50 Of The Most Breathtaking Forgotten Places, Shared In The ‘Abandoned Beauties’ Facebook Group
There aren’t too many opportunities to feel like an adventurer in modern times. However, exploring abandoned places and finding unexpected treasures can give you that deep thrill. You might not bring anything physical back to show for your efforts, but the photos you take and the first-hand experiences make for even better souvenirs.
The ‘Abandoned Beauties’ Facebook page is dedicated to urban exploration (aka Urbex or UE) and showcasing gorgeous images of abandoned places and objects. Both past and present. We’ve got a beautiful selection of photos from them to share with you today, Pandas, so go on and have a scroll down into the mysterious, uncharted wilds of Urbex. Upvote your fave photos and, if you’ve ever gone exploring like this yourselves, tell us all about it in the comments.
A very strong note of warning, dear Pandas: your safety is of paramount importance. If you plan on exploring any abandoned places, you need to take the necessary precautions and be extremely careful. I know that you’re all very capable, but you can’t go adventuring without the proper preparations if you want to stay safe. More on that below.
I reached out to photographer Dominic Sberna for some advice about how to keep our photography gear safe while exploring new areas, how to get the right lighting for photos in dark settings, and to understand just how vital camera angles are.
Dominic told Bored Panda that camera angles are important when it comes to showing off the scope of a large building. "A lower angle is going to intensify the view, just as a high vantage point would. The vantage point really matters as well. Depending on what you're going for in your shot, you'll want to have a nice showcase of the scene in front of you when exploring any abandoned property," the photographer explained. You'll find the full interview below.

Mcdermott's Castle, Abandoned Fairytale Irish Castle In The Middle Of A Lake, County Roscommon, Ireland
oohh if it was in good conditions i would love to live there: no one around, no neighbours, no neighbours' dogs, no car noises... only birds.
What lake?! It's just floating around, where ever I want. It's mine. Aaall MINE!
It looks very interesting to go see the castle but I would not go near the big hole‼️💯
"A wide-angle lens is always a great option for any confined space, but again this all depends on the look you're going for and is absolutely dependent on the scene in front of you. If you're in a massive industrial warehouse, you could lose some impact to your image if you have a super-wide-angle lens," photographer Dominic told Bored Panda
"At the end of the day, just like any genre of photography and anything in life, practice makes perfect. But don't beat yourself up if your images aren't 'perfect.' You should always try to take them for yourself. If others like them, that's an added bonus and you'll stay true to your creative self by knowing you did things for yourself," the photographer suggested that we focus on what makes us happy instead of trying to please absolutely everyone else.
Abandoned House In The Swamp
It's not abandoned, that's Marie LaVeau's place. The reason they think nobody lives there is cuz eeee, another man done gone.
Nope Marie Laveau lived at 152 Rue St. Ann (the location is marked today as 1020 St. Ann Street)

WOW... What an entrance.... It's a shame they didn't maintain it...
Impressive work done, back in the day, without tools, today with modern tools and technology, builders are lazy, what is built today, is extremely boring !!!
I want to see that carved wall on left, so I can read all of it. Last word is "Christ".
last line is "our lord jesus christ" ...together we can decipher it!
Load More Replies..."The best way to keep your camera safe is to always keep it attached to you. That might mean different things to different people. Generally having your camera strap around your neck is a good thing. But, if you feel more comfortable holding it, that way if something unexpected does happen, you can move as needed," Dominic said.
When it comes to lighting, your camera's inbuilt flash might not be enough. He shared that he will "always advocate" for a tripod and a long exposure when shooting in dark settings.
The Garden Of Ninfa Is A Landscape Garden In The Territory Of Cisterna Di Latina, In The Province Of Latina, Central Italy
The garden includes the ruins of the ancient settlement of Ninfa, whose name seems to derive from a classical era nymphaeum, a temple dedicated to nymphs, located on an island in the small lake.
Wisteria is one of life’s most beautiful smells!
Load More Replies...It is certainly not abandoned (not, at least, now it isn't). It is a major tourist location. It has an ancient history - dating back to the Romans - but malaria finally finished it off as a place of habitation in the 17th century. Now it is an Italian national/natural monument and it is a very popular location for visitors.
it's not abandoned at all, is a private park you can visit after booking for a ticket that is pretty cheap, about 5 €
I read it as Ninja. I'm not quite awake yet either.....

Can you imagine how beautiful this once was.. The winding staircase, the balls that took place there... So sad that it can't be restored...
It will be restored with some elbow grease and a can-do attitude. We just need to wait for all those that carry the Spirit Of Dadliness to unite.

This castle is named “Castle of Sammezzano”. It is in Tuscany and sice fewer years ago, it was possibile a tourist guide-visit. I had the possibilità to visit it and it was a Beautiful experience!
I know ther eis a ridicolous amount of beatiful buildings in Italy, but they MUST preserve this one! According to Wiki, they are trying. The inside is even more insane than the outside.
People ask why these buildings are abandoned. The simple reason is maintenance and upkeep is prohibitively expensive unless you are super wealthy. That is why there are so many of these beautiful buildings standing abandoned all over the place.
And that gives you some idea of how rich the kings, princes, and aristocrats who lived there were. And why the peasants that lived there were so dirt-grubbingly poor.

"If you're wanting an action shot in the dark or a more illuminated subject, I'd recommend using an external flash or using external lighting altogether," Dominic suggested. "Depending on the look you're going for will depend on your preferred light source."
He noted that the flash on a camera has a fairly harsh and direct light. "You're going to cause a lot of harsh shadows and as a general rule, I would recommend staying away from the on-camera flash unless you absolutely have to use it," the photographer told Bored Panda.
The Stairway Of An Abandoned Button Factory
Looks like someone raided the place and dropped the stash as they were escaping.
Looks more like there was a bizarre button accident that required the place be shut down before a massive button meltdown occurred. My guess? They shouldn't've hired someone who goes by "The Other Mother."
Load More Replies...Just think of all the beautiful things that could be made with all of these. Wow.
Time to be scooping up some free buttons. Always plenty of projects you can do with them

Abandoned 19th Century Greenhouse, France
Cold winters under dozens of quilts and a few books from that old library.
Load More Replies...Doesn't look like it would take too much work to ship-shape and Bristol-fashion this place.
Best I could find is the owners abandoned the greenhouse to nature. Those grounds are still carefully tended.
Load More Replies...The ‘Abandoned Beauties’ project has quite the member count over on Facebook. A whopping 435.8k people follow the page. It’s easy to see why.
The photos are stunning and evoke a sense of mystery, adventure, and uncovering lost secrets. The photos are also peppered with a heavy dose of creepiness that makes us just uncomfortable enough to keep us alert.
Abandoned Glasshouse
We have one of these in my town park. It’s really beautiful. I wanted to restore it and turn it into a cafe, the council planning department said no and it’s still rotting away with more and more windows being smashed by yobs each passing year. Sigh.
Try again! Great idea. Tell them that it's important that people have places to meet #covid
Load More Replies...Council issues seem to be a power play. Try again and get a petition going for signatures by the local surrounding businesses/people who live near by. Go to your local politicians and contact individuals on the council. Have a good plan and explanation of your goal. If you can get an artist to draw what it will look like. We had to do this for a house it worked and I don’t regret doing it. Good luck. Long love beautiful old buildings.
When I see these beautiful glass greenhouses in disrepair, a small part of me dies.
Abandoned Mansion, Belgium
Why post fake pictures though? It's not warped in reality. This picture doesn't belong here.
Now that's the kinda place I can imagine myself in the attic dressed in my late mum's frocks and talking to myself......... although I can't do her voice... it's far too deep. (She's not allowed to speak in casinos because the vibrations set the slot machine alarms off)
I don't know if they used a lense or if that building got no internal support at all.
I doubt it was built with the ends leaning outward, and if it has settled like that, there would be a huge split in the middle.
I doubt it was built with both ends leaning outward, and if it settled that way, surely it would be torn apart in the middle.
Abandoned Chapel In France
Because restauration is really expensive, especially if you need highly specialist artists for it. And you need those because you have to adhere to preservation order codes. And if you own an old castle that happens to have a chapel in the gardens, your efforts and money go to the castle first.
Load More Replies...Why would they abandon this beautiful church, crazy. The Catholic church has way too much money.
I'm looking at all these amazing photos of beautiful places, wondering, "Why? What happened here?"
The founder of the ‘Abandoned Beauties’ project notes that they credit all the photographers for their work. If you notice a gorgeous photo without any credits, then that means that the image is either part of the creative commons license or the page wasn’t able to find the original photographer.
If you have any questions about all of that and you want to give the photographers a follow but can’t seem to find the original source, try asking the page moderator or the community itself. You never know, you might find someone who’s in the know!
One thing to keep in mind is that, overwhelmingly, the authors of the photos don’t add details about the precise locations. This is done very much on purpose, in order to protect the locations and objects from vandalism.
The Ruins Of Bannerman’s Castle, An Abandoned Military Surplus Warehouse, Still Stand In The Middle Of The Hudson River
Wellll... they're working towards opening as much as they can. Currently, you can now get to the island after decades of closure. But making the castle safe to enter is probably a decades-long process.

I Don't Understand Why People Abandoned Beautiful Properties Like This
You don't understand? How much money do you have to maintain the building, heat the place, electric bills, etc.
Combating the rising damp, replacing the mortar, sourcing good timber, removing the frescoes to fix the backing then replacing. Many of the artistic skills are gone too.
Load More Replies...Some abandoned places were left as part of an estate with an inheritance dispute. By the time its sorted, the place is in such disrepair nobody can afford to restore it.
In some countries there is a reason like war... I know of some really old abandoned houses in a forrest near my home town. Most of them are almost invisible now but I know where you can find them. It used to be part of the nearby village but WW2 happened and after that it became part of the no-man's land on borders between my country and germany. Wandering and living here was limited, so the forrest claimed it...
Usually because they are too expensive to restore, Simple renovations will not be acceptable, Councils usually have these older buildings earmarked as Heritage Listed. Meaning Exact Replica Renovations.
Being 3 years into renovating a 1920 home, I fully understand. There comes a time when it's cheaper to just walk away than to update. Some places give assistance and/or incentives to renovate historical properties, unfortunately for me, I don't live in one of those. Even though all work to the exterior has to be approved by the Architectural Review Board (historical board) they offer no financial assistance. Banks won't even talk about a loan until it's done. I didn't go in blind, we knew what needed to be done and how to do it but had no idea banks wouldn't give a renovation or construction loan. So we have no choice but to carry on.
Believe me it takes a lot of money the heating bills alone . I owned a manor house an example on the landing was a set of leaded stain glass windows rot had got in the window frame. This had started inside the wood and had not been detected for years with inspections to repair the oak window frames and a few repairs to the lead in the windows the cost $35.000.00 this was in 1980 . You get one small leak and it travels for years before it's discovered and by then the damage that has been done can go from the were the leak started down three stories specially now when people don't have live in staff and half the place is not in use.
Keeping the locations secret is a very practical approach. While a handful of urban explorers visiting an abandoned ship (which is dangerous in itself) might not do much harm (especially if they don’t remove anything as souvenirs), the same can’t be said about dozens, hundreds, or possibly even thousands of visitors.
A Library Inside An Abandoned 19th Century Victorian Mansion. Who Wants To Explore??
I'll take the bookcases! The books might be beyond saving, though there are likely many first editions.
Load More Replies...It's a shame to see those books. Many years before someone bought and saved books, becoming more through the generations, later ordered this beautiful library furniture. Maybe this was the pride of that manor. And now look at it - making every book lover heartbreak.
It does depend on what kind of books they are. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries all manner of droll and largely useless things were bound into books simply as a means of maintain them as reference material. Hundred-volume sets of laws for countries that no longer exist, summaries of financial records, serial publications from governments, etc. During my time working for a university library we filled 30-yard dumpsters with old law books and government publications like financials, agricultural statistics, minutes from committee meetings, 'recommended practices' etc., which had been superseded, or were entirely obsolete. Not all books are great literature or celebrated scientific texts.
Load More Replies...I'm saddened that no one gave the books more respect than this...

A Roman Bathhouse Still In Use After 2,000 Years In Khenchela, Algeria
lol. i was thinking the same exact thing. we sure don't build like they did!
Load More Replies...An engineer once told me that the Romans routinely built things more solidly than necessary because of their weird number system. It was so difficult to figure out how thick a wall really needed to be that masons just doubled the estimate and...voilà: a structure to withstand the ages!
I recently heard a story about how they figured out how to mix a type of concrete that continues to get stronger with age instead of deteriorating, and that the recipe was lost to time and we still have no idea how they did it.

An Old Castle That’s Been Left Behind In England
It's not an abandoned castle, it's King Alfred's tower, a folly built in the1760s to commemorate the end of the Seven Years' War against France and the accession of King George III near the location of Egbert's Stone, where it is believed that Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, rallied the Anglo-Saxons in 878 before the Battle of Edington.
Thanks, Rich, for taking time to share the history...!!!

Been there. Thought about walking up. Decided not to.
Load More Replies...I love old beacon towers. The keepers quarters are on the left. Between 1200-1800 beacon keeps were built throughout Europe. Built on a rise, a hill, or a mountain, the tall narrow towers could be seen for many miles. A beaconeer would have banners, flags or a lens to send signals or codes to armies or even other towers.
More foot traffic means more wear and tear and that means that the risk of getting hurt increases. Someone might weaken the floorboards in an abandoned shack or someone else might have vandalized the railings, leading to a nasty fall.
Abandoned Beach House Slowly Being Reclaimed By The Sea, North Carolina
I thought they moved this house a year or two ago. Could've been another one, but there was a massive house they moved on the outer banks.
it's being CLAIMED by the sea, REclaimed would mean it came from the sea in the first place and now the sea is taking it back where it came from.
Shengsi Islands
There are few reminders of the power of nature as beautiful and stark as the scenes at the abandoned village of Houtouwan, on the Shengsi archipelago just off the Chinese mainland.

And at the rate we're going, we will be long gone.

Makes great paper, though...no more cutting down trees if you simply chop down the Kudzu vines and process them in a similar fashion.

Beautiful Abandoned Miners' Cottages In A Disused Slate Quarry In Snowdonia, North Wales
The quarry closed in 1969 due to industry decline and because 170-years of working the site had reaulted in waste tips sliding into the main pit workings.

Preparation is everything when it comes to Urbex. That means getting yourself a good pair of gloves, a pair of thick shoes, and wearing a quality dust mask. The trompe l'oeil tile is beautiful. The far "columns" look real. I wish I could have seen this in its glory. That sideboard!
I certainly appreciate the skill and artistry involved, but way too garish for my tastes.
Image how much time it took to carve all the details just for no one to fix it and leave it to die.
Before you venture out, do some research about the area and the specific location. Reach out to any local Urbex communities or any pals who you know go exploring after school or work. Whenever possible, consider starting your adventure with a partner or two by your side. That way, if one of you gets hurt, the other can help! And that means that you all get back home safely, ready to share your fantastic photos with everyone on the internet.

I could never be paid enough to explore a sanatorium/asylum. They way they treated patients back then was definitely against basic human rights. I'm all about abandoned or haunted places but there's way too much negative energy in those places because I've never herd of one closing down just because there's was always a very bad reason.
Creepy but definitely explorable! Only a day trip, though...it would be like a scary horror story of crazed ghost doctors and patients after the living...
Sintra
This is not abandoned, it is called "Poço Iniciático" (or Well of Initiation), and it belongs to the complex of Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal. It can be visited.
You can descend, and at the bottom is a passage to a series of walkways, one of which exits under a small waterfall - sideways (so you don't get soaked.) It was part of a 'journey' the owner, a Rosicrucian, used to display some of their ideals.
Load More Replies...Yup. it's one of the "Initiation Wells" at Quinta da Regaleira, in Portugal. Built between 1904-10 by an eccentric millionaire named António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro qho had a serious fetish for anythign relating to alchemy, Masonry, the Knights Templar, and the Rosicrucians, so he built a whole lot of "ruins", "temples", etc. on his property.
Load More Replies...I think this place was shown on the series The Cuse of Oak Island. For those who haven't watched it, Oak Island has a history of being a place where the Knights Templar may have hidden a large cache of treasure. There are symbols and similar items like stone cairns they have found and in this "well" they were shown symbols that matched up with some on Oak Island.
Skola Tower. Italia
Is that the real name? There was no letter K in the Italian language.
A misspelling by perhaps the proofreader…..Scola is the correct spelling of the tower
Load More Replies...Fascinating. Built in 1700s to protect the nearby coastal villages, Scola was damaged in 1800, used for target practice, restored by a local politician.
I think it is usually spelt with a "C". It is off the Ligurian coast.
Is this a ruin? The walls don't look jagged, and there's no debris in the water. Was it a gun platform? I could imagine three cannons at the top, ready to make life miserable for any ship coming in with bad intentions.

Atmosphere In Russia
Churches weren't collectivized as that was a program for agriculture and only affected peasant landholdings. The building could have been seized for use by the local government and certainly the church goods would have been stripped out, but that likely happened in 1920-1921 when much of the church gold was sold abroad to feed the victims of the 1921 famine. It's also quite likely that the whole village has become too small to care for the church or just abandon as the country urbanizes

So, humans are just going to leave those there, huh? Rusting away. Dripping oil and gas into the environment. Super.
They were recalled because of issues with the engine/transmission I think, I can’t remember.

Did I see this in an architecture rag or online? They cleaned it up and now do wine tastings..?
Smirnykh, Sakhalinskaya Oblast', Russia
Originally, the airfield on this place was built in the early 20th century for the Imperial Japanese Army and was called Keton. It consisted of a 1200 m long concrete runway, gravel taxiways and about 20 equipped aircraft parking lots.
⠀
After the Soviet Union regained control over Sakhalin in 1945, the Smirnykh airfield (both the village and airfield were renamed in 1946 after the battalion commander who died in the battles for the liberation of the island in this area) became home to the 528th Fighter Aviation Regiment, which performed the tasks of air defense of Sakhalin Island and its marine zone.
⠀
In 1966, the airfield was reconstructed. A new runway with a length of 2,000 m was built, which was later extended to 2,500 m, as well as reinforced concrete shelters for aircrafts with fan exit to taxiways.
⠀
In 1994 the fighter aviation regiment was disbanded. The aircrafts were moved to Komsomolsk-on-Amur, where a storage base was equipped, but later all of them were disposed off. But two MiG-23s, one combat aircraft and one combat trainer, were left in hangars at the Smirnykh, where they remain to this day...
Just like Afghanistan. Can't retrieve all the equipment? Disable it and leave it.
No, that was never built, and it was proposed on the other side of the war ;) I'll see myself out xD

It was built for the chemist Carl Kolbe (1855–1909), the sole signatory general director of the nearby Heyden chemical factory. You can go see it they're giving tours of the building.

Looks like old houses in Tbilisi,Sololaki . There are plenty of them there. full of wisdom and beauty.
Next thing we'll hear from these walls is "I've fallen and I can't get up", I think.
Soviet Era Tupolev 104 Jet
Isn't this scene one of the last few scenes or so from the movie "Lemony Snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events"?? Where Jim Carey plays the roll of many characters, ultimately he's the villian! Excellent family movie indeed!! I recommend in case anyone hasn't seen it... true children's classic!! You won't be disappointed!!
Omg, these are beautifull and liveable, once fixed up. Look at that couple from England that brought a 45 room mansion abandoned in the south of France. Cannot remember their name. His name is d**k. He is so amazing, so is she. Surely homeless people could go in. How can these just be abandoned?

Theaters aren't really that 'decadent' as nearly all their interior architecture is made of molded plaster hanging from the ceiling. It's also why restoration is so difficult and time-consuming. They weren't designed to exist forever.

Odd. Were the stairs added later? Would prevent it going round otherwise.
No, they are original. The floor turns too. People could stand on the balcony and watch the world go round.

This Beautiful Synagogue Has Been Abandoned For Over 20 Years
That is, sadly, the The Great Synagogue of Constanța, built in 1914 in a Moorish Revival architectural style. It was abandoned in 1996, as most of the Jewish community of Constanța either died off or emigrated to Israel. It has been slowly decaying ever since and there is no money or much public interest to save it.
1996 can't be 20 years ago! It was at least few year's ago!!!! 😅

Where I live, commercial building codes are enforced, and minimum lighting is required even if a building is disused. So long as it is owned by someone, that someone must maintain fire suppression and minimum lighting systems until the day it's torn down.

Some of these are too grand to be allowed to deteriorate, surely they could have been repurposed.
And who is supposed to pay for that? Restoring an historical building easily costs tens of millions.
Load More Replies...Amazing. You can just feel the layers of history in these places waiting to be unpeeled.
It would be better if BP was doing a little more work on the posts and write the location of every building! Honestly it's not that difficult since the commenters can find it with one click! It would take a little more time and the post would be more complete and interesting! Uploading staff from reddit and other sites just like that is plain laziness!
Why were those beautiful buildings abandoned in the first place? Humans need to reclaimed their cities, towns, re-purpose , reuse old structure and stop urban sprawl - the desecrating' the nature!!!!
Sad. All these beautiful places left to rot. And NOTHING built today is anywhere this epic. We can only build bland and boring now. Well, no one will care when the current stuff is left to rot.
