Once upon a time, indie games stayed underground, sometimes whispered about and praised on gaming forums by a niche of hardcore fans but rarely shining in the mainstream industry. Well, forget that: indie video games are taking over! With a slew of new titles released each month, there’s really something for everyone, including engrossing roguelikes, gorgeous puzzlers, challenging platformers, and story-driven games.

With developers’ creative independence from the influence of leading publishers, these little gems are often the most imaginative and innovative titles on the market, with creators free to experiment in ways that AAA studios usually can’t. This phenomenon has been steadily growing in popularity over the past few years, with the best indie games getting accolades from critics and awards during gaming festivals.

We’ve put together a list of indie game recommendations that we think are worth checking out to show you just how diverse and innovative the indie game scene has become. We’ve also included a few titles that have been recently released, so if you’re looking for something fresh to play on your PC or console, this list is sure to have something on it for you!

Its employees are trying to get Koch Games’ developers into their group without much luck, with the conflict threatening the unity of the festival itself. Oh, and to add a pinch of weirdness, the characters are animals. It sounds unusual, but somehow it all works, and the story and soundtrack are engaging from start to finish.

Be advised, Rainworld is a gem in the rough and once you have gotten into it it's kind of amazing, but it is VERY hard, is quite vague on what you should be doing (the story is mostly emergent). You can easily stumble into area's you havent learned the skills to deal with yet in the beginningand get killed again and again. And by skills I mean things you figure out playing because there aren't any real combat upgrades to be found. But it's ecosystem and creature behavior is very good.

The story is the purpose for this one. Great interactieve storytelling slowly reveals bit by bit what happened, why and why you are in the middle of it. Contains plenty of "oh c**p what is that thing" moments.

Why is this not higher up? AMAZING game. You get to play as a cat in a post-apocalyptic world, and do cat things while going through the story. (Including, but not limited to: tripping robots, meowing on command, walking on keyboards, knocking things over...) Tugs at the heartstrings, for sure, but so worth it. Anyone playing it, let me give one piece of advice; at the very end when the cat is walking out, pay attention to the left part of your screen. You're welcome.

Stifling, corporate dystopia a la Bladerunner. I liked the premise and story a lot. A bit clunky sometimes. Has one of the last performances of Rutgher Hauer as the MC.

Great game with great art. Plus has one of the cutest mascot assistants that packs firepower.

I'm one of the few that didn't like this game. Only a little bit in there's a repetitive bit where you fall *repeatedly* in holes on the floor and about the fifth time it happened to me, with the slow as molasses "fights" in between, I quit. I wanted to like it. I didn't.

This and Giacamelee 1 are a feast for the eye and has a good sense of humor. Try to recognize all of the little easter eggs and game references you see along the way all drenched in a Mexican sauce.

Be a reaper crow on the hunt for wayward souls for you slightly off boss. Animation and world has a bit of a Ghibli vibe. What's not to love? Pretty and plays great.

A game similar to werewolf, where you and your friends (or strangers if you're playing online) go around the map doing tasks while an imposter is going around killing everyone. Find out who the imposter is and throw them out before it's too late. sussy baka amogus
