the F-slur, which, it turns out, she learned from her dad

Apparently, her dad always refers to him this way, because he does chores and childcare, which makes him “not a real man”

The man demanded an apology from the girl’s parents, but was instead told he was overreacting, so from that point on, he refused to continue dropping her off and picking her up from daycare

The girl’s parents didn’t take it seriously, but when the time to drop her off came, they realized he was for real

They started continually berating him on the phone and even got the man’s mom on their side

So, the man started wondering — maybe he’s the problem?

The OP and his wife have two kids, 3 and 5 years old. Since he works from home with flexible hours, he gets a chance to drop off and pick up his kids from daycare while his wife goes to her office job.

Along with his kids, he also drops off and picks up his 5-year-old niece, Tracy. The man thinks it’s a great idea, as this way the cousins can spend more time together, plus he gets a chance to be a cool uncle – the one that cares for the kids but also is fun to be around.

Well, apparently not everyone thought he was so cool for doing this. One day, while the kids were watching Bluey, a TV show that is considered to be one of the best modern shows for kids, he heard yelling. His son was yelling “My dad’s not a girl!”, while his niece was yelling back “He is! He’s a [F-slur]! That’s like a girl!”

Granted, in reality, a different slur was used since it wasn’t in English, but the implication was basically the same.

This shocked the man, because how on Earth did his 5-year-old niece know this insult? He started explaining why it was a bad word, that she shouldn’t use it again, and that she should apologize for doing it in the first place.

Turns out the girl learned it from her dad, who used it in the context of describing the OP. In his eyes, the author is “a woman” or “not a real man” because he does household chores and childcare for both his kids and niece, plus his wife earns more money than he does.

His view that “real men” can’t do chores or childcare is the perfect example of sexism. Basically, in his mind, he ranks the OP as an inferior man, which manifests in his hostile language. While it’s not clear where gender stereotyping originated in this man’s head, it’s sad to see that it is slowly being inflicted on his daughter too.

Believing in gender stereotypes not only can negatively affect relationships but the person themselves too. For instance, they might feel unable to fully express themselves and their emotions, just to avoid being interpreted according to their imagined gender roles. So, by normalizing sexist behavior to his daughter, he might be dooming her later on.

At least her uncle took his time to explain to her why this kind of opinion was wrong. Also, after talking about it with his wife, he decided to demand an apology from his brother-in-law. But it wasn’t as easy to get it as one might have thought.

When the OP described the situation to his sister, she said that he was “being a drama queen” and instead of expecting an apology, he simply should deal with the fact that it is how her husband simply is. Sounds like the toxic “boys will be boys” excuse, doesn’t it?

The author didn’t like the fact that his sister didn’t stand up for him, so he let her know that from that point on he won’t be picking up his niece from daycare. Since the conversation happened on Friday, the couple had 2 days to figure out what to do with their daughter while they were working. The original poster wasn’t planning to take back this promise until he got an apology.

The workday came and he didn’t go to drop off his niece. His phone was blowing up with calls from his sister, but he ignored them until a few hours later. Instead of providing an apology, she went off about how she expected him to do the drop-off and he made her late for work, yada yada.

When the time came to pick the kids up, he, just as promised, left his niece to be picked up by her parents. He told the girl that he was fighting with her mom and when it was solved, he’d start picking her up again.

A bit later he got a call from his mom, who has a disability, who had to pick up her granddaughter and was having a hard time with her. Despite him expecting her to take his side, she took her daughter’s, also thinking that he overreacted.

Even later, the OP received a call from the sister’s husband himself. This man, instead of giving a simple “sorry”, went off about how the author is a [F-slur] and things like that – the opposite of fixing his behavior.

So now, the original poster, seeing that his desire for an apology pitted most of his family against him, plus seeing how sad his niece is that she can’t come with him, wonders – maybe he’s a jerk?

The people of Reddit didn’t think so. They understood where the OP was coming from and said that people who tolerate dudes like Nick (sister’s husband) are the problem – as long as they do, the Nicks of the world won’t change their behavior

Well, in the long run, hopefully at least Nick will realize the fault in his behavior and will start changing. Or maybe we and the post’s author are too naive.

The people in the comments told him that he is not at fault and that people who keep tolerating his brother-in-law’s toxic behavior are the problem not only in this case, but overall

"That's just how Nick is." This rationel has been used by toxic people for *centuries.* You don't get to call people horrible words + not get blowback, which is what sis + Nick are getting from OP. If I were OP I'd block Nick, sis, mom + anyone else who thinks it's ok to call OP a fa**ot. Sis + BIL got free childcare + they get to call OP names??? Not bloody likely!

The YTA guys are so dam stupid that they cant see that the sister mom and MOSTLY the brother in law are the ones punishing the kid because their egos are so fragile they cant even say " I am sorry " Because somehow it is manlier to never admit you are CLEARLY in the wrong... There is nothing manly or womanly(In the case of the pushover mom and sister) about that.

Of course, not. It doesn't affect his life in any way because he thinks that's women's work. It would never occur to Nick that he's equally responsible for getting his child to and from daycare. He's not going to apologize because his routine hasn't been disrupted.

NO NO NO! DO NOT ROLL OVER AND BE " THE BIGGER PERSON" ! DON'T BE A DOORMAT OR FALL FOR THE " BUT FAMILY" GUILT TRIP CARD! You teach people how to treat you. There is absolutely NO excuse for either one of their behavior and OP is right to stop helping people who disrespect him and walk all over them. A simple apology is not such a big price to pay to someone that you want to help from. YOU NEVER BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU. THEY DID. Actions have consequences. They have an awful lot of nerve expecting OP to help them after they decided to treat OP badly. " You know how this person is" doesn't excuse their bad behavior. The worst thing a person could do is offer themselves back up after someone treats them badly because you basically give them an open invitation to continue to do it or take advantage of you. Nick and the sister are going to smuggly behind your back call you a sucker and declare victory. You don't have to " keep the peace" . Block them for a while. They need to apologize for their actions or hire another babysitter. THEY are AHs . I always say if you act like an AH you get treated like an AH. They deserve to face the consequences. Even worse instead of apologizing, now they are doubling down and being nastier . Being bigger AHs. Tell them that " I'm not going to pick up the kid or be treated like a doormat" that's how I am.

If family mattered to Nick he wouldn't be calling his free childcare a bunch of slurs. Nick wants to stay a child, with the childish excuse of "that's just the way Nick is" Yes, its obvious Nick is a jerk. But why is anyone putting up with it? He sounds useless and worthless.

Even if Nick is an a-hole and won't apologize, his SISTER could. I have a feeling is his sister owned up to it and apologized herself, even if her a-hole spouse wouldn't, there's a chance something could have been worked out. Sister is way out of line.

Wow talk about an entitled, ungrateful group of asholes. Nick and Barb wanted to eff around and then cry about it when they found out. It doesn't work that way and OP is right to stand his ground. Personally after how he was treated after confronting his sis and bil, I wouldn't even want the fake ash apology. I think that the sister and mom are the biggest asholes in this scenario. Since Nick is a sad excuse of man/husband/father, he gets a pass for always being a jerk because that's just how he is, according to his wife and MIL, which only enables him. The sister and Mom should have backed up OP who has gone above and beyond to help out his sister and her family, not to mention all the time, money and aggravation he has saved them. I wouldn't help them anymore and maybe they will realize how much you're actually doing for them but unlikely. The kids unfortunately are suffering the consequences but maybe you can work out having a few playdates a month or something?

"This is just what Nick is like" - "And this is just how people respond to arseholes" It goes both ways. An important lesson a lot of adults still need to learn (and we need to teach our kids) is NOT to make excuses for s****y people. You still want to be friends with a c**t? Okay, just don't expect others to suffer for your poor choice.

Just so you YTA and ESH fuggnuts know, I am duty-bound to call you a bunch of f-words from now on since you seem to condone this sort of behaviour. Probably a bunch of Numbnut Nick's buddies in disguise. You think you can just call someone a slur and expect them to continue giving you a free service with no repercussions? Here's the biggest Dean Ambrose-NOPE for you! If OP's family wants to keep enabling Nick, they ought to be responsible for Tracy themselves. I agree, poor kiddo, but sometimes there will be casualties as long as a stand needs to be taken. At least OP is keeping Tracy in mind about the whole scenario and Tracy has been gracious enough to apologize, but until Numbnut Nick does the same, I hope OP sticks it to him and makes him pull up his "big-boy" pants for once and figure out the situation himself. People!!! >:-(

First of all, your brother in law is a small d__ked jealous boy and nowhere near the man you are. Real men don't validate their manliness off other men's lives. Secondly, your family is extremely entitled and in complete denial of their behaviour. At best, they have taken you for granted. At worst you have been scapegoated, taken advantage of and undervalued always. As for Tracey, the only people abusing this child are her parents and your mum. They're alienating her from wonderful influences in her life (you and your kids) and at the same time instilling horrible perceptions about people that she will carry with her throughout her life which will affect her interactions with people going forward. I'll bet Tracey goes home talking about the wonderful time she has at your place but that means nothing to her dad because, again, I'll bet he's jealous and resentful. You were right to discuss it with Tracey. Kids need both sides of the story in this situation. Stick to your guns

Anyone calling OP the AH can take a long walk off a short pier. "Just the way Nick is," my backside. There's no excuse for abusive hate speech that has literally been picked up by their innocent child. BIL, sister, AND mom can go kick rocks for awhile until they either pull their collective heads out of their asses and make amends with OP or they will lose not only the FREE DAYCARE PICKUP AND CHILDCARE but most likely all contact with some of their family.

[Warning - this is probably sexist or gender stereotypes or something] This "Nick" individual seems to be under the impression that being a "tough guy" or a "real man" is somehow related to being a dysfunctional, incompetent, child like imbecile who is entirely incapable of taking even basic care of himself and his surroundings, much less of serving any useful purpose in a home, a family, or to society in general. If his wife went on holida - if he "let" his wife go on holiday, we all know his sort - he'd be living in squalor, stinking as he's been wearing the same underpants for a week and "can't find" the toilet paper, dressed in dirty stinking clothes with more wrinkles than a bulldog, gained 10kg of pure fat from living on fast food... he thinks that being unable to function without an adult looking after him earns him pride and respect, and that all women are subservient domestic slaves. Somehow, in his malfunctioning mind, he can't see that his wife, the man he's attacking, and.. even his five year old daughter is more of a man than he'll ever be. He's an utter disgrace, an embarrassment.

This is what happens when you don't call people, especially family members, out on their c**p. I have an aunt like this and I got sick of everybody making excuses for her and I finally decided to play into one of her "it's not and argument it's a conversation" traps...you know, where they try to stir up s**t in the guise of a friendly conversation. I did try to tell her I'm not doing this today, this is not the day or the time but she kept poking....so I flipped it on her and OMG the yelling and the explicatives and the wishes of death upon me she did...I just kept drinking my beer and giving her thumbs up and was like I though this wasn't an arguement. Guess who doesn't get poked anymore or asked for anything for that matter....so peaceful.

People!!! >:-(

When they say, "He's a nice guy once you get to know him", what they really mean is, "He's an a55hole, but you'll get used to it."

Why is it always the a-holes who demand that the targets of their abuse "be the bigger person"? So they can be an a-hole without fearing consequences? Yeah, never let that slide.

The YTAs / ESHs never fail to disappoint at being so disappointing ... as far as the article, I could see this happening 20 years ago, but it's 2024 ... I think it's been more than 48 hours ... it's time to report Common Decency to missing persons ...

That little girl is on so much danger being raised by a man like that. And the mother is allowing it!

Pretty sad when the 5 year old is the most mature person in the family.

I assume the F + asterisks word is the same word Humphrey Bogart called Truman Capote after Capote defeated him in arm wrestling. Immediately after, Capote put Bogart on the floor.

It's a slur that is typically directed at gay men. I'm not familiar with the Humphrey Bogart and Truman Capote arm wrestling scenario. But the asterisks are covering up 'aggot'.

Not only are "Barb" & grandma enabling Nick they are normalizing his hate to Tracy which does her the disservice of pushing her to replicate that hate in her self. OP should ask Mom & sis if they really want Tracy to be a bigot when she grows up!

The reply to "That's just how Nick is" is "That's just how I am".

"Is this what you want your daughter to believe?" "Is your marriage what you want your daughter to see as an example?" "Are you okay with your daughter having to make excuses for her father's behavior?"

OP def NTA, but niece’s parents are. But honestly this is an example of where the RW hysteria over gender roles leads. It’s not about trans/gay so much as it is turning the gender roles back to 1890.

You should keep sitting your niece and tell her the truth. that his father needs your help to take careof his family because he's kind of dumb! ...if the sis and mum wanna enable that toxic behavior at least save the future generations from it. Teach em better

90% sister AH, 10% OP - because the kid is getting caught in the middle.

Then maybe Nick shouldn't have insulted OP in front of the kid if he didn't want her involved.
