You probably already know that many movies use visual effects to enhance (or sometimes ruin) our cinematic experience, but you probably didn't realize just how often - and to what extent - such effects are used in the modern-day film industry.
Sure we know that the tiger in Life of Pi wasn't real (we all know that, right?). Nor was most of what we saw in The Avengers. Oh, and Alice in Wonderland. That wasn't real either. Sorry. But you might be surprised to learn that other movies have also been digitally manipulated, and in ways that you might not expect. Take a look at the revealing before-and-after pictures we've compiled for you below to see what we mean. You'll never look at movies in the same way again.

Game Of Thrones
How could she keep a straight face while looking at this green blob?
Guardians Of The Galaxy
Pirates Of The Caribbean
Life Of Pi
Alice In Wonderland
Twilight Saga: Eclipse
Boardwalk Empire
The Hobbit
And the only thing that stands out to me is the extra hair they added over Bilbo's ear.
The Great Gatsby
The Dark Knight
The Matrix
X-Men: Days Of Future Past
The Hobbit
Game Of Thrones
Alice In Wonderland
Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince
Oz, The Great And Powerful
The Secret In Their Eyes
Life Of Pi
The Wolf Of Wall Street
The Lord Of The Rings
The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader
The Avengers
I see a face in her hair. Lower right area. Guess it's just an optical illusion.
The Walking Dead
Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
Deadpool
Gravity
Godzilla
Game Of Thrones
Mad Max: Fury Road
King Arthur
Mad Max: Fury Road
Mad Max: Fury Road
Elysium
Robocop
300 - Rise Of An Empire
Mad Max: Fury Road
Game Of Thrones
The Martian
They faked the Martian!?! You're probably going to tell me the Moon landing never happened...
Into The Woods
I hate this movie.. I hate the musical. It's like Shrek with no ogres and more b******t.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn
The Chronicles Of Narnia
Must have been real awkward to have someone record you climbing a bunch of rocks
Iron Man
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows
They made his cloak long enough to sweep the floors. Magic at its finest. DustRepellio
Game Of Thrones
The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Grey’s Anatomy
The Monuments Men
Game Of Thrones
Episodes
It must be truly harder to act in the movies of today than it was 80 years ago.
Ugly Betty
Is it really cheaper to animate it then to just go shooting in the street? So weird...
The Homesman
Deadly Honeymoon
District 9
300
This isn't 300. This screenshot is from 300:Rise of an Empire. You shouldn't confuse the two movies. The first movie was cool, clings more to the book, has more sense, and the guys are so f*ckeable. The latter one is just sad, doesn't even compare to 300's level (despite Eva Green's tit show, it's a meh-- movie)
Elysium
Paranoia
300 - Rise Of An Empire
Robocop
so update today i couldnt find a toilet so i instead i pooped in my cats litter box
hi guys i'm back! I went back to this website and instead of farting i took a dump on my moms bed. Can someone help me convince her it was the dog not me? Thanks uwu.
Amazing. It's unbelievable to think about the immense talent these actors have to make the "scene" believable regardless of it not truly being there. Technology and the movie industry is amazing! ~AM
These scenes will never make same effects on someone who didn't know about visual effects a lot. I see amazing works and efforts. Great!
Acting is just not the same anymore. Years ago, of course quality was worse, but still the actors visited real places or had actual requisites. not just green screens all around them.. no wonder ian mckellen had to cry once
You should see some of the "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" filming pics! The actor (Captain America) is standing in front of a green screen waving his shield or whatever, while in the movie, NYC is exploding!
Haha ... wasn't until photo 20 that I realized (by accident) that you can move the photo! :D
Bravo to the actors. But it makes me sad that our world is so fake and all the beautiful places that exist are never featured any where.
Actors and film makers used to travel to exotic locations to make movies....I guess no more?
i love looking at these pictures and it makes me respect the film workers who put hours and hours into creating an amazing fantasy world that not even words can comprehend.

Yes ... let's all just live in our fantasy worlds of ignorance. *eye roll* It's pretty awesome to see all the work that goes into the behind the scenes, and how they create such fantastic imaginary worlds! Clearly a lot of this isn't real, and I guess it's kind of inspiring (in a small imaginative naive way) if some of you thought it was LOL. The only one that surprised me was Life of Pi. I thought the tiger was actually real and there. But it hasn't 'taken the magic' away for me, it was a lovely movie, and I'm rather impressed!! Pull your head out of your butts!
This is very much like watching an expose' of how your favorite magic tricks are done. It is less fun once you know the trick.
At first I thought this was pretty incredible, then I saw some pretty simplistic scenes that were straight green screen, and it kind of kills the magic for me.
Just wondering how did you make this happen when what you see changes as your cursor slide over the picture? What kind of technology did you employ? It's really an amazing way to show the before-and-after pictures!
I posted this on Facebook a year ago and decided to revisit this article and WOW.. still blown away. MOST of these movies I've seen and ... yea, just amazing!
"You might be surprised to learn that other movies have also been digitally manipulated" Most of these examples are really f*****g obvious. Not surprised at all. I mean, you would be expecting some stuff like the Great Gatsby example, but the Hobbit? Seriously? That is in no way surprising. A Quidditch scene? Wow, that's surprising, I didn't know brooms didn't fly.
I am glad that there's Glum <3 but Smaug could be also pretty cool to see like this, I guess :)
what?! no sky captain and the world of tomorrow? it was almost completely done in green rooms and cgi! it has great videos of it on the dvd
