Imagine getting a free ride, then telling your driver to get a more comfortable car because theirs is too old. While most of us would be grateful for the gesture, some people may see this act of generosity as an opportunity to demand more, and more, and more. Enter Choosing Beggars, a subreddit dedicated to showcasing ungrateful attitudes and shameless entitlement.

Avid Bored Panda readers might remember that we've covered the community a few times already, but with 2.6 million members, it's so active that one can easily get lost in its content. So, we decided to put together a collection of its funniest and most infuriating posts of all time.

Continue scrolling to check them out, and don't miss the chat we had with therapist and relationship expert Dr. Steven Stosny—you'll find it between the images.

To gain a better understanding of these interactions, we got in touch with Dr. Steven Stosny, founder of Compassion Power in suburban Washington, DC, and author of several books on improving relationships.

"There are two major types of entitlement," he told Bored Panda.

"In the first, the entitled feel superior. If not acknowledged as having superior rights and privileges, they may feel inferior. Superiority and inferiority are opposite sides of the same coin."

"The second type is compensatory. Those who suffer from it see themselves as victims of unfair treatment and therefore entitled to special privileges as compensation. 'It's so hard being me. I shouldn't have to wait in line too.'"

As you can see from the pictures, we can run into entitled people at school, work, and other areas of everyday life. Researchers Emily Zitek and Alexander Jordan studied the behavior and published their findings in Social Psychological and Personality Science.

All in all, Zitek and Jordan conducted six experiments. They first tested how 1,259 individuals would behave during a basic word search task where it was essential to follow instructions. The researchers found that those with a high sense of entitlement were less likely to comply with the given directions.

From there, they tested different scenarios to see whether punishment, framing the task as optional, or reducing the perceived personal cost would lead them to comply. None of these tactics worked.

Entitled people do not follow instructions because they would rather take a loss themselves than agree to something they perceive to be unfair to them, the researchers concluded.

So what do we do when we run into these people?

Stosny, author of Living and Loving After Betrayal and How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It, said that one of the best strategies is to "ignore their sense of entitlement and act according to your own sense of fairness."

However, if you do find yourselves in a conflict with them, try not to take their coping mechanisms personally.

Choosing Beggar

Man holding a sign about fraud on a roadside, reflecting the 'Choosing Beggars' reality check theme.

Two years ago I saw that guy with the gas can begging for money. Tried to give him four dollars, but he said he doesn’t take anything less than five. After that I saw him there everyday for months. Turns out he’s a fraud with a new Jeep and a nice house. Been following him with this sign since.

Ha ha! Etiquette especially applies to family, because family members labour under the assumption that they can say anything, everytime and whenever they want to whomever they want in the family.

I don't know if I am in a minority or not but it seems to me that often 'family' treat each other appallingly and then say that because of 'family' they just have to suck it up when anyone else would have simply told them to fvck off.

You want a gift? The least you can do is invite me to a baby shower that I have no intention to go to. Because then you'll get the gift, I'll make some excuse as to why I can't go, feel slightly bad about it, you get the gift, and I don't have to go to a baby shower. Win win.

Exactly what I was thinking. He wants OP to follow etiquette rules by buying a gift, but he doesn't want to follow etiquette rules because family.

If "etiquette rules don't apply" for party invites, then they don't apply for gifts either, and so she doesn't have to get them anything.

My SIL complained that I bought my nephew's loads of clothes from Tesco/Sainsbury's/ASDA, where I buy some of my own clothes from. She wanted only clothes from Next, because it's a fancier brand as if babies don't grow out of clothes really fast. Never bought my nephew's any more clothes ever, just got them toys, chocolate or books after that.

Yeah, that's not how it works. Guests bring gifts, but people who weren't even invited aren't expected to do anything. "I don't want you there, but I still expect a gift" is utter BS. The gift is for the party, If they're not invited to the party, they have no reason to buy a gift.

Etiquette says you invite family. They can always decline, but no invite = no gift, especially if you assume and ask what you are getting!

My MOH invited me to her bridal shower by phone to to tell me I wasn’t invited to the destination wedding I already knew about and planned on going to because her mom was a second mom to me. Her mom made my veil! I took it as a jealousy snub and of course didn’t go to the shower. So like I did she had a reception back home for people that weren’t at the wedding (I invited everyone to the wedding and offered to pay for a few people’s way, a few people more than we expected showed up Yayy! got their own hotels but we paid for dinners!) So my mom was really upset and found the cheapest thing on her registry but that I would like. It was a $12 juicer from target. At the time I was constantly making lemonade, salsa because we were entertaining a lot. so I was tired of my hand juicer so my mom bought 2, one for the bride, one for me. I still love that juicer. My mom is usually generous but she was pissed about the snub. So be careful how you invite and disinvite people.

If you think the feelings of family member should be protected, then you invite them to your baby shower.

In professional environments, Zitek and Jordan — the authors of the aforementioned study — advise framing instructions to the entitled in ways that make them seem fairer or more legitimate. (Making sure they're satisfied could help operations run smoothly, at least for the time being.)

The authors offered another tip: "If the instructions come from an in-group member such as a peer instead of from an authority figure, perhaps entitled individuals would be more likely to view the instructions as fair and therefore follow them."
