Helium was detected because of its lines in the Sun's spectrum. Fun fact - there are still some lines in the Sun's spectrum that have not yet been identified because they've never been seen in spectra produced of Earth.

The way I discovered to learn this was to forcibly make myself take control of my night terrors. The unreality of the situation coupled with my being simultaneously awake and asleep made it a perfect training grounds, as that's basically what a lucid dream is (but without your eyes open).
