If you don’t live near the sea or just can’t travel this summer because of COVID-19 restrictions, there’s one more way to get your beach vacation — bring it to your own backyard.

A Spanish company called Piscinas de Arena NaturSand is offering just that. Well, kinda. Piscinas de Arena NaturSand specializes in “sand pools” — custom pools that are as close to real beaches as it gets. And if people already have a pool of their own, the company can simply convert it into something straight out of a Mediterranean paradise.

Piscinas de Arena NaturSand says that it can “provide an environment similar to that of a piece of natural beach” and judging by their product photos, that’s not an exaggeration.

“Our patented sand finish for pools is grainy but solid,” a Piscinas de Arena NaturSand spokesperson told Bored Panda. “It is not made out of loose sand, it’s completely attached to the concrete surface of the pools’ structure with binding agents.”

However, it does not make the maintenance of these pools more difficult than that of regular tile pools.

Piscinas de Arena NaturSand makes its sand pools with a special concrete mix that’s covered with compacted sand

Not only does the surface of these pools never get hot, it’s anti-slip dry and wet

People can also get a customized design to suit their land. In some cases, if the weather permits, such pools can be built in only 30 days

The company is currently operating only in Spain and Portugal, but it has provided construction or renovation of pools all over the world

Its portfolio consists of more than 800 projects in over 14 different countries including the US, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Colombia, and Brazil

The entrance of the sand pools begins with level zero on a soft ramp, as if it were a real beach. This way, there’s no need for stairs or ladders

The pools come in various shapes and forms and can have multiple levels of depth

A typical 30 by 16 feet sand pool (including both water surface and ‘sand’ areas) will cost around $27,000

I agree. And also: I don't know why they're called Sand Pools if they actually aren't. Compacted sand on top of cement isn't the same as Sand. It just looks like it (but feels hard and rough instead).

I don't understand all of the bitterness towards expensive things. You can appreciate architecture without owning the damn building! You don't have to love the owners or how they got their money or how much tax they paid last year - this is just about the design of a pool that's less cookie-cutter and more nature-inspired. I think it's absolutely lovely, all practicalities aside! As someone else mentioned, the thought of walking on and rubbing against literal sandpaper is a little jarring.

Even most hotels in Turkey dont have these kinds of pure / clean pools, most of them have a texture like old kitchen counter tiles. And it feels weird to know that some people's backyard look like this... I may not even afford to stay at a hotel that has a pool like that, I'll just crawl and die. Thanks bored panda.

These pools are suppose to be built better, stronger, cheaper, easier, faster to put in but in the US the contractors are still being abusive with prices! 27k, here they start at 65k not for the middle working class.

No, it's not piles of sand. It's concrete mixed with sand. So, you have a surface that is hard, and textured as if it were covered in sandpaper. There are no piles of movable sand, it's just an illusion.

You mean sanding pool :D Looks cute, but not sure if I'd like to scratch my skin into it :) Maybe a good exfoliation is ok now and then :D

No, horrible idea. I love my beach but don't like bringing it home. Bad idea.

There is always room for innovation and this reinvents the game. It's intriguing that some of the largest creations are the weakest. I like the pools that look like beach gradually sinking into the water.

That video is amazing, from the fades to Coldplay. Is that like free for everyone to use commercially? I feel Coldplay would do that, it feels like the staple song for "so you want to make video more professional" starterpack.

Would be so nice to have one of these! And a backyard where I can build it. And a house that has a backyard. Oh, and the money, too.

Mmm, imagine a 40 grit sandpaper finish under your feet and against your skin when ever you touch the sides or bottom of the pool. No thanks.

When your feet have been in the water for over an hour, the texture of the pool floor will scour the skin off your soles.

Advertising, but this is new to me and I love how it looks. I wonder how it's cleaned, though. You can't scrub such a mat surface very well.

In NZ they would have to be fenced to stop children drowning in them- I think some of the ascetics would be lost, but unfenced pools make me anxious!

Honestly, most of them didn't even remind me of the beach. They just look like sand-colored swimming pools.

That's a lot of square footage lost that could have been actual pool.

Ewwwww the LAST thing you want is that much sand in your back yard. Bugs, cat poop, God knows what else. No thanks

No, it's not piles of sand. It's concrete mixed with sand. So, you have a surface that is hard, and textured as if it were covered in sandpaper. There are no piles of movable sand, it's just an illusion.
