Behind The Leather: PETA Surprises Shoppers With Fake Leather Accessories

Some people tend to turn a blind eye to animal suffering when it comes to buying leather goods. Ogilvy & Mather Advertising Bangkok and PETA Asia teamed up to change this attitude. They opened a fake pop-up shop in one of Bangkok’s most trendy shopping malls and put seemingly ordinary luxury leather goods on display. However, they had a terrifying secret inside.

The inside of the bags, shoes, wallets, and other items was the ultimate definition of gore. “Shoppers were shocked when they opened a bag or unzipped a jacket to reveal a beating heart or pulsating intestines,” PETA’s Ashley Fruno told Bored Panda. “This is a provocative way to confront consumers with the cruelty behind every exotics skin bag, belt, jacket or pair of shoes.”

PETA Asia and Ogilvy created a fake pop-up shop in one of Bangkok’s most trendy shopping malls

Unsuspecting shoppers jumped back in horror, gasping for breath

Leather purses, jackets, and even gloves were filled with fake animal flesh and blood

“Every year, at least 440,000 pythons are caught in the jungles of Southeast Asia”

They’re cruelly decapitated

Sometimes they’re even skinned alive…

Just to become a trendy item…

“An average handbag requires the slaughter of not one, but four crocodiles”

Does this really have to be the price to pay for yet another bag?

Watch how shoppers reacted to these bloody accessories here:

Thank you, Ashley Fruno, for talking to Bored Panda about this much needed project!

I consider myself an animal lover, and I personally don't wear leather, but I think PETA crossed the line and then some here. In fact I suspect that the number of people who are going to be put off by their tactics is going to be larger than the number of those who change their minds as a result of this particular stunt by several orders of magnitude, and I'm fairly certain that most of those forwarding this link to everyone they know already consider themselves animal rights activists. In other words, what we have here is yet another instance of PETA preaching to the choir while annoying pretty much everyone else.

I love leather. Basic cow or deer hide from a local hunter is my favorite. Exotic leather from stores come from cruel places. Shop local, buy local and support a local hunter. PETA stupid shock method is hypocrisy since they kill many dogs and cats. Know the difference and know your facts. Not all leather is sourced from cruelty. Don't like leather, don't buy it. Hunting a local deer or an exotic python is the same level of "cruelty" (not that I specially care, I'm not vegetarian..but I don't support hunters neither). The big difference is the method of hunting and killing, the regulation about the numbers of animals allowed to kill,... FYI most of crocodile leather come from crocodile farms and are killed in an official framework. I think it's far more important to have a global conservation than looking at one specific animal (except if it's endangered)

WAKE UP PEOPLE! PeTA is the most hypocritical organization in the world. They dupe the simple minded with their insincere "animal rights" message while they're killing tens of thousands of animals in their "care" (last count over 30,000 as reported to the state of Virginia). The real kicker? They are against no-kill animal shelters. If you're sending money to them, stop and, instead, contribute to your local animal shelter where you will really be helping animals in need.

While reading some of the comments, I found that some people did not appreciate the doings of PETA as how they are protecting the animals. I think PETA is just doing their job as protect, no to mistreat and give us awareness about the animals. Please don't say something not good to them just because of how they're are promoting their advertisement regarding to this matter. Even though it kinda inappropriate (especially to those of our children) for them to use something like that as an advertisement but I think they're just doing this because of their love to the animals. I think its unfair that they are doing something for the good of all while we are here doing nothing and complaining something that we ourselves did not contribute for that matter.

Wow, a lot of people are talking around the point here. The point being - every piece of leather was once a live animal. Something people really don't want to think about. Don't like PETA? Power to ya! But support the petitions and legislation. We need change, and it's not going to come by complaining about an animal welfare organization. It takes your active involvement. Shop wisely. Support petitions. Pay attention to legislation. And VOTE.

That's the only way to fight the ignorance of people WHO JUST DON'T CARE that their "cool" leather Jackets etc. are made of suffering and pain and dead. How could anyone dare to even think that it's right to abuse and kill animals only for...WHAT??? That you're "looking" good??? It tastes good??? We don't even need to kill animals to fill our bellies. So for Gods sake...what part of "You shall not kill" people don't understand?

theres way more important s**t in this world to worry about than some stupid pythons and crocodiles being cut up and turned into bags. really??? it takes 4 crocodiles to make a hand bag, get the f**k out of here with that bull s**t. it sure be more like 1 alligator can make 4 hand bags. oh and I agree with Jeff Davis..PETA can eat a bag of d***s. obviously their "tactics" haven't worked since people still love their leathers :-) I could understand if the animals in question were endangered of being extinct, but come on!!

PETA is indeed extreme, however, sometimes that's what it takes to make people realize where leather comes from. The same hold true for the meat we eat. I've seem some pretty graphic PETA exhibits concerning the meat we eat. I'm not a vegetarian, but it goes without saying that we all "know" how our food animals are raised. Every time I see a documentary or exhibit about these food animals I think twice. Don't you?

And VOTE.

In all seriousness, where can I buy one of those bags? I think they look awesome. Also is the beating heart rechargeable or battery operated? By the way this is a real question, I really want one.

I don't think the killing of reptiles is as bad as the killing of mammals

PETA is indeed extreme, however, sometimes that's what it takes to make people realize where leather comes from. The same hold true for the meat we eat. I've seem some pretty graphic PETA exhibits concerning the meat we eat. I'm not a vegetarian, but it goes without saying that we all "know" how our food animals are raised. Every time I see a documentary or exhibit about these food animals I think twice. Don't you?

I do think twice, and that's why I cannot eat animals. I don't understand how you can know how factory farms raise and slaughter animals, and still eat them.

A lot of things to worry about other than snakes and gators being made into a purse.

Brilliant! A pop-up shop like this should be put in every trendy shopping district. Sometimes you need shock tactics like this one to drive the message home.
