Some whales (generally referred to as Baleen whales) feed by taking huge gulps of seawater. In the seawater are plankton and other marine organisms that make up their diet. Swallowing lots of seawater wouldn't be pleasent, so these whales have these baleen plates. They expand like a concertina when the whale gulps the seawater. The plates then contract, acting like a giant sieve. Water goes back to the ocean, food stays the oher side. Hope that explains it. :)
