Ceramic Surgery: I Explore What’s Underneath The Surface Of Ceramic Dishes

Hi, I’m Beccy Ridsdel. I’m a ceramicist who is really interested in what lies underneath the surface of traditional floral dinnerware.

My idea was inspired by the art and craft debate – just what makes something art and not craft? Can an object be both? By taking a scalpel to traditional pottery – pretty, but everyday pieces that your grandma might have used – I hoped to see something else beneath the surface.

What I saw was a deeper layer of chintz and traditional florals, there was nothing else, but by the act of cutting I created something new. Something that was both craft and art, or maybe neither. I’ll let you decide.

I love it. If the paint peels of, don't worry, there's a second floral layer!

So is this old China recovered to make new crockery? Not sure if that would actually be possible. Why would there be designs underneath. Its not like this a normal thing, where people would cut the dishes open to see these designs. Makes me wonder if this is a gimmick by the artist.
