Decorating your home can be a fun experience. You can enhance its strengths, hide its weaknesses, and make it a reflection of yourself. Or you can put the toilet in the kitchen, transform the pool into a flower pot and call it a day. It's your choice. Just don't be surprised if photos of your chateau end up on the internet and people laugh their heads off.

The subreddit "Housing Manure" (sorry for butchering the name but I have to paraphrase) is a place where Redditors have been gathering to do just that. Sharing the worst design, construction, and living conditions, they've successfully proven time and time again that, for better or worse, human creativity knows no limits.

Similar to fashion, interior trends come and go, but true style is forever. Ideas often move in cycles, often reactionarily to external influences like social change and technology. To know which trends are currently in, I contacted interior architect and lecturer of interior design at Vilnius College of Design, Judita Striukienė.

"I think nowadays eclectic solutions are on the rise; it's really popular to combine different interior design styles," Striukienė told Bored Panda. "In fact, it's quite rare to discover a place that is true to just one school. When you say a home was designed according to a certain style, you usually mean that some elements have an advantage in that place over the others or there is some sort of leitmotif throughout the entire space."

"These elements are often dictated by the urban surroundings or the owner's wants and desires, including their hobbies, favorite furniture, the art that they own, and so on."

Some aspects of interior design, however, are more universal than others. "First and foremost, spaces have to be functional. Everything else is more or less decor, creating a certain mood," Judita Striukienė said. "Only after a designer makes the apartment or house serve the owner's lifestyle and everyday life can they start working on other things like eliminating the flaws of that particular place."

After these crucial steps, interior designers usually move to more subjective matters.

As you can see from the pictures, there are plenty of ways to mess up the look of your home. But Judita Striukienė said it's not just the visual aesthetic that's at stake.

"Firstly, we have to mention technical mistakes—unnecessary interventions into the structure of the building. People make them due to a lack of knowledge and/or overestimating their abilities. Because of that, some real estate developers are now providing buyers with detailed lists of what they can and cannot touch."

Maybe adjust the amount of purple in the cabinets to just the grove in the doors. There is too much purple this way. This coming from someone that loves purple. The dark shade combined with the amount of it used also makes the kitchen look smaller.

I love this. What is not to love? Why do most folks strive for mediocre, for neutral, for boring?Purple has been my favorite color since I was a little girl.My hair has been purple almost all of my adult life and some of my teenage years. I truly do not understand people. I think most people look boring and have no sense of adventure or style. Are there no artists anymore? Why would anyone not adore this? I am starting to think I don't belong in this dull and dreary world most people seem to want. PS did you know there is a store called The Purple Store? t IS possible to find purple furnishings but i prefer to find things by happenstance, they tend to be more affordable that way.....

The marble floor is swimmingly. For those who bathe a lot, strolling into kitchen afterwards keeps your mind smooth & at peace [water does that; why people live on shores]. Kaleidoscopic...Are the top cabinets magenta & bottom ones purple & the one(s) on the left lavender? The side of cabinet [next to window] is a different shade. [A riot of colors or the fotog's lighting?] Too much Technicolor motif for my apt kitchenette but I'd like to visit [often] the creative, cultivated, clever, imaginative person w/a curiosity & originality in her/his spirit. I'm guessing "her."

I love purple, but if I was designing something for a flip, I'm going to choose neutral tones that will compliment other people's tastes. Pops of color should be saved for staging, maybe a front door if there's no HOA. And were these new wood, or wood appearing, cabinets that she painted? Aside from the ridiculous amount of work, could they even be stripped? I rent a condo that someone did a horrid job of painting and adding "trim" to cheap particle board cabinets- they stripped the laminate from the front of the doors.. Terrible execution. Better to save bold, creative, diy ideas for your own space, not one for others

Everyone should paint their home in a way that makes them happy But.. I hate flippers. The whole point is to make a profit by increasing the perceived value by spending as little as possible on the work, and it usually shows. It might not be obvious in photos (though you can still usually see it there too), but living in it will reveal what corners were cut. But shite like this... I can only assume this house flipper is a crazy person.

I hate everything about this kitchen except the placement of the appliances. Marble is pourous and dissolvable. It stains and is impossible to sterilize, plus you're supposed to use special cleaning products just so you don't damage it. Stone counter tops also usually have patterns that make it really difficult to see crumbs or grime that need to be cleaned. Contrast this all with an unusual color choice, and it's not going to appeal to most people. Real estate usually comes in neutral tones to give people a basic idea of the space without implying individual taste, allowing them to visualize it however they want. It's also usually not painted in dark colors that are going to be difficult to cover without a base primer and multiple coats.

Then there are the financial mistakes. "How often people miscalculate can vary from culture to culture, but a huge investment into a property (one that will not pay off when selling it) can hurt quite a lot. For example, you can spend a small fortune on altering the floor plan but it might not add any value or, even worse, future buyers might find the changes irrational."

Judita said other common mistakes occur in the kitchen and bathroom; places where you really need to know the materials. The good thing here is that the answers are usually clear-cut and known to most industry experts.

But something tells me even they couldn't have saved some of these homes from their owners.
