Fargo
1996 | 1 hour 38 minutes | Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen
Starring William H. Macy, Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi
Fargo is a black comedy crime film following a story of a disappointed family man and car salesman, Jerry Lundegaard, and his path to total demise by ordering the kidnapping of his wife for a hefty ransom from her wealthy father. The plan goes very awry, and now it's the cue for Marge Gunderson, a heavily pregnant Minnesota police chief, to solve the crime. Frances McDormand's Marge is probably one of the most memorable characters in cinema, but that isn't the only good thing about Fargo - the story here is both unexpected yet realistic, the cinematography by the legendary Roger Deakins is spellbinding, and the touch of humor is of the absolute highest quality.
One Night In Miami
2020 | 1 hour 54 minutes | Directed by Regina King
Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge
One Night In Miami is a drama film marking Regina King's feature film directorial debut. The film is a fictionalized account of a story that happened on one remarkable night. It was the night when Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown gathered together to discuss their roles in the Civil Rights Movement and the cultural changes of the '60s. One Night In Miami is an affectionate and intelligent movie that has gained both the actors and the director, Regina King, praises from everyone who has watched it.
Lincoln
2012 | 2 hours 30 minutes | Directed by Steven Spielberg
Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn
Lincoln is a biographical historical drama with a screenplay loosely based on Doris Kearns Goodwin's 2005 biography Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. The plot here follows the last four months of Lincoln's life, focusing on his efforts to abolish slavery and the struggles caused by the raging Civil War. With Daniel Day-Lewis as the lead of the story, Lincoln is revived before your very own eyes to his witty, intelligent self. Add Spielberg's crafty directing, and Lincoln becomes an instant cinema classic.
Young Frankenstein
1974 | 1 hour 46 minutes | Directed by Mel Brooks
Starring Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman
Young Frankenstein is a comedy horror film and a parody of the classic horror movie genre, especially the various adaptations of Mary Shelley's 1818 Frankenstein. Here, a grandson of the infamous scientist is struggling to prove that his grandad wasn't as crazy as people believed. One thing leads to another, and he is invited to Transylvania to witness the process of a dead body's re-animation. Young Frankenstein is a silly movie in the best sense of the word - made with affection for the original and full of spoofs; it is by far one of the best horror comedies ever.
Train To Busan
2016 | 1 hour 58 minutes | Directed by Sang-ho Yeon
Starring Gong Yoo, Yu-mi Jung, Ma Dong-seok
Train To Busan is an action horror film where the events mostly take place on a high-speed train from Seoul to Busan. However, it isn't just the amazing views that you get to see through the train's windows but also a sudden zombie apocalypse unfolding and threatening the safety of the passengers. A real box office hit, Train To Busan might just be the best zombie movie ever - clever, original, and well-executed.
Raging Bull
1980 | 2 hours 9 minutes | Directed by Martin Scorsese
Starring Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty, Joe Pesci
Raging Bull is a biographical sports drama film adapted from Jake LaMotta's 1970 memoir Raging Bull: My Story. The movie depicts the story of LaMotta and how his temper and aptitude for violence led him to be one of the greatest boxers of his time while at the same time destroying his life out of the ring. Although by its release, Raging Bull was met with only lukewarm reviews, it is now considered Scorsese's magnum opus, one of the greatest movies ever made.
Manchester By The Sea
2016 | 2 hours 17 minutes | Directed by Kenneth Lonergan
Starring Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler
Manchester By The Sea is a psychological drama film where the protagonist of the story is a depressed and grief-stricken man who must take care of his teenage nephew after his brother's death. The topics here are quite grim - guilt, grief, PTSD, and dysfunctional families - but with the skillful directing by Kenneth Lonergan, you are somehow able to sit through this heartwrenching drama and take something elevating from it. And while Manchester By The Sea isn't an easy watch, it is a definite must-see film.
The Terminator
1984 | 1 hour 47 minutes | Directed by James Cameron
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn
The Terminator is a science fiction action film with now-California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as a cyborg assassin sent from 2029 to 1984 on a killing mission. His target is a woman whose unborn child will be the savior of humans. Thus, a soldier who's also from the future is sent to guard her against the Terminator. Watching The Terminator is like watching a comic book come to life - it's full of action amplified by a great story, terrific acting, and stellar directing. No wonder The Terminator is still holding its title as a legendary action movie even years after its release.
You Were Never Really Here
2017 | 1 hour 29 minutes | Directed by Lynne Ramsay
Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Judith Roberts, Ekaterina Samsonov
You Were Never Really Here is a neo-noir psychological thriller based on the 2013 novella of the same name by Jonathan Ames. The plot centers around Joe, a traumatized veteran, who is hired by a politician to find and rescue his daughter kidnapped by a human trafficking network. Sure enough, there's a conspiracy, and now Joe is faced with a very risky choice. It's a dark and suspenseful movie that won't give you a minute to breathe, but that's just how we like our thrillers!
Tangerine
2015 | 1 hour 28 minutes | Directed by Sean Baker
Starring Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor, Karren Karagulian
Tangerine is a comedy-drama film with a story following a transgender sex worker who discovers her boyfriend, a pimp, has been cheating on her. Although it is Christmastime and everyone is in a festive mood, the worker, Sin-Dee, wishes only to locate the two-timing boyfriend and mend her broken heart. Shot entirely on iPhone 5s smartphones, Tangerine has a tangible realism to it, a story that could, in essence, happen (or probably already did) to any one of us. And under its unconventional veneer, Tangerine is a brilliant old-fashioned comedy, one that suits any taste.
