The barista who smashed a customer’s windshield with a hammer for throwing his coffee at her has told her side of the story. Taking to social media, she revealed that she knew the man before the incident and defended herself against those who criticized her reaction.

Emma Lee, the owner and sole employee of the drive-through coffee stand Taste of Heaven Espresso in Southern Seattle, was involved in an altercation with a customer on June 11 after he became upset at the price of his drinks.

Highlights
  • On June 11, barista Emma Lee smashed a customer's windshield with a hammer after he threw his coffee at her.
  • The incident occurred after the customer became upset over the $22 price of his drinks.
  • Lee revealed she knew the man before the incident, but he had never been physically violent with her before.

Lee explained that the man had ordered a 32-ounce coffee and 24-ounce water for a total of $22. Other customers tried to calm him down for 10 minutes, but he remained agitated and continued to display violent behavior.

“Nobody is gonna miss you,” the man can be heard saying on the surveillance video footage of the incident, a comment that Lee understood to be a threat.

“Do you want me to throw this on you?” she asked him.

“Give it to me,” he responded before taking the two cups back. The customer then took the lid off the water bottle and threw the drink at the barista before doing the same with his coffee.

After the man got back inside his vehicle, Lee grabbed a hammer and smashed it into his windshield, leading the customer to drive off. He left the premises following Lee’s call to the police.

Lee revealed that she knew the “aggressive” customer before the incident, but he had never “gotten physically violent” with her

Speaking with Fox News, the business owner said she filed charges for misdemeanor assault. The customer has reportedly been banned from returning to the drive-through stand.

According to Lee, the man told her she couldn’t “name [her] own price” and felt he was being scammed.

“No one is forcing you to come here,” Lee told the outlet. “The argument that he didn’t know or was scammed doesn’t hold up. The prices are listed.”

“It was a threat; after screaming, spitting, and trying to pry open the window, I felt in danger,” she added before stating that she acted in self-defense.

“It’s OK for him to be outraged about the price of his drinks, enough to assault me, but it’s not appropriate for me to respond?”

In an Instagram post published on June 13, Lee shared further details about the incident and called for the man to be held accountable for his behavior.

“Due to the unforeseen amount of attention this video has received, I want to take a moment to address the real issue here: the safety of women, more specifically those that are disproportionately less protected,” the Seattle resident wrote.

“We work alone in this industry, wearing nearly nothing and interacting with men (most of which we don’t know) all day.” The barista greets her customers at Taste of Heaven Espresso in bikinis.

Lee stated that she acted in self-defense and that police banned the man from returning to the drive-through stand

She continued: “At what point during an assault does a woman have the right to protect herself? What is the appropriate response? I know this man. This wasn’t his first time being aggressive but it is the first time he’s ever gotten physically violent with me.

“The fact that the first thing people want to know is what I did to deserve him throwing two drinks at me is disgusting. We need to change the narrative of these conversations.

“This is no longer the time of women that will smile and apologize, having our only acceptable response be the art of de-escalation—this time, we will fight back.”

The cost of the order is irrelevant, he was a return customer and the prices are listed. He was also abusive in the past. She could be standing there naked and that does not invite unwanted attention. Stop blaming the victim. If a man can't control himself around a woman in such attire or lack thereof, then THEY need to GET HELP for their condition, society should not have to alter for them. This woman has a hammer because society allows men to misbehave, to deflect, to scorn and judge women.

I know I will be downvote into oblivion, but which animal exactly? I don't care about male vs female, I care about a thrown iced coffee which was a violent action with no damage caused vs a hammer which caused property damage and endangered BOTH people. He could very easily have grabbed her and d**g her out the window or the hammer could have gotten stuck and she'd be pulled out the window. HER violent response could have ended very badly for her. I'm not so hung up on the perceived threat "no one will miss you" because it is ambiguous - it could simply refer to her business being shut down for whatever reason.

The prices were not just for the coffee and water. The extra amount pays for being able to view a scantily clad woman making the coffee. It was a bikini barista place. I understand why she keeps a hammer with her for protection, but she exposed herself to more danger by leaning out of the window like that. He could have pulled her out when she stuck most of her upper half out of the window. I'm going to hazard a guess that the man wanted a 'little bit' more than just coffee and water for that price, being that he had been a regular customer, and when he didn't get it, he flipped his lid. As for her breaking his window, I think she might have went too far with that, but then I wasn't there. It did make him leave, though.

Even if they didn't have the prices on the menu, she would have probably read off the price at the window. But also the story says he got a 32oz coffee and a 24oz water. A 24oz is as big as a starbucks venti, but the water thrown on the video was as big as a small water cup, and the coffee looked like a grande at best. I agree that the price is absolute b******t, however he still should have known it as he ordered his drink. I think everyone is also missing the Fact that he exited his vehicle to try to assault her. Doesn't matter where it was hit or cold coffee or something else. She saw a man exit his vehicle in a drive thru and come at her. Period. Perfectly in her right to defend herself. And all those commenting on her looks and dress code... Judgy much? Just doing the old blame the victim she deserved it? And thats what wrong with this country. By the way wanna talk about how he looks?

We like an explanation of the phrase " I knew him before." And why she just happen to have a HAMMER to throw? And (BJJ speaking here) why she thought the vapid-faced 'Porn Queen' pix would help her case? Something is NOT adding up in this narrative!

She said she knew him from before which suggests he has frequented the establishment prior to the incident. Surely he must have known the prices, but that was a ridiculous amount for a coffee and a cup of water. Maybe it was the latter than was the problem. He probably wasn't expecting the same price for a water as a coffee. It goes without saying that he shouldn't have thrown the drinks at her, but let's not forget she threatened to do that to him first. Why did she have a hammer to hand? She says it's no longer time for women to smile and take it. (Why just women? And I am one) But it sort of does go with costumer service. I'm not saying anyone should put up with abuse, but threatening to throw drinks at customers isn't really the best way to go about resolving anything. I can do without the numerous pouting poses too. "I am so upset about this that I want to show you my tatts and piercings".

What? She already thought of him as a difficult customer but after putting her prices up so that she was charging $22 for a coffee and a water she then served him again? He should not have thrown the drinks at her. He shouldn’t have been given them in the first place if she had an issue with him already and he hadn’t already paid for them. Instead of arguing with him for long enough for other customers to get involved she should have phoned the police straight away. He is a d**k. But she is no better. To state that this is an industry where women are working alone wearing next to nothing is only a description of her own business model. I spent a few years working as a barista. I was fully clothed and there were 4+ of us there constantly. I have never seen a single bikini barista in my life.

I'd never see one until I moved to Washington. They're still weird and unsettling to me. I will never understand why sexualizing something like coffee is done here. I'm not exactly a prude but they kind of gross me out. Something about the weird little often pink booths gives me the ick.

She chose to run her place as an overpiced stand where she wears a bikini to serve coffee (why is that even a thing?) and is then shocked when it attracts unpleasant men? What sort of men did she think that was going to attract exactly?

She was scared so instead of shutting the window and walking away to call the police, she opened up the window giving him the opportunity to throw the drinks. Then conveniently as she was shaking from fear, she was able to go grab a hammer and strike his car. Man, sounds terrifying. I am a woman and that man was wrong. However, he did not try to kill her or hurt her with a deadly weapon. So using a weapon in retaliation doesn’t really fit the response. It’s also clear based on this girls tattoos that she does not have good judgment. I’m going to guess she has interacted with this man on a personal level before and not just at work.

I'm not sure who was right or wrong. "a 32-ounce coffee and 24-ounce water for a total of $22" is an outrageous price. I get that she was scared he was going to hurt her. I get that he was a regular customer and therefore should have known what the price was going to be before ordering. However, I still don't understand why he would have gone ballistic unless this was a sudden increase in price that he wasn't "warned" about prior to ordering. She shouldn't have smashed his windshield. I think she shouldn't be in the coffee business and he needs to make his own coffee at home.

So it's ok to throw his drinks at her because this idiot can't read the prices that were clearly labeled and he ordered and paid anyways??? She has no control over the prices and he's taking it out on her.

Nobody is saying she deserved it because of the way she dresses or looks. The only comments about her appearance are because she's sneaked her pouty tatt & piercing photos into the article.

Seeing how he’s dressed, I’m not surprised he’s an a*****e.

You would have been within your rights to crack him on the jaw with that hammer

What does it matter what age looked like ? Are you implying based on her looks she deserves to be abused at her workplace.? Your just as bad as him.

"...wearing nearly nothing and interacting with men (most of which we don’t know) all day." It was your choice to work there, knowing the risk of being harassed and all. It's so sad that F&B industry requires workers to dress scantily to sell their products

The internalised misogyny is strong with this one. "Yeah she looks like a sl*t so she deserves what she gets"
