Sometimes the world can seem like a pretty scary place. Other times, just the sheer volume of information is enough to make people resist casually searching for things or ideas. After all, most sites are unwaveringly aggressive in throwing words and provocative images at you, while other times things get lost in the deluge of “breaking news.”

I'll get downvoted, but I always have to point out that GPS is funded and operated through the US Defense Department (i.e., military). People like to complain about or mock the huge US military budget (and I'm not saying they're necessarily wrong), but those expenditures also pay for a number of civil public services and technology. Let the flaming begin.

As good and useful as GPS is it is causing wide-spread loss of geographic sense, especially among younger people. Without it they are often completely lost. They seem to lose the sense of automatically recording landmarks, distance, and direction and thus no longer have a geographic reference base in their minds. s

Through GPS itself, nothing. GPS satellites broadcast signals but do not receive signals back, so they don't 'know' what devices are using the signals. The apps on your phone, of course, are a different story.

The interesting thing about the GPS is that its satellites have to adjust and account for time dilation caused by being a bit further from the centre of the earth causing the satellites to be a few microseconds ahead. If that difference in time is not accounted for then data would be off by several kilometres
