Around 2,000 elephants are living in the wild in Thailand, and one of them made headlines this week. A baby elephant was captured on camera in Chiang Mai, north Thailand, committing the cheekiest “crime” ever—the playful elephant was apparently feasting on some sugarcanes in a farmer’s field when approached by local people. In order not to get caught, the adorable baby animal hid behind a narrow post, making the local farmers and thousands of people online crack up with laughter.

This baby elephant went viral for trying to hide behind a narrow pole after locals caught it eating sugarcane

The baby elephant apparently stumbled on some sugarcane and decided to have a small, sugary feast. However, it probably didn’t expect people to find it, so when they did, the cheeky baby hid behind a narrow pole, believing no one could see the adorable trespasser. When the local people shone a light on the elephant and its conspicuous hiding spot, it remained standing perfectly still in hopes that it wouldn’t be spotted.

The hilarious photo was originally shared on Facebook on November 16. The caption, translated from Thai, read: “Keep calm. Officers will see. Let’s continue eating sugarcane.”

Without a doubt, the photo cracked hundreds of people up. Almost 3k people liked the post, and more than 1k shared it on their feeds. The adorable pic quickly spread to other social media platforms, including Twitter, Imgur, and Reddit.

Apparently, elephants absolutely love sugarcane and will go great lengths to get it

I saw a man and his dog playing hide and seek. The man would "hide" behind a tree, just like the elephant did, and the dog would pretend he couldn't see him. It wandered around, looking lost. The owner jumped out from behind the tree and the dog raced over for a big hug. Then turned around, looking a bit lost, while the owner went behind the tree again. Over and over they played, neither lost their enthusiasm.

Couldn’t agree more! Elephants and orangutans both utterly slay me. When I’m overwhelmed by depression, I will spend hours watching videos of these AMAZING creatures. The Smithsonian channel has lots of great orangutan vids.

It would be a better world if there were fewer humans and more elephants.

They have hilarious personalities. Between this and the other one throwing a tantrum, they appear to have the same go to responses as a toddler. I love it!
