This Barbershop Will Return Money To Kids On One Condition – If They Read Out Loud
This barbershop in Ypsilanti, Michigan doesn’t just cut hair. It also cuts prices for kids who read aloud to the barber while getting their hair cut!
Barber Ryan Griffin was inspired by a similar idea in Harlem, and so far the initiative is proving to be popular for both kids and parents. “The response from parents and teachers has been great, they love it!” Ryan Griffin and the owner Alex Fuller told Bored Panda. The idea isn’t just designed to encourage literacy however. Because the barbershop caters to diverse communities, the books available in The Fuller Cut library all feature positive images of African-Americans in order to inspire the young customers sitting in the barber’s chair. “The response from parents and teachers has been great, they love it!’ The owner Alex Fuller and the barber/idea bringer Ryan Griffin told Bored Panda
“For some kids, reading comes easy. For others, they may be afraid to read out loud, or they may struggle with reading in general”
“We encourage all of them to try regardless”
“Every time there is a book in a child’s hand empowerment for a community happens,” said Alex
“There have been moments where we can see on a child’s face that they feel accomplished when they’re done reading. Nothing beats that”
Ryan explained the driving heart behind the incentive in a Frederick Douglass quote: “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men”

What a wonderful gift this barber is giving to children and the community. In the end, educating and encouraging children is a gift to the world. Awesome! <3
And then the kids can correct the sign to 'promoting' and 'receive' #irony- but is a good idea :)
What do you mean by this? Of course Afro-Americans are scared of pinky whites. After so many centuries of maltreatments, slavery, being shot down by white, pink police, having low paid jobs, bad housing, poor medical care, not being respected as 1st class citizens, what do expect? By the way I'm European. So no need to make a stupid comment about the above. OK. Afro-Americans never ask that their forefathers to shipped out to become slaves to the Europeans in the States way back when. So now they might be sometimes racist, well "the shoe has changed foot". Translated from a French saying.
Sir Ryan Griffin, you are a very GREAT MAN. God bless you. Thank you for the wonderful work. You are so much better than all the politiciens out there. Truely a man with a huge heart and soul. Chapeau bas Monsieur. Bravo! You have brought the tears to my eyes and a smile at the same time. Thank you ever so much.
That's a wonderful idea! Definitely one of those things that kids might not appreciate fully NOW but will likely influence them later on. P.S. I was very suddenly distracted by how one of the books was called "Chocolate Me". I don't really have anything to say about it, I just thought it was funny for some reason.
anything that will get them to sit still. by all means necessary!
It is, and it seems to be more of an issue even in the Western World than people will acknowledge.
