The neat thing about our existence is that everyone gets to experience different lives. Sure, there could be a couple of similarities between a person or two - however, the way we talk, our thoughts, and the things we go through all would be entirely unlike someone else's.

Growing up in other cultures or simply in a different upbringing can help develop several skills that some people either can’t perform as well or never had the need to learn. Yet, we assume that we are all familiar with those everyday skills like vacuuming and cooking - however, this thread will convince you otherwise:

Someone on Reddit wondered about a similar thing and asked fellow users, “what is a basic skill that you grew up thinking everyone had until you saw others do it so horribly?“. The question received nearly 44K upvotes and 24K worth of both entertaining and sincere comments.

Do you have a skill that you thought was basic?

30 Basic Skills That Folks Thought Everyone Had Until They Saw Others Do It Horribly, As Shared Online I had a friend who grew up with maids. He was 18 and gay and his family kicked him out. So he got this tiny little run down studio apartment in Los Feliz. He was super proud of it, and invited me to see it. He was using candles to light it when I got there (maybe to save money? Maybe to hide the blemishes?) and had left an ashtray on the floor, which I accidentally kicked and got (cold) ashes all over his carpet.

He freaked the f**k out. “What do I do? How am I going to clean that?!”

“With a vacuum?” I replied, confused as to why this was a mystery.

He didn’t have one, so he went to ask the building manager if there was one he could borrow; which there was.

He pulls this standard upright vacuum into the middle of the room and then stares at it. After a few seconds wondering what he was doing I asked “do you not know how to use a vacuum?”

“No, you have to understand, we always had maids, I never even made a bed before last week.”

So I plug it in, turn it on, and take it a couple times back and forth across part of the carpet.

Then like a child with the Fisher-Price popper vacuum he went to work. He was over the moon excited. 25 years later it’s a favorite memory of that person.

30 Basic Skills That Folks Thought Everyone Had Until They Saw Others Do It Horribly, As Shared Online Writing---and I don't mean grammatically perfect pieces or novel writing. I am amazed how many people can't do basic level writing stuff like putting sentences in logical order, using basic punctuation and grammar, etc. I am not a world class writer, but years of Catholic school taught me the basics. I occasionally proofread papers for younger family members and honestly don't even know where to start. The grammar issues I can deal with, but the total lack of organization in paragraphs drives me crazy because I basically end up re-writing the damn paper so it makes some kind of sense.

This used to bother me way too much but I've calmed down. If the wrong one is used, everyone knows what the person meant. Since the purpose of language is to share ideas, they completed the task. I now think it only matters when the different homonyms can lead to total confusion (The priest was last seen on the altar with his hands on a choir boy preying/praying on the young child).

Here in Australia it is taught and built upon but by bit from year 1 to 6. But think about it - it’s taught for a week of two in that year, but how often do kids get to consolidate those skills and given the chance to read clocks? Like any new skill, it needs reinforcement for it to be retained. How often do kids see analogue clocks or their parents encourage their child to use them?

Analog clocks are one of the very few analog devices left that people have around to use. In the USA the Republicans have set up the school systems so that they don't have the resources to do anything other than force their students to cram for the standardized exams. Nothing outside of that has any meaning for schools any more. So if analog device reading isn't on the list, they will not be taught it. Aside from that, it's sad to me that so many parents rely so heavily on schools to teach their kids basic life skills. That is an entirely irresponsible attitude for parents to have. Also, notice how many kids seem to have no curiosity about the world or the ability to teach themselves anything. That's a real tragedy.

I will respectfully disagree with clocks being superfluous. Our kids, both under 12, learned how to read an analog clock in school. It's an important way to visualize and understand both fractions of a whole and to be able to understand time. The cursive I'll completely agree with!

We were taught in school. My mother went over it with me at home. No one noticed how much trouble I had when the hands were between numbers, I was lost. It is logical and pretty simple since everything is turning clockwise. BUT it literally took me years, into adulthood, to figure it out. If someone asked me the time (I wore a watch) I'd freeze. Some how I didn't get it and no one taught me what I needed to get it.

People with dyscalculia (which is basically the mathematics version of dyslexia) may have trouble reading analog clocks. I have very mild dyscalculia, and while I love watches and clocks (I just love that type of mechanics. I love automatons too), I sometimes have to look at an analog clock repeatedly to understand what time it actually is.

We actually noticed that our youngest couldn't at an age that their older sibling definitely could, and realised in between the birth of the first and the second the amount of stuff available online for younger kids, and the advent of tablets, meant they were so used to reading the time off the screen that they'd never had to grasp clock dials in a way their older sibling had just had to. So we made sure that they told us the time every single day on an analogue clock (we have several around) until they could. But it needed a focused intervention in a way it hadn't several years previously.

I CAN read an analog clock but it takes me a few moments to remember which is the minute and which is the hour hand. Also when assembling furniture.. My best mate put together a set of shelves using a drill as a driver on the short and easy to insert Allen keyed screws.. Stripped half of the heads and forced a few in at slightly off-angles and also stripped their threads a bit. Like what are you doing bro? Could have just used an Allen key by hand and put it together in the same time without damaging anything.

a number of people have mentioned using their drill/driver with the right torque setting (and an appropriate amount of skill.!). Yes I agree this is perfectly fine! I didn't mean to say you should never use a driver to assemble furniture, but more that you should know how to use your tools, use what is necessary, and do it with the right level of enthusiasm/strength

First day of work the foreman told the new hire to sweep the floor. "But I have a Ph.D.!" - "Oh, sorry, I did not realize. I will show you how to do it..."

A friend told me about an uncle who was late to EVERYTHING. No matter what happened, he was always late by at least an hour to any function. The family joke was that he would be late to his own funeral. Oddly enough, he was, because the hearse got lost on the way to the cemetery.

I'm not sure the picture goes along with the word basic. How many people actually know how to divide powers like that? Basic maths is arithmetic, percentages, fractions etc, not algebra.

30 Basic Skills That Folks Thought Everyone Had Until They Saw Others Do It Horribly, As Shared Online It's still pretty amazing watching how some people use their phones and computers. Like you could give some leeway in the 90s and earlier, computers back then were fairly complicated for a lot of functions. But after 30+ years of design refinements to make them about as easy to use as possible, plenty of people, including younger people, interact with them as if they're afraid it will get mad at them personally if they mess up.

Not sure what the "younger people's" excuse is, but when your initial experience is klaxons and warnings and being frozen out of the work you're doing because you got it wrong, you tend to be a bit more hesitant, no matter how much the technology has "improved". First impressions matter.

Actually, cooking eggs properly is quite difficult. Eggs vary in size, water temperature varies, you can't see inside the egg, etc etc. You can get good at it in your own kitchen, but go somewhere else and it will be different.

this is a hard one. if you don't live by the water or a affordable swimming pool to learn in, is very hard to learn...so this is one of those, is very good to know if you can.

Running a shovel. It’s harder than it looks apparently. My family runs a mobile home park. I’ve been digging for plumbing or fences or planting stuff or building stuff my whole life. Watching someone else shovel is painful.

Nobody has a contingency plan for EVERY situation. Sensible people make backup plans for things that they anticipate might fail - like failing to meet a friend in a crowd, dealing with unexpected bills, what to do if the car breaks down.
