Imagine getting a free ride, then telling your driver to get a more comfortable car because theirs is too old. While most of us would be grateful for the gesture, some people may see this act of generosity as an opportunity to demand more, and more, and more. Enter Choosing Beggars, a subreddit dedicated to showcasing ungrateful attitudes and shameless entitlement.

Avid Bored Panda readers might remember that we've covered the community a few times already, but with 2.6 million members, it's so active that one can easily get lost in its content. So, we decided to put together a collection of its funniest and most infuriating posts of all time.

Continue scrolling to check them out, and don't miss the chat we had with therapist and relationship expert Dr. Steven Stosny—you'll find it between the images.

A Brilliant Way To Deal With "Influencers"

Text exchange of choosing beggar getting unexpected reality check over free merch request.

Shattered_Earth Report

To gain a better understanding of these interactions, we got in touch with Dr. Steven Stosny, founder of Compassion Power in suburban Washington, DC, and author of several books on improving relationships.

"There are two major types of entitlement," he told Bored Panda.

"In the first, the entitled feel superior. If not acknowledged as having superior rights and privileges, they may feel inferior. Superiority and inferiority are opposite sides of the same coin."

"The second type is compensatory. Those who suffer from it see themselves as victims of unfair treatment and therefore entitled to special privileges as compensation. 'It's so hard being me. I shouldn't have to wait in line too.'"

As you can see from the pictures, we can run into entitled people at school, work, and other areas of everyday life. Researchers Emily Zitek and Alexander Jordan studied the behavior and published their findings in Social Psychological and Personality Science.

All in all, Zitek and Jordan conducted six experiments. They first tested how 1,259 individuals would behave during a basic word search task where it was essential to follow instructions. The researchers found that those with a high sense of entitlement were less likely to comply with the given directions.

From there, they tested different scenarios to see whether punishment, framing the task as optional, or reducing the perceived personal cost would lead them to comply. None of these tactics worked.

Entitled people do not follow instructions because they would rather take a loss themselves than agree to something they perceive to be unfair to them, the researchers concluded.

Exactly! My tax adviser can do my taxes in 20 minutes and have it done perfectly. Someone asked me why I pay him so much for 20 minutes of work, and I told them he can do it in 20 minutes because he'd been doing it for decades. I'd probably spend hours and still make mistakes.

So what do we do when we run into these people?

Stosny, author of Living and Loving After Betrayal and How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It, said that one of the best strategies is to "ignore their sense of entitlement and act according to your own sense of fairness."

However, if you do find yourselves in a conflict with them, try not to take their coping mechanisms personally.

Choosing Beggar

Man holding a sign about fraud on a roadside, reflecting the 'Choosing Beggars' reality check theme.

Two years ago I saw that guy with the gas can begging for money. Tried to give him four dollars, but he said he doesn’t take anything less than five. After that I saw him there everyday for months. Turns out he’s a fraud with a new Jeep and a nice house. Been following him with this sign since.

Sadly, I know someone (friend of a friend) who does something similar. Her husband has a really high paying job in a local manufacturing facility, he's been there for decades so he's the top tier of pay. He has the new car, she keeps the old car, she wears old clothes and then goes around to the food banks and brings home grocery bags full of food and think she's really smart for getting free groceries. She justifies it because twice a year the plant has a shutdown for 2 weeks, I believe the employees are even compensated for the time that they're not there, but she tells everyone that her husband's out of work. Technically it's true he's not working. But that's the lie that she uses to justify why she can rob the food banks 52 weeks a year. I'm sorry to say that I'm not sorry that this lady recently passed away.

I actually had to tell a potential customer this the other day. It took me years to learn how to make a particular item, I sell them for $100, other people sell something similar for $500, this person's asking if I'll sell it for 10 because it's expensive. I said no, and suggested that they take a screenshot of the item, print it, and put the picture in their collection until they can afford to purchase it for real. (And if that sounds like I'm being sarcastic I'm not because that's what I used to do with my collections, print out photos of the items I was missing and just put the photos in my display case until I could afford to get the real thing)

This just makes me laugh and then know not to take them seriously. I went to Disney World during the holidays and was in a Disney Collector group for my city on fb. Saw a lady asking for someone to pick up this large plushie. I didn't check any bags so space was limited but I contacted her I can pick it up for price+taxes+small fee. She was very nice and really happy. Got home and got super sick, couldn't unpack. I told her I'll leave the plush outside my door and she put money under mat cause I was too sick to interact. After, she messaged me about a spot on the plush. No idea if it was on there before or after. It wasn't bad, easily washed. She demanded money back, how I ruined Christmas, blah blah. She even tried to compare illnesses? I don't know, she flipped. I told her I wasn't a personal shopper (I said this many times while planning tge pick up) or business, I'm not refunding money. It was the most crazy situation. Never going to offer to do that again.

In professional environments, Zitek and Jordan — the authors of the aforementioned study — advise framing instructions to the entitled in ways that make them seem fairer or more legitimate. (Making sure they're satisfied could help operations run smoothly, at least for the time being.)

The authors offered another tip: "If the instructions come from an in-group member such as a peer instead of from an authority figure, perhaps entitled individuals would be more likely to view the instructions as fair and therefore follow them."

It wouldn't be so bad if people were offering a labor trade. There's a couple of local tradesmen in my area-one is a plumber, the other an HVAC. The owners both own their own homes and at least one rental property each. They do work on each other's properties for free.

As a vocalist, I FEEL this. If you want someone to sing for free at your event, ask aunt Lydia or your friend's thirteen year old aspiring diva. They'd love the exposure. But, if you want professional musicians, you need to be willing to compensate them for their time—and not just the time they spend at your gig! When you hire a professional, you're paying for the thousands upon thousands of hours and dollars they spent learning how to perform at a high level, and you're probably getting a better deal than us! Most of us are so obsessed with music that, if we could perform for free and not starve, we absolutely would. Alas, we would starve and I'd rather not do that.

Mine were 3mm over the tip of my fingers, and I had to cut/file them short after I had my daughter - nappy pins (back in the day) were fiddly, and I accidentally scratched her when first changing her nappy. Fair enough, if they're so rich they have peeps to do everything for them ... prob to wipe their backsides for them, too!

Something similar happened with my cousins and uncle. My brother spent days fixing up an old computer from parts so our cousins could have a PC to use for school. Even put in a modem. Older cousin was 18 at the time, younger 13. Explained that 13 year-old would need supervision on the Net. All well except uncle either didn't know how old his oldest was or thought he was too innocent. Yanked all the cables out the back and broke the computer my brother had so generously given his spare parts and time for. Never bought them anything again.
