Recently, the Internet has been buzzing with a new meme trend – visual and hilariously funny puns, usually poking fun at famous peoples’ names. This all started back on September 8th, 2008 when someone uploaded a picture of Reese Witherspoon holding a spoon on the art message board b3ta. A picture next to it showed the actress with the spoon removed and a clever pun that read “Reese Withoutaspoon.”
Then, almost a year later, another celebrity name went viral; this time, it was a mirrored image of Kanye West, switching it to Kanye East. However, according to knowyourmeme the phenomena itself didn’t spread till 2012, when a Tumblr user i-am-oregonian posted a name pun with Jafar from the 1992 Disney feature film Aladdin. The post received more than 65.000 notes from February till April.
